Black Canyon of The

Gunnison
National Park in Montrose County, Colorado
Information:

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a


National Park located in Western Colorado,
United States. It was established in 1999,
and is known for being among the steepest
canyons in North America, as some of the
sections reach depths of over 2000 feet. This
canyon was carved by the Gunnison River
over millions of years worth of time.
Geological Formation:

● The canyon was formed by the action of the Gunnison River.


● The canyon exposes some of the oldest rock formations in North America, even including
items of Precambrian-aged rocks.
● The canyon prevails a dark colored volcanic and metamorphic rock structure.
● Includes a slight amount of sedimentary rock from cementation from the Gunnison River.
● To this day, the river continues to shape and create deep incisions within the canyon.
● Large crystals and fossils can be found within the rock structures.
Outdoor Activities:

● The canyon is known for its great hiking trails ranging from easy walks to strenuous
routes.
● Rock climbing activities for climbers off all skill.
● One can fish inside of the Gunnison River filled with many fish species.
● Wildlife viewing, including deer, eagles, and bighorn sheep.
Scenic Beauty:
● The canyon is known for its sheer
cliffs and dramatic landscapes that
has a dark rock appearance mostly
from contrast of shadows and the
different light amounts.
● Much wildlife and plantlife to be
seen around the canyon including
elk, golden eagles, the elusive
peregrine falcon, one of the fastest
birds in the world, as well as some
plant life, such as poison ivy.
● The canyons appearance relates
back to the ability of nature over a
period of time, that can create
such amazing views.
River Activities:
● There are whitewater
rafting and kayaking
experiences available in the
Gunnison River, available
with permits.
● Includes guided lead trips
through challenging rapids
or float trips (scenic) for a
more relaxed experience.
Conservation Efforts:

● The park is home to some endangered wildlife including one known as the Gunnison
sage grouse.
● Hosts educational programs to promote preservation.
● Collaborates with communities and stakeholders for management.
Extra:

Chasm View: Stated to be one of the best viewing spots in the park. Able to visual the
Gunnison River winding through the canyon, as well as many interpretive signage. Can be
a popular spot for sunset photography.

The painted Wall: The park’s tallest cliff, rising over 2700 feet, featuring striking bands of
different rock colors.

Estimates around 350,000 visitors per year.
