Web server and e-Business

Communication Tools
Definition
• Server
– It is any computer used to provide files or make
programs available to other computers connected
to it through a network (such as LAN or WAN)
Introduction
• Client/Server architectures
– They are used in LANs, WANs, and the Web.
– Client computers request services (printing, information
retrieval, and database access) from server.
– The server processes the clients’ requests.
– The computers that perform the server functions usually
have more memory and larger, faster disk drives.
– Web browser software is the software that makes
computers work as Web clients.
Dynamic Content Generation
• Dynamic page is a Web page whose content is
shaped by a program in response to user
requests.
• Static page is an unchanging page retrieved
from a file on a Web server.
Web Client/Server Architectures
• When a person uses a Web browser to visit a Web site.
• The Web browser (known as a Web client) requests files
form the Web server at the company that operates the
Web site.
• Using the Internet as the transportation medium, the
request is formatted by browser using HTTP and sent to
the server computer.
• When the server receives the request, it retrieves the
file containing the Web page that the client requested,
formats it using HTTP, and sends it back to the client
over the Internet.
Three-tier client/server network
• Although the two-tier client/server
architecture works well for the delivery of
Web pages, a Web site that delivers dynamic
content and processes transactions must do
more than respond to requests for Web pages.
• Three-tier architecture extends the two-tier
architecture to allow additional processing to
occur before the Web server responds to the
Web client’s request.
Electronic Mail (E-MAIL)
• E-Mail Benefits
– E-mail conveys messages from one destination to
another in a few seconds.
– Messages can contain simple text or character
formatting similar to word-processing programs.
– Attachments such as invoice, wholesale catalog.
E-Mail Drawbacks
• One annoyance associated with e-mail is the
amount of time that businesspeople spend
reading/answering their e-mail.
• A second major irritation brought by e-mail is
the computer virus. It is a program that
attaches in email and cause damage when the
virus program is activated.
E-mail
• A number of companies offer software that
can run on their e-mail server to limit the
amount of spam that gets through to their
employees. These software are used for
filtering spam e-mails and preventing
employee’s computers from virus damage.
