• What is Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)?
● Antyodaya Anna Yojana is the sponsored scheme of Government of
India to provide highly subsidized food to millions of the poorest
families.

• Year of Implementation and Area of


Implementation :-
● It was launched in December, 2000 for one crore poorest of the
poor families in both urban and rural areas. It was first
implemented in the state of Rajasthan.
• Main Objective of Antyodaya Anna Yojana
(AAY)
● The main objective of the scheme is to ensure food security and to
create hunger-free India. AAY scheme covers the poorest of the
poor in India by supply of food and other important commodities
for their daily needs on subsidized rates.

• Rate of Success/Failure :-
● The AAY Scheme was expanded in 2003-04 by adding another 50
lakh Below Poverty Line households with no assured means of
subsistence or societal support. With this increase, 1.5 crore (i.e.
23% of Below Poverty Line) families were covered under this
yojna. AAY was again expanded in 2005-06 to cover another 50
lakh Below Poverty Line households thus increasing its coverage
to 2.5 crore (i.e. 38% of Below Poverty Line) households.
