INVERSE

FUNCTION
One to One Function

Definition of a One-to-one Function

A function with domain A is called a one-to-one function if no two
elements of A have the same image or value.

2009-2010 4110
2010-2011 3910
2011-2012 3760
2012-2013 3440
2013-2014 3210
2014-2015 3050
Consider this question:

"What was the student population of Manuel A.

Roxas High School in the school year 2009-
2010?”

To answer this, the data of the school's student

population, presented in this table of values is
needed.
The table suggests that the student population is a
function of the school year.
The answer to the question is 4,110 students. This can
be considered as the output of the function.

The input of the function is the school year 2009-

2010. The graph of the function, a scatter plot, is
shown below.
Consider the next question:

"In what school year was the student

population of Manuel A. Roxas High School
3,440?”

To answer this, the data of the school's student

population is presented here as table of values.
STUDENT SCHOOL YEAR
POPULATION
4110 2009-2010
3910 2010-2011
3760 2011-2012
3440 2012-2013
3210 2013-2014
3050 2014-2015
The table suggests that the school year is a function of
the student population.

The answer to the question is school year 2012-2013.

This can be considered as the output of the function.
The input of the function is 3,440 students.

The scatter plot for the function is shown below.

Note that the result of exchanging the input
(domain) and the output (range) values of the
function gives the inverse of the function.

This is the inverse of the function. If the inverse

is also a function, then, it is called inverse
function.
Find the domain and the range of each
function and its inverse. Then, determine
whether the inverse is also a function or not.
