WHAT IS ABUSE?
Abuse: It’s when someone harms another.

Can happen to any gender, caste, creed.

Abuse can occur in relationship, marriage, live-in or same-sex.


DEFINITION IN SECTION 3, IPC
For the purposes of this Act, any act, omission or commission or conduct of the
respondent shall constitute domestic violence in case it-
•harms or injures or endangers the health, safety, life, limb or well-being, whether
mental or physical, of the aggrieved person or tends to do so and includes causing
physical abuse, sexual abuse, verbal and emotional abuse and economic abuse;
•or harasses, harms, injures or endangers the aggrieved person with a view to coerce her
or any other person related to her to meet any unlawful demand for any dowry or other
property or valuable security;
•or |has the effect of threatening the aggrieved person or any person related to her by any
conduct mentioned in clause (a) or clause (b); or(d) otherwise injures or causes harm,
whether physical or mental, to the aggrieved person.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU’RE IN A
VIOLENT RELATIONSHIP
•You are frightened by your partner's temper.
•You are afraid to disagree with your partner; you feel guilty when you do.
•You have been kicked or shoved, or otherwise physically hurt by your partner.
•You are not allowed to see friends or family because of your partner’s jealousy or anger.
•You spend much of your time making apologies and promises to your partner.

• Is extremely jealous

• Wants to know where you are always.

•Blames you and other for their problems.

•attempt to isolate the partner from family and friends.

•Violating your privacy.


What to do if you are a victim of
relationship violence?
Report the abusive incident to appropriate authorities that can help. These might
include your local police department.
Consult with police and/or legal counsel regarding protective orders and restraining
orders.
If necessary, seek medical attention. Have injuries documented and photographed.
Go to a safe place such as a domestic violence shelter.
Seek the support of caring people. Tell someone you trust about the abuse. You might
choose a family member, friend, neighbor, or staff members.
Work with a mental health therapist to gain professional support, understand the cycle
of abuse, and strengthen your coping skills.
What to do if you think someone you
care about is in an abusive relationship:
Expressing your concern will let the person know that you care. It may even save
his/her life.
Talk to the person in private and let him/her know that you’re concerned. Point out
the things you’ve noticed that worry you.
Communicate that you’re available to talk safely and ready to help whenever he/she
feels ready to take action.
