COMPONENTS OF
FISH
Head – It refers to the head of the fish, where eyes, mouth
located. Eyes - Fish eyes are rounder than in mammals because
of the refractive index of water and focus is achieved by moving
the lens in and out, not distorting it as in mammals. Mouth - The
mouth’s shape is a good clue to what fish eat. The larger it is, the
bigger the prey it can consume.
Body – Fish have a variety of different body plans
. At the broadest level their body is divided into
head, trunk, and tail, although the divisions are not
always externally visible.
Tail - The tail or caudal fin is the only fin
attached directly to the spinal cord of fish. Fish
generally, move using a wave like motion of their
body, the caudal tail amplifies the effect of this
and is the main source of propulsion for many
fish.
Gills - Fish breathe through gills instead of lungs.
Just like all other animals, fish need oxygen to
survive. Because they live in water, they have
evolved gills which enable them to remove
dissolved oxygen from water. Most fish have four
gills on both sides of their head.
Dorsal fin
- an unpaired fin on the back of a fish or whale, e.g.
the tall triangular fin of a shark or killer whale.
Pectoral fin
- each of a pair of fins situated on either side just
behind a fish's head, helping to control the direction
of movement during locomotion. They correspond
to the
forelimbs of other vertebrates
Scales
- each of the small, thin horny or bony plates
protecting the skin of fish and reptiles, typically
overlapping one another.

important?
2. How do fish breath underwater?
