Why Is Water Important?

Water is essential to all life. All living plants

and animals need water to survive.

Each day, try to drink around five glasses of

water to keep your body healthy.

We also need water to clean our bodies, teeth,

clothes, plates and cups.

Plants need water to grow. Without plants,

humans and other animals would not have
anything to eat.
What Is World Water Day?
World Water Day is a special day that happens every year on March 22 nd. It was
started by a group of countries that work together to improve our world - the
United Nations, or UN for short.

March 22nd 2024

This year’s
theme is ‘Water
for Peace’

In 2010, the UN recognized, “the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation
as a human right that is essential for the full enjoyment of life and all human rights.” No
one should be left behind or left without access to safe water.
Where Do We Get Water From?

Most people in Chile are very lucky in that we can get

water from a tap whenever we want it. The water we
have is both fresh and clean. However, it is important to
know that not everyone in the world has access to
fresh, clean water.

In some countries, people don’t have taps in their

houses. They have to walk for many miles to fill up
buckets from a river, or from a well or water pump that
gives groundwater..
ATENTION

Do you ever complain when it rains a lot?

Countries in temperate climates have lots of rain.
Sometimes people can get fed up of it!

But for other countries that are close to the equator, there
may be months where it doesn’t rain at all. When there is
no rain, plants cannot grow properly and then there isn’t
enough food or water for humans or other animals.

1.9 billion people live

in areas where there
are regular droughts.
