AIM AND OBJECTIVES

To determine the variation in strength of

concrete with variation in size of coarse
aggregate and water content.
INTRODUCTION
Concrete is a composite material composed
of cement,aggregate and water .
Compressive strength of concrete is most
common performance attribute used in
designing structures and is measured by
breaking cylindrical or cubical concrete
specimen in a Compression Testing
Machine.
NEED FOR COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH
TEST

 To determine the role of water in concrete

strength.

 To determine the water absorption by

concrete.

 To determine the role of coarse aggregate in

concrete strength.
COMPRESSION TESTING MACHINE
 It is used to determine the compressive
strength of concrete. It operates on the
principle of Hydraulic transmission of load
from test specimen to the indicator. It is used
during lab experiments and field
experiments.
MATERIAL REQUIRED
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED
COMPRESSION TEST STEPS FOR
CONCRETE
1. Preparation of concrete batch for different
grades.
2. Casting of concrete in cube mould.
3. Placing the moulds in water for 3,7,14 and
28 days respectively.
4. Testing each concrete mould of different
grades in CTM.
5. Noting of results of each cube test.

*CTM-compression testing machine.

ROLE OF AGGREGATE IN CONCRETE
STRENGTH
 The aggregate with smaller size gives high
strength.
 crushed stone produces higher strength than

rounded aggregates.
ABSORPTION OF WATER BY
CONCRETE
 Excess of water decreases the strength of
concrete.
 Good quality concrete has low permeability.
 Concrete mixers with larger aggregate

requires less water.

CONCRETE STRENGTH vs CEMENT
STRENGTH
 Cement grade is expressed as OPC(33,43,53)
and Concrete grade as ,M10,M15,M20.
 Concrete strength depends on cement

strength.
 Cement strength is tested on 7,28 and 90

days.
BENEFITS
The data produced in a compression test can
be used in many ways s/a:
1. To determine batch quality.
2. To reduce material costs and achieve lean
manufacturing goals.
3. Gives idea about proper quantity of water
for required strength.
4. Determines strength of each size of
aggregate.
