Lesson 20.

Charles’s Law
Learning Competency

At the end of this lesson, the given DepEd learning

competency should be met by the students.

Investigate the relationship between volume and

pressure at a constant temperature of a gas; volume
and temperature at constant pressure of a gas;
explain these relationships using the kinetic
molecular theory (S9MT-IIj-20).
Learning Objective

At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to

determine the relationship between volume and
temperature of ideal gases at constant pressure.
Learn about It

The relationship between volume

and temperature was first
discovered by Jacques Charles.

He theorized that the temperature

and the volume of a confined

gas are directly proportional given
that the pressure of the system is
held constant.

Charles’s Law
The proportionality sign can also be replaced by an equal
sign and a proportionality constant .

The equation can be rearranged to solve for the

proportionality constant , such that

.

Charles’s Law
This also means that whenever there is a change in
temperature, there is always a corresponding change in
volume such that their ratio will remain constant.

Charles’s Law
The equation can be further rewritten using 1 as a subscript
to indicate initial conditions and 2 to indicate final conditions:

Charles’s Law
In applying Charles’s law, always use Kelvin as the unit of
temperature. If the given information expresses temperature
in degrees Celsius or some other units, you need to convert it
first to Kelvin.

the neon gas if 100.0 L of it originally at 25 degree C
was heated at constant pressure to achieve a
new volume of 120.0 L.

Calculate the final volume of the gas, if it cools

from 300 oC to 200 oC. The initial volume of the
gas is 0.25 L.
