production of raw lac, with an annual production of over


20,000 tons.

 About 80 per cent of the world’s total production is in India.

 75 per cent of it is exported to over a hundred countries,

Two methods of lac
cultivation
 Traditional method

 It is traditional method of cutting the Lac, in which


Lac is produced by cutting the whole plant
 there is no precautions about Lac insect.
 The result in loss of Lac insect, and huge loss of crop
in future. This method is mainly used in tribal areas.
Artificial Method:
 It is a scientific method of Lac production which is given by Indian Lac
Research Institute, Ranchi, Jharkhand.

 In this method plants are divided into 3 to parts and the Lac is produced
from them one by one.

 It is known as Coupe system.

1. Selection of suitable host plants,


2. Inoculation of brood lac,
3. Removal of brood lac sticks,
4. Natural enemies of lac insect,
5. Harvesting of lac sticks and
6. Scraping of raw lac from twigs.
