In order to appropriately diagnose the red eye, a methodical, structured
history and physical examination needs to be performed

A useful mnemonic to keep in mind all the emergent causes of red eye is
H Hyphema/Hypopyon (endophthalmitis)
C Conjunctivitis/Conjunctival hemorrhage
G Globe rupture,
F Foreign body,
U Uveitis/Ulcer
N Narrow angle closure glaucoma
K Keratitis (Herpes keratitis, herpes zoster ophthalmicus, UV),
S Scleritis.

Introduction
An important first question to ask is if the eye is painful or not
