BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
impact on the economy and leads to personal financial and psychological issues. It is
crucial to possess both non-technical skills known as employability skills and technical
knowledge regarding the field of graduation to land a job. Employability skills are those
that are applicable to all facets of business and that people need to find employment,
succeed in their careers, advance, and better themselves. Basic abilities, critical
language proficiency, and information literacy are all examples of employability skills.
Employability Skills: The Need of the Graduates and the Employer
recruitment of right candidates but also to an individual for being able secure a job,
retain employment and move flexibly in the job market as well as for lifelong
learning. Employability involves much more than the ability of an individual to secure
that first job. It entails having the capability to network and market oneself, traverse
through a career and remain employable throughout life. It requires the ability
to ask questions, acquire new skills, identify, and evaluate options, flexibility, adapt
problem-solving abilities, the ability to plan their work, work in teams, display
professionalism, and use technology. These are the in-demand skill sets required to
career.
The theory of employability by Yorke and Knight (2004)
posits that employability is the result of an individual's learning,
achievements, and understanding of personal skills necessary for
success in their chosen career. It suggests that individuals need to
develop a range of skills beyond academic knowledge to thrive in
the job market. This theory emphasizes the importance of not only
acquiring technical skills but also interpersonal, communication,
problem-solving, and adaptability skills. This idea is extremely
pertinent to our study on the employability skills of SHS graduates
and serves as the foundation for a skill upgrading program.

SHS Students: This study is significant for graduate students as it provides insights into the
current employability landscape and the skills demanded by employers. Understanding these skills
can help them tailor their learning experiences and prepare themselves better for the job market,
increasing their chances of securing employment and succeeding in their chosen careers.
Teachers: For teachers, this study offers valuable information on the specific skills and
competencies that are highly sought after by employers. Armed with this knowledge, educators can
align their teaching methods and curriculum to better equip students with the necessary employability
study provides parents with insights into the skills and attributes that are essential for their children's
success in the workforce. Armed with this information, parents can support their children in developing
these skills, whether through extracurricular activities, additional training programs, or career guidance,
School Administration: School administration can use the findings of this study to assess the
effectiveness of their current curriculum and identify areas for improvement in terms of preparing
students for the job market. By understanding the specific employability skills that are in demand,
schools can tailor their programs and initiatives to better meet the needs of both students and
Research Locale
The study will be conducted at Butuan City Colleges, Inc. The school is located at Chou building,
South Montilla Boulevard, Butuan City, beside the Solidmark Inc. The school offers Bachelor of Science in
Business Administration (BSBA) with 109 students, Bachelor of Science in Criminology (BSCRIM) with 107
students, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIS) with 29 students, Bachelor of Technical-
Vocational Teacher education (BTVTED) with 77 students. For Junior and Senior High School Program,
the Grade 7 has 16 students, Grade 8 has 15 students, Grade 9 has 20 students, Grade 10 has 9
students, Grade 11 ABM has 14 students, Grade 11 HUMSS has 62 students, Grade 12 ABM has 13
The Respondents
The respondents of this study will be the college students of Butuan City Colleges, Inc. who are
(BSCRIM), Bachelor of Science in Information System (BSIS), and Bachelor of Technical Vocational
Teacher Education (BTVTED) students of Butuan City Colleges, Inc. Based on the school Summary of
Enrollment List, there are 322 bona fide students for the academic year 2023 -2024. In data mining the
respondents, the researchers will use a simple random sampling. Simple random sampling is a type of
probability sampling in which the researcher randomly selects a subset of participants from a
population. Each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
CHAPTER II- RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Before the study, the researcher will ask permission from the schools President to conduct
the study. Upon its approval, the researcher wrote a letter to the High School Principal to ask
permission to allow the researcher to conduct the study on the school premises. Upon its
approval, the researchers will make a brief orientation to the respondents and classroom
teachers on the nature of the study and assured them of the confidentiality of their identities.
Items in the questionnaire will be explained in the vernacular to enable the respondents to
respond accurately. The distribution of the questionnaire was done personally by the researcher.

Statistical Treatment
In analyzing and interpreting data, the following statistical tools were used:
Mean. It will be used to determine the mean, add together all the scores
of employability skills from the surveyed SHS graduates. Then, divide this sum
by the total number of graduates surveyed. This gives you a single number that
SHS graduates have a specific employability skill, then divide that number by the
total number of graduates surveyed and multiplied by 100. This tells you the
and direction of the linear relationship between these variables and employability
skills. This will help you understand which factors are significantly correlated with
