Title: Terrestrial and Coastal Navigation 1

Course: Navigation 2
Topic: Navigational and Catalogue Charts
Period: Prelim
Week: 3
Overview
• The topics for this session covers about Navigational and Catalogue
Charts use of notices to mariners in updating paper charts
Learning Outcomes
• L.O 1.2. After this sessions, the students should be able to
demonstrate the uses of the catalogue chart and notices to mariners
to select and update the appropriate nautical charts and publications
Introduction
• Navigational and catalogue charts are
essential tools for safe navigation at sea.
They provide information on water
depths, navigational aids, coastal
features, and other relevant details to
help mariners plan and execute their
voyages. However, the maritime
environment is dynamic, and changes
can occur over time due to natural
processes, human activities, or other
factors. To ensure that charts remain
accurate and up to date, mariners rely
on the Notice to Mariners (NTM)
system.
• Notice to Mariners is a system
used to disseminate important
information and updates to
navigational charts. Its purpose is
to inform mariners about changes,
corrections, or other relevant
information that may affect the
safety of navigation. The NTMs are
issued by hydrographic offices or
other authorized organizations
responsible for chart production.
Topic: Notice to Mariners
• The NTM typically contains details
about the change, including the
updated information, revised chart
symbols, or any other relevant
instructions or warnings. These
notices can cover a wide range of
topics, such as changes in buoy
positions, newly discovered dangers,
alterations to navigational aids, or
updates to coastal features.
Topic: Updating relevant publications

SAILING DIRECTIONS provide

detailed information on specific areas or
routes, including coastal navigation,
port approaches, and harbor details.
The NTM system is used to update
Sailing Directions with changes in
navigational aids, harbor facilities, and
other relevant information that may
affect mariners' passage planning.
Topic: Updating relevant publications

ADMIRALTY Digital List of Lights

(ADLL) contain information on
lighthouses, beacons, and other
navigational lights. The NTM system is
utilized to update Light Lists with
changes in light characteristics,
temporary light changes, or the
establishment of new lights. This
ensures that mariners have accurate
and current information on navigational
lights.
Topic: Updating relevant publications

ADMIRALTY TIDE TABLES provide

information on tidal predictions, tidal
currents, and tidal stream information.
The NTM system is used to update
these tables with changes in tidal data,
such as revisions in tidal heights or
changes in current patterns. By
incorporating these updates, mariners
can accurately plan their voyages and
navigate in tidal areas.
Topic: Updating relevant publications
ADMIRALTY List of Radio Signals
provides information on all aspects of
Maritime Radio Communications. It
provide details on radio beacons, radio
direction finding systems, and other
radio aids to navigation. The NTM
system is employed to update these
publications with changes in
frequencies, operational status, or the
establishment of new radio aids. This
ensures that mariners have accurate
information for radio navigation.

on specific ports, harbors, and coastal areas. The NTM

or any other relevant information that may affect mariners'
approach and navigation in specific areas.
