Indian Ethos
Ethos is a set of beliefs, ideas, etc., about social behaviour and relationship of a
person or group. The basic idea is to find some harmony or happiness.
Indian Ethos is all about what can be termed as “national ethos”.
Indian ethos refers to the principles of self-management and governance of
society, entity or a system by wisdom as revealed and brought-forth by great
scriptures like Veda, Upanishads, Gita, Mahabharata, Bible and Quran.
According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, “Ethos are the moral ideas
and attitudes that belong to a particular group or society”.
Ethics are the notions that guides the individual and the society.
Ethos
Ethos is a discipline that examines ones morality or the moral standard of the
society. Ethics means expected standards in terms of personal and social welfare.
It includes honesty, morality, responsibility etc.
India has rich ethical traditions which envisioned in the scripture of land like the
BAGAVADGITA, the Upanishads etc. the rich Indian scriptures speak the
performance of right duty at right time in right manner.
NEED OF INDIAN ETHOS
Indian ethos are needed because of following reasons,

1. MANAGEMENT ATTITUDE
Top management having firm belief in values oriented involving whole in the management.
Profit is earned through service and satisfaction of all stakeholders, employees’ customers and
fulfillment of social responsibility.
2. HUMANIZING ORGANISATION
Looking at the three aspects of humane organization i,e., inter personal relations, man machine
equation and inner management through mental and spiritual growth of individual.
3. INTERIORIZING (SELF) MANAGEMENT
Self management are management by consciousness .when the soul manager the other four
members of human being namely the body mind, intellect and the heart , the conflict these four
have amongst them can be resolved.
4. SELF INTROSPECTION
It concentrates on self study, self analysis and self critics to locate areas of frictions and
disharmony a self examination of one’s thoughts emotions, sensation, passion and desire to
reduce and subdue the ego.
5. SELF DYNAMYSING MEDITATION
A dynamic meditation is meditation of transformation of lower consciousness into higher
consciousness and hence called transformation meditation. This will helpful to tackle multiple
problems.
6. ROLE OF INTUITION(FEELING)
Intuition is the act of coming to direct knowledge without any reasoning. Intuitive skills enable
one to cope with confidence the fluctuating changes in environment.
ELEMENT OF INDIAN ETHOS

 Ego sublimation rather than ego assertion


 Sacrificing spirit rather than fighting spirit.
 Team achievement rather than individual achievement
 Self control rather than outside control
 Concept of duties rather than concept of rights
 Yielding rather than dominating
EXAMPLES OF INDIAN ETHOS
1. TRIKARANASUDDHI-Purity and unity of thought, word and deed.
2. PAROPAKARARDHAM IDA SHAREERAM-the body is meant for serving others. By this
everyone serves others.
3. YAGNAYA CHARATHA-Treating job as a sacred offering. Don’t treat job as useless one.
4. PARASPAR DEVOBHAV-respect the others person as a divine being.
Ethics and Values
Values are ideas and beliefs we hold and are learnt from childhood. They are
imbibed from our parents and immediate surroundings. Caring for others, for
example, is a value.
Whereas, ethics test our values, it is the way we behave in difficult situations.
Ethics vs Ethos
The word “ethics” comes from the Greek word “ethos” which means “character” or
“custom.” Therefore, ethics combines the meaning of the word ethos with the wider
meaning of the word ethics.
Ethics: A system of moral values for a particular society or institution.
Ethos: Distinguishing character, sentiment, moral nature, or guiding beliefs of a person
or institution.
Ethics: Have a universal outlook.
Ethos: Comparatively more customized since it shows the identity and believes that can
be distinguished from others.
When the business values of a certain institution can be distinguished from another;
here, it is their attitudes and aspirations that contribute to formulating their business
ethos. Hence, ethos can be explained as the characteristic spirit of a culture, era, or
community as manifested by the attitudes and aspirations of its members.
Values in Upanishads
Aham Bramha Asmi: Life’s purpose is to grow conscious of this identity.
The interconnectedness of all creation: Sarve bhavantu sukhinah
Svabhava and swadharma: One’s true nature (intrinsic nature)and one’s right law of action.
Everyone has a distinct nature, function, truth and path.

What constitute Indian Ethos
Management is behavioral science and it has to be culture specific.
Indian ethos in management has as its basis, the culture base of India and as a country whose
culture has its roots in religion - it does draw its lessons from the religions of the land - be it
Hinduism, Buddhism, or any other.
Basic principles of Indian Ethos for
Management (IEM)
1. Immense potential, energy and talents for perfection as human being has the spirit within his
heart.
2. Holistic approach indicating unity between the Divine (The Divine means perfection in knowledge,
wisdom and power), individual self and the universe.
3. Subtle, intangible subject and gross tangible objects are equally important. One must develop
one’s Third Eye, Jnana Chaksu, the Eye of Wisdom, Vision, Insight and Foresight. Inner resources are
much more powerful than outer resources. Divine virtues are inner resources. Capital, materials and
plant & machinery are outer resources.
4. Karma Yoga (selfless work) offers double benefits, private benefit in the form of self purification
and public benefit.
5. Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam - Excellence at work through self-motivation and self-development with
devotion and without attachment.
6. Co-operation is a powerful instrument for team work and success in any enterprise involving
collective work.

A secretary who has worked for your corporation for fifteen years is involved in a car accident in
which she permanently loses the use of her right hand. Thus, she can no longer effectively type,
file, or perform many of the other functions that she previously had performed and that are
included in her job description.
Your corporation has a very tight budget and does not have sufficient funds to pay for an
additional secretary without reallocating budget items. The injured secretary has been very loyal
to your corporation, and you have been very satisfied with her work and dedication. She wants
to stay at her job.
