DESIGN ASPECTS OF COLUMN BASES

PRESENTED BY
TECE 18 MR. YASHODIP B. JANE
TECE 26 MS. AAKANKSHA S. KUMAVAT
TECE 42 MS. RENUKA D. BACHHAV

GUIDED BY
Mr. D.S. Desale
Introduction :-

• The Columns are supported on the column bases.

• The column base is provided for transferring the load from the column to
the base and distribute it evenly on the concrete bed.
• The load is also distributed over a larger area, so that the stress induced in
the concrete is within its permissible limits and is capable of resisting
overturning.
• If column base is not provided, the column is likely to punch through the
concrete block.
• Mild steel plates of sufficient area are attached to the bottom of the
column in order to increase the bearing area.
• Such plates are column bases. These plates are secured to the concrete
block through holding down bolts.

Problem Statement :-
If column is provided over the concrete pedestal directly, it gets
penetrate into the concrete pedestal so their is chances of failure like
overturning, collapse, etc. So, we must provide base plate in between
column and concrete pedestal.
Aim
To study the design aspect of various column bases by using Limit

State Method as per IS 800-2007.

Objective
• To understand the behavior of column base under axial load, Axial
Load+ Uniaxial Moment & Axial Load+ Biaxial Moment.
• To understand the arrangement of various components of Column
Bases using bolted & welded connections.
• To demonstrate structural arrangement of Column Bases using
mini model.

• Design of Base Plate

• Design of Connection (Welded or Bolted)

• Design of Concrete Block (Pedestal)

Methodology :-
• The first methodology considers uniform pressure distribution
between the base plate and the concrete surface.
• A computational program has been developed to design steel
column bases considering both methodologies mentioned. The
program has been validated with manually solved design
examples and conclusions about the pressure distribution design
procedures were made from the 200 bases designed by the
programme. It was noted that, for the triangular pressure
distribution, there is an interval in which the procedure is not
completely applicable. Apart from this interval, there was no
significant difference in this results.

TYPES OF COLUMN BASES

1. SLAB BASE

2. GUSSETED BASE

3. MOMENT RESISTING BASE

SLAB BASE:-
• Slab base is designed for smaller axial
loads
• It consists of a base plate (placed
underneath a machined column end)
and cleat angle.
• The column end transfers the load to
the slab base by direct bearing.
• The column end is connected to base
plate by welding or by means of bolted
angle iron cleats.
• That means no gussest plates are
required for connecting the slab base.

Fig. Slab Base
GUSSETED BASE:-
• For columns carrying heavy
loads, gusseted bases are used.
• The load is transferred to the base
partly through the gusset plates
attached to the flanges of the
column by means of angle iron
cleats(also called gusset angles).
• The thickness of base plate in this
case will be less than the
thickness of the slab base for
same axial load.
• The base plate is anchored at the
four corners to the foundation
with bolts to check the lateral Fig. Gusseted Base
movement.
Fig. Gusseted Base
MOMENT RESISTING BASE:-
• Moment Resisting bases can be provided if large lateral forces and
bending moments are anticipated.
• These bases are expected to transfer bending moment and axial forces
between the steel members and the concrete substructure.
• The design methodology for a moment-resisting base plate
connection involves using an iterative experience to select the base
dimensions and bolt configuration. This arrangement is then
evaluated for its resistance against the anticipated actions from the
superstructure.
CONCLUSION:-
• The slab base is designed for smaller axial loads.
• The gusseted base is designed for Higher axial loads.
• The moment-resisting base is designed for column with axial
load & bending moment.
