MODULE 8:

Terminating and
Connecting Electrical
wiring and Electronic
circuits.
PREPARED BY:
JOSEPH DE GUZMAN
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
⦿Plan and prepare for termination and connection of electrical
wiring/electronic circuits
⦿Observe safety procedures in using tools and use appropriate
personal protective equipment at all times
⦿Identify the task to be undertaken to work safety in
accordance with OH&s guidelines and procedure.
Module 8:
Terminating and
Connecting Electrical
wiring and Electronic
circuits.
The Termination/ connection of electrical wiring and
electronics connections applies to the connection of
wiring and includes termination and connection of all
types of cords and cables, excluding specialist cables. If
you're planning any electrical project, learning the
basics of wiring materials and installation is the best
place to start.
A Material Specification
Material Specification
Materials was one of the basic needs in terms of electrical
wiring and electronics circuit, let's start first for the simple
electronics circuit materials. Checking and Preparing the
materials, tools and equipment needed are important so you
become familiar with this thing and the proper use of this
instrument according to the needs.
B. Task
Requirements
Task Requirements
Task Requirements is a In other words, task
collection of physical, functional, requirements motivate the managers to
mental and administrative needs that select appropriate resources (manpower,
should be covered by the assigned equipment, materials, etc) and assign them
resources: they serve as quality to a task to fully supply it with everything
criteria to approve suitability of suitable to this work (resources, in order to
resources. be assigned, should match the task
requirements).
C. Tools and
Equipment
Tools and Equipment

Basic Electronic Hand Tools and

Equipment
Electronic technicians in olden days
could get along with a set of screw drivers,
long nose, side cutter and soldering pencil in
troubleshooting.
Here are the following basic tools and equipments
needed for the repair of electronics devices and
appliances:
Tools and Equipment
1. Long Nose Pliers – is used for holding, bending and stretching the lead of
electronics component or connecting wire. See figure no. 1.

2. Side Cutter Pliers – is used for cutting or trimming of connecting wires or

terminal leads in the circuit board. See figure no. 2.

3. Flat Screw Driver – is used to drive or fasten negative slotted screws. See
figure no. 3.

4. Philips Screw Driver- is used to drive or fasten positive slotted screws. See
figure no. 4.

5. Soldering Pencil – is used to join two or more metal conductors with the
support of soldering lead melted around it. See figure no. 5.

6. Desoldering Tool – is used to unsoldered unwanted parts or component in

the circuit with the support of soldering pencil.
See figure no. 6.

1.Multitester – is used for measuring resistance, voltage and current.

2. Portable Electric Handrill – is used for boring hole/s in the plastics chassis or
metal chassis. See figure no.8.

3. Multi-Volts Power Supply –is used to supply the desired direct current voltages in the
circuit. See figure no.9.
D.OHS guidelines and procedure

An occupational health and safety (OHS) policy is

an employer’s written commitment to the health
and safety of both their employees and their
workplace.
Health and safety legislation requires all
employers to implement workplace health and
safety programs. A written OHS policy statement
can be very effective in promoting these programs.
A good OHS policy will also reduce costs
associated with workplace accidents, injuries, and
illnesses.
D.OHS guidelines and procedure
The company’s OHS committee must:
• Participate in the identification of workplace
hazards
• Conduct workplace inspections periodically
• Make recommendations to the employer with
regard to implementing and enforcing safe
work practices
• Record health and safety concerns from
employees, contractors, and visitors
• In collaboration with management, establish
and promote a workplace culture of health and
safety
D.OHS guidelines and procedure
Once you've drafted your policy, you need to
make sure it's implemented effectively. Doing so
requires you to:
• Recognize, evaluate, and control hazards
• Conduct regular workplace inspections
• Establish procedures for reporting and
investigating accidents and incidents
• Document and record safety-related activities
• Monitor management and staff to ensure they
are carrying out their health and safety
responsibilities
Review Regularly
After implementing your OHS
policy statement, make sure
you review it thoroughly
every year. Ensure that it
still meets the needs of
the workplace, corresponds

F. Electronics Kit

Electronic kits are pre-assembled kits that include all the pieces
needed and step-by-step instructions on how to assemble a
certain electronics gadget.

Electronics Various Parts Kit

This kit is suitable for electronic beginners. It can jumpstart

your project's essential needs like LED, jumper wires,
breadboard and lot more. If you are into Arduino and Raspberry
Pi, you will surely be needing this.
G.OHS
OHS, or Occupational Health
and Safety, is a
multidisciplinary practice
dealing with all aspects of
health and safety in the
workplace, with a strong focus
on preventing workplace
hazards.
H.Methods in termination and
connections according to job
specification

Demands for higher quality and higher production volume

have led to many innovations in wire termination.

For centuries, copper wire has been used as an electrical

conduit. But wire requires termination. Simple screw clamps
were originally used to terminate wire. Although screw
clamps are still used today, there are now numerous means
to terminate wires.
H.Methods in termination and
connections according to job
specification
Soldering
Soldering has been around since about 3,000 BC.
However, the first use in an electronics application was in
the early 20th century. Soldering offers flexibility, durability
and corrosion-resistance. Connections can be made and
removed easily, which simplifies prototyping and fieldwork.

Insulation Displacement Connections

Insulation displacement connectors
(IDC) are probably the fastest way to terminate
wires. IDCs were first used in the telecom
industry on small, stranded wire. The process
can quickly and efficiently terminate the
hundreds of wires in large patch panels.

Crimping
Crimping is the most commonly used method
of wire termination, and is most efficient for
high-volume wire termination. The
terminations are fast, clean and mechanically
Ultrasonic Welding strong.
Ultrasonic welding has been used to weld
plastics materials since the 1960s. According to
Tony DiFinizio, engineering manager at Stapla
Ultrasonics (Wilmington, MA), the first metal
applications were developed in the early 1980s.
Ultrasonic welding is used in various bonding
applications, such as joining such dissimilar
metals as copper, aluminum, nickel and brass.
Standardization of Quality
Quality is a relative term. A supplier of disposable
flashlights is going to have different quality standards than
manufacturers of heart pacemakers. Many industries have
some type of standard. The standard that is becoming very
popular in the wire industry is the IPC/WHMA-A-620
Specification on Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and
Wire Harness Assemblies. This document breaks down the
various acceptability standards for the different levels of
quality in wire processing. Termination methods are critical
in the wire industry for obvious reasons, and the standard
covers them extensively.
