SPIRITUAL
BENEFITS OF PRAYER
Seminar by Linda Mei Lin Koh, Ed.D.
PRAYER
DRAWS US CLOSER TO GOD
“Prayer is the opening of the
heart to God as to a friend. Not
that it is necessary in order to make known to
God what we are, but in order to enable us to
receive Him. Prayer does not bring God
down to us but brings us up to Him.”
Ellen G. White, Steps to Christ, p. 93
• When we spend time to pray, we
build a closer relationship with
our heavenly Father. We form a
connection with Him.
• We can talk to Him anytime,
anywhere.
“Let us draw near to God with a sincere
heart and with the full assurance that faith
brings, having our hearts sprinkled to
cleanse us from a guilty conscience and
having our bodies washed with pure water.”
Hebrews 10:22
“The Lord has bidden us to draw nigh to
Him and He will draw nigh to us; and
drawing nigh to Him, we receive the grace
by which to do those works which will be
rewarded at His hands.”
Ellen G. White Comments,
PRAYER
ENABLES US TO RESIST
TEMPTATION
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
Matthew 26:41
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls
around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
1 Peter 5:8
Through prayer, we can receive
strength to say no to sin.
PRAYER
IMPROVES OUR MENTAL
HEALTH
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every
situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God. And the peace of God,
which transcends all understanding, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7
Research Study
Researchers from Baylor University examined the
data of 1,714 volunteers who participated in their
recent Baylor Religion study, entitled, “Prayer,
Attachment to God, and Symptoms of
Anxiety-Related Disorders among U. S.
Adults.”
They found that people who pray to a loving and
protective God are less likely to experience
anxiety-related disorders, such as worry, fear, self-
consciousness, social anxiety and obsessive-
compulsive behavior.

PRAYER
INCREASES OUR
THANKFULNESS
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in
all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in
Christ Jesus.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
“Nothing tends more to promote health
of body and of soul than does a spirit
of gratitude and praise. It is a positive
duty to resist melancholy, discontented
thoughts and feelings—as much a duty
as it is to pray. If we are heaven-bound,
how can we go as a band of mourners,
groaning and complaining all along the
way to our Father's house?”
Ellen G. White,
Ministry of Healing, p.
25
“Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! While I
live I will praise the Lord; I will sing praises to my
God while I have my being.” Psalm 146:1-2

PRAYER
DEVELOPS A MORE
CHRISTLIKE
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain
conceit. Rather, in humility value others above
yourselves.” Philippians 2:3
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate
the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his
image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from
the Lord, who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18
Characteristics of
Christlikeness
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness.”
Galatians 5:22-23
“To be like Jesus is not just to stop committing a
few obvious sins such as lying, cheating,
gossiping, and thinking impure thoughts. To be
like Jesus is to always seek to do the will of the
Father. [It is] to come to the place where we
delight to do the will of God, however sacrificial
or unpleasant that may seem to us at the time,
simply because it is His will.”
