BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Today, conversations about workforce readiness increasingly

center on the employability skills of Senior High School (SHS)
graduates. Educational institutions and policymakers must comprehend
the sufficiency of employability skills held by SHS graduates
considering changing labor markets and skill requirements. The study
conducted by Dela Cruz (2023) determined the level of employability
skills of Senior High School graduates in terms of teamwork,
communication, attendance and punctuality, productivity/resilience,
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Employability Skills of Senior Students

According to (Tuba, 2022), university graduates' unemployment has a detrimental

impact on the economy and leads to personal financial and psychological issues. It is

crucial to possess both non-technical skills known as employability skills and technical

knowledge regarding the field of graduation to land a job. Employability skills are those

that are applicable to all facets of business and that people need to find employment,

succeed in their careers, advance, and better themselves. Basic abilities, critical

thinking, resource management, interpersonal, system and technology usage, foreign

language proficiency, and information literacy are all examples of employability skills.
Employability Skills: The Need of the Graduates and the Employer

The employability skills are both important to the employers for

recruitment of right candidates but also to an individual for being able secure a job,

retain employment and move flexibly in the job market as well as for lifelong

learning. Employability involves much more than the ability of an individual to secure

that first job. It entails having the capability to network and market oneself, traverse

through a career and remain employable throughout life. It requires the ability

to ask questions, acquire new skills, identify, and evaluate options, flexibility, adapt

successfully to changes and to take initiatives (Sufia, 2014).

More and more graduates are facing unemployment in Malaysia.

In most business environments, people will need to collaborate effectively,

which is why hiring managers or employers place a high priority on communication

skills. Furthermore, employers expect graduates to have better thinking and

problem-solving abilities, the ability to plan their work, work in teams, display

professionalism, and use technology. These are the in-demand skill sets required to

boost the employability of graduates. Employers clearly expect graduates to have

multiple skill sets outside their area of expertise (Vincent, 2020).

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study is anchored on the Theory of Employability by

Yorke and Knight, (2004) which states that employability as the

outcome of one’s learning, achievements and understanding of

personal skills to be successful in employment in their chosen

career.
The theory of employability by Yorke and Knight (2004)
posits that employability is the result of an individual's learning,
achievements, and understanding of personal skills necessary for
success in their chosen career. It suggests that individuals need to
develop a range of skills beyond academic knowledge to thrive in
the job market. This theory emphasizes the importance of not only
acquiring technical skills but also interpersonal, communication,
problem-solving, and adaptability skills. This idea is extremely
pertinent to our study on the employability skills of SHS graduates
and serves as the foundation for a skill upgrading program.

The researchers have chosen the Input Process Output (IPO)
model. The IPO model comprises three phases: Input Process and
Output. In this illustration the input consists of the demographic profile
(age, gender, strand, and academic achievement) and employability
skills (communication skills, ICT skills, personal skills, and interpersonal
skills) of the respondents, namely senior high school students of Butuan
City Colleges Inc. Communication Skills involve the ability to convey
information effectively, both verbally and in writing. It includes listening,
speaking, writing, and non-verbal communication skills.
Meanwhile, Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
skills encompass the ability to use digital technologies effectively. This
includes proficiency in using computers, software applications, internet
navigation, and understanding basic programming concepts. On the
other hand, Personal Skills are individual attributes that contribute to
personal effectiveness and productivity. They include time
management, adaptability, self-motivation, resilience, and a positive
attitude toward work. However, Interpersonal skills involve the ability to
interact positively and effectively with others. This includes teamwork,
conflict resolution, empathy, and leadership skills.
The results and findings of this study shall benefit the following:

SHS Students: This study is significant for graduate students as it provides insights into the

current employability landscape and the skills demanded by employers. Understanding these skills

can help them tailor their learning experiences and prepare themselves better for the job market,

increasing their chances of securing employment and succeeding in their chosen careers.

Teachers: For teachers, this study offers valuable information on the specific skills and

competencies that are highly sought after by employers. Armed with this knowledge, educators can

align their teaching methods and curriculum to better equip students with the necessary employability

skills, thus enhancing their overall educational experience and prospects.

Parents: Parents play a crucial role in guiding their children's educational and career paths. This

study provides parents with insights into the skills and attributes that are essential for their children's

success in the workforce. Armed with this information, parents can support their children in developing

these skills, whether through extracurricular activities, additional training programs, or career guidance,

ultimately helping them achieve their career goals.

School Administration: School administration can use the findings of this study to assess the

effectiveness of their current curriculum and identify areas for improvement in terms of preparing

students for the job market. By understanding the specific employability skills that are in demand,

schools can tailor their programs and initiatives to better meet the needs of both students and

this information to refine their recruitment strategies, develop targeted
training programs, and provide relevant feedback to educational institutions,
ultimately contributing to a more skilled and productive workforce.
Research Design

This study will utilize the descriptive-correlational research

design. Descriptive correlational design is used in research studies that
provide static pictures of situations and establish the relationship
between different variables. In correlational research, two variables,
such as students’ Academic Achievements and Employability Skills,
are studied to establish their relationship. The design is appropriate for
the topic above because in conducting the study, the researcher must
collect data based on the relationship of the variables.
Furthermore, the relationship between Academic
Achievements and the Employability Skills of respondents
provides insights into the current employability landscape and the
skills demanded by employers. Understanding these skills can
help them tailor their learning experiences and prepare
themselves better for the job market, increasing their chances of
securing employment and succeeding in their chosen careers.

teachers on the nature of the study and assured them of the confidentiality of their identities.

Items in the questionnaire will be explained in the vernacular to enable the respondents to

respond accurately. The distribution of the questionnaire was done personally by the researcher.
CHAPTER II- RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Statistical Treatment

In analyzing and interpreting data, the following statistical tools were used:

Mean. It will be used to determine the mean, add together all the scores

of employability skills from the surveyed SHS graduates. Then, divide this sum

by the total number of graduates surveyed. This gives you a single number that

represents the average level of employability skills among the graduates.

Percentage. It will be used to determine the percentage, count how many

SHS graduates have a specific employability skill, then divide that number by the

total number of graduates surveyed and multiplied by 100. This tells you the

percentage of graduates with that skill.

Pearson Correlation Coefficient. It will be used to determine the strength

and direction of the linear relationship between these variables and employability

skills. This will help you understand which factors are significantly correlated with

employability skills and can be used as a basis for enhancement programs.
