INTRODUCTION
• Efficient communication through signage and road markings is
essential for safe traffic flow.
• This evaluation aims to comprehensively assess existing sign
boards and road markings.
• Factors like visibility, legibility, and compliance with standards
will be systematically analyzed.
• Identifying strengths and weaknesses in current systems is a key
objective.
• Valuable insights will be provided for improving road safety and
efficiency.
• Recommendations for enhancement will include adjustments to
placement, design, or materials.

LITERATURE REVIEW
1. Evaluation of road traffic signs, markings and traffic rules compliance among drivers in Ghana –
Akple, et al. (2020)

• Study assesses drivers' familiarity and comprehension of traffic signs and markings in Ghana
• Data collected from 1,205 drivers in major cities via surveys, interviews, and observations
• Findings reveal negative correlation between familiarity and compliance, while comprehension
positively influences adherence to traffic rules
• Recommendations include enhancing education and training on traffic signs, potentially
integrating tests into relicensing processes
• Emphasis on clear signage and ongoing education to promote road safety and compliance

2. Application of road signs and road markings to increase safety in horizontal curves on rural roads-
Kučina, et al. (2023)
• Road signs and markings influence driver behavior. They significantly reduce speeds on horizontal
curves, a critical factor in mitigating accidents.
• Effectiveness of road markings varies. Different designs have different impacts on speed reduction,
suggesting the need for careful selection and placement.
• Placement of curve warning signs is crucial. Signs positioned at specific distances prompt earlier
deceleration by drivers, enhancing safety on curves.
• Road signs and markings play vital roles in providing visual cues, improving traffic flow, increasing
driver awareness, and supporting navigation, thus enhancing overall road safety.
• Understanding the impact of signage and markings can lead to targeted interventions for managing
speeds, optimizing traffic flow, and making strategic infrastructure investments.

3. Retro-reflectivity and night visibility of road traffic signs – Su, Wenying, and Dan L (2010)

• Emphasizes the importance of road traffic signs being visible at night for traffic safety.
• Explains how retro-reflective materials on signs enhance nighttime visibility by reflecting light
back to its source.
• Discusses different aspects of retro-reflective materials like grades, categories, structures,
photometric, and colorimetric characteristics.
• Highlights the complexity of the relationship between night visibility and retro-reflectivity,
suggesting a need for further research.
• Advocates for standardizing the use of traffic signs and retro-reflective materials to improve
night visibility and ensure traffic safety.

4. Assessing the color status and daylight chromaticity of road signs through machine learning
approaches - Saleh, Roxan, et al. (2023)
• The study highlights the importance of road sign color for safety and communication.
• It discusses using machine learning to assess color and chromaticity, showing a link between sign
age and color degradation.
• Machine learning models accurately predicted sign status and chromaticity, offering insights for
improving road safety and maintenance.

RESEARCH GAP
• Detailed analysis of specific types of traffic signs and markings, aimed at understanding drivers'
familiarity and comprehension levels more comprehensively, was not conducted.
• Comparative studies between different regions or cities within an area was not done which could
help identify variations in drivers' familiarity and comprehension of traffic signs based on
location-specific factors such as urban infrastructure, traffic density, or road design.
• Limited focus is given on the long-term effectiveness of road signs and markings in different
weather conditions and at night. So explore how road signs and markings perform in adverse
weather conditions such as rain, fog, and snow. Also investigate the visibility and effectiveness
of road signs and markings during nighttime driving.
• Complementing quantitative data with qualitative research methods such as focus group
discussions or in-depth interviews can offer a deeper understanding of the factors influencing
drivers' familiarity and comprehension of traffic signs. Qualitative insights can uncover
underlying reasons for misconceptions or challenges in interpreting specific signs.

7
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
• The evaluation will focus on assessing sign boards and road markings along a
selected stretch of road.
• Various types of signage, including regulatory, warning, and informational signs,
will be included in the analysis.
• Both daytime and nighttime conditions will be considered to evaluate visibility and
legibility under different lighting conditions.
• The study will encompass an examination of signage and markings at intersections,
pedestrian crossings, and other critical points on the road.
• Feedback from road users, including drivers and pedestrians, may be incorporated to
provide additional insights into the effectiveness of communication.

8
OBJECTIVES
• Assess the visibility and legibility of sign boards and road markings, considering factors such as
font size, contrast, and placement to ensure easy readability under various lighting and
environmental conditions.
• Evaluate the compliance of sign boards and road markings with established standards and
guidelines, ensuring adherence to prescribed specifications regarding size, color, symbols, and
placement.
• Measure the effectiveness of sign boards and road markings in conveying essential information
to road users, examining the clarity and comprehensibility of conveyed messages to enhance
road safety and efficiency.
• Identify opportunities for improvement in existing signage and marking systems, recommending
adjustments to placement, design, materials, or content based on evaluation findings to optimize
communication on roadways.
