Indian Folk Art
 Passed down from one generation to another, Indian folk art is still alive
in many parts of the country. Being culturally diverse and distinct, a
variety of art forms have evolved over the years; some untouched by
modernisation, some adapting to new paint colours and materials.
 Despite sharing the common themes of mythology and nature, each of
these paintings are unique in their beauty and style.
 Made with natural dyes and colours these simple art forms can transport
you back in time rustic charm.
Phad Painting
-
A Tale Of
Tradition
PHAD PAINTING :
 Phad painting, also known as Phad, is a religious scroll painting and folk
painting style practised in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Traditionally,
this style of painting is done on a long piece of cloth or canvas, known as
Phad. The ‘Phads’ depicts the stories of Rajasthan’s folk deities, mostly
Pabuji and Devnarayan.
 The Bhopas, or priest-singers, traditionally carry painted phads with
them and these as the mobile temples of the folk deities, who are
worshipped by the Rebari community of the region.
 The phads of Pabuji are normally about 15 feet (4.6 m) in length, whereas
Devnarayan phads are typically 30 feet long. The phads are traditionally
painted with vegetable colours.
 The color palette consists of bright orange, red, yellow, black, blue, green &
brown.
 The phads mostly depict the heroic deeds and exploits of the local
rulers and warriors such as the gallant Rajput warrior Prithviraj
Chauhan, Amar Singh Rathore in the form of stories painted on
long scrolls.
The Present-Day
PHAD
PAINTINGS
 Like many art forms of India, the phad paintings were on the
verge of being faded away in the sands of time too. However, the
traditional Joshi family descendants took an active step to stop
this art form from being extinct by opening art classes for
interested artists and passing down the knowledge of creating
beautiful phad paintings, which have now made their way to the
traditional handicrafts of India sectors.
 A modern day Phad artist is skilled to narrate various interesting
and captivating stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata,
which have commendable artistic value !
