Installing Windows 10

• Most computers already have Windows 10 installed at time of purchase. All that is needed
is to turn on the computer and follow on-screen setup instructions.
• In business environments, the pre-installed Windows 10 is usually replaced with a different
version of Windows 10.

Hardware Requirements

• Windows 10 is designed to look and feel the same across all devices and systems.
• Minimum requirements are often not enough to meet a user’s needs. It is better to have
slightly more resources than what are the expected needs.

DVD Boot Installation

• DVD boot installations are the simplest method to install Windows 10.
• DVD boot installations are not recommended for high volume of installs because of the
amount of physical interaction required with the system during the install. DVD boot installs
are more suited for personal use or small organizations.
• DVD boot installs limit customization because the drivers and components included are
limited. To customize during an install, use removable media, such as USB storage.
• Installations using USB flash drives are faster than DVD drives because the interface is
faster.

Upgrading to Windows 10

• Windows 10 version upgrade paths:

• Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 can be upgraded to Windows 10
• Windows 8 needs to be upgraded to Windows 8.1, then upgraded to Windows 10
• Windows 10 edition upgrade paths:
• Choose an equal or better edition of Windows. For example, Windows 8.1 Home to
Windows 10 Home or Pro.
• Use upgrade option during install process.
• During an upgrade, user data and compatible applications are retained. Any that are not are
identified during the upgrade process.

Licensing Windows 10

• Licensing Windows 10 can be complex, especially when doing a volume license. Always
verify licensing details with Microsoft before purchasing.
• Licensing options:
• Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) license – This license is tied to the physical
device and cannot be transferred.
• Full package product (FPP) license – This license is purchased from a retail store and
generally includes install media and a product key. This license type is transferrable.
• Volume licensing – This license agreement is used by organizations to obtain software
directly from Microsoft to upgrade from an OEM license. This license type allows for
customizable installs using images.
• Cloud licensing – This license is an upgrade from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 10
Enterprise. This license type is enabled through Microsoft Azure AD.

website, in whole or in part.
OEM and FPP License Activation

• Activation status can be viewed on the Updates & Security page of the Settings app.
• The product key can be updated here, too.
• Significant hardware changes may require Windows 10 to be reactivated.
• FPP license allows 2 active automatic product activations, useful when transferring the
license to a new computer.

website, in whole or in part.
Volume License Activation

• Multiple Activation Key (MAK) – Similar to an OEM key, it can be activated online or by
phone. A MAK has an allowance for a specific number of computers, rather than just one.
• Key Management Service (KMS) – Requires you to install KMS on a computer. Product
keys are installed on the KMS server. Computers communicate with the KMS server on an
internal network, then the KMS server activates the product key online.
• Active Directory-based activation – Requires communication between a computer and an
Active Directory domain at least every 180 days.

Cengage. All Rights Reserved. May not be scanned, copied or duplicated, or posted to a publicly accessible
website, in whole or in part.
Troubleshooting MAK Activation

1. Ensure there is an Internet connection.

2. If there is no Internet connection, you can use phone-based activation.
3. If there is no Internet connection, and phone-based activation is not convenient, you can
use the Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT) as a proxy activation.
4. If the VAMT cannot communicate with the Internet, export information from the isolated
VAMT to a connected VAMT server for activation. After activation, export from the
connected VAMT to the isolated VAMT.
5. If retiring computers while trying to activate new computers, and you’ve exceeded your
maximum number of activations for a key, call the activation center and explain the
situation.

website, in whole or in part.
Troubleshooting KMS Activation

1. Make sure the KMS server is updated to support Windows 10 clients.

2. Client computers must be configured with a generic volume license key (GVLK).
3. Windows 10 KMS server requires a minimum activation threshold of 25 activation
attempts.
4. Verify that the service (SRV) record is present, and that the client computer can connect to
the KMS server. In multidomain environments, configure the DNSDomainPublishList
registry key on the KMS server to ensure the SRV record is created in all domains.
5. Verify the client computer has reconnected to the KMS server at least every 180 days. If
that isn’t possible, then use MAK activation instead.
6. Use the command slmgr /dlv to view detailed licensing information.

Troubleshooting Active Directory-Based Activation

1. Verify Windows has GVLK installed.

2. Verify Windows 10 is joined to Active Directory where Active Directory-based activation is
configured.
3. Verify Windows 10 can properly authenticate to Active Directory.
4. Verify Windows 10 has authenticated to Active Directory within the last 180 days.
5. Verify the KMS key for Windows 10 was installed for Active Directory-based activation.

Answer: b. Windows 10 Home

With only a need for a single computer, with simple business use, and a
need for easy-to-use features, Windows 10 Home has enough function
without too many bells and whistles or expense. If the business needs
grow, then an upgrade to Windows 10 Pro would be available.
