CHINESE

PEKING OPERA
• is a form of traditional Chinese theater which
combines music, vocal performance, mime,
dance and acrobatics. It arose in the late 18th
century and became fully developed and
recognized by the mid-19th century.
MUSIC IN PEKING OPERA

• Arias-example of a solo music or song used


by one of the characters
• Vocals- The musical speech is where the
actors are speaking through music, delivery of
line is rigidly controlled by conventions.

• Each role has its prescribed vocal timbre and pitch and
syllables are often drawn out in regard for conversational usage
in order to maintain the appropriate rhythm.
• Spoken passages are governed by strict rhythms and tempos.

INDONESIAN THEATER
WAYANG KULIT
• traditional form of puppet-shadow play in Indonesia.
• The puppets are crafted from buffalo hide and mounted on
bamboo sticks.
• Wayang kulit was performed in royal court and widely
performed in public on religious occasions. The stories
were based on the two epic of India, the Mahabharata and
Ramayana.
• This shadow play is an extremely important vehicle of
culture, serving as a carrier of myth, morality play and
form of religious experience rolled into one.
VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL FEATURES

• Dalang - the puppeteer sings the mood songs


(Suluk) at regular intervals during performance;
interprets characters and dialogue using a variety
of voices. He is characterized by being creative,
humorous, flexible and he gives signals to the
orchestra.
