INTRODUCTION
Time has change and many changes have
happened in the 21st century. We have seen
the rise of artificial intelligence, virtual
reality, nanotechnology and much more. One
such technology that is so promising that it
can revolutionized the way we transfer the
data is li-fi.
So what exactly is lifi?
It is new member of wireless data
transmission family. Li-fi or light fidelity is
a high speed and fully wireless
communication technology similar to wi-fi.
It uses visible light rays to transfer data and
it is many times faster than wi-fi. It is
highly secure in comparison to wi-fi. It is
developed by the team of scientists lead by
prof. Harald haas at the university of
Edinburgh.

What is Li-Fi ?

• LIGHT-BASED COMMUNICATION
Li-Fi uses LED bulbs or other light sources to transmit data
by modulating the light intensity. This allows for faster,
more secure, and more efficient data transfer compared to
traditional radio frequency-based Wi-Fi.

Li-Fi can achieve data transfer rates of up to 224 Gbps, far
exceeding the capabilities of current Wi-Fi technology.

Illuminating the Future of
Wireless Technology
 Light Fidelity, or LiFi, is a cutting-edge wireless communication technology that utilizes
light waves to transmit data.
 Unlike traditional WiFi, which relies on radio waves, LiFi leverages the power of light to
enable high-speed, secure, and efficient wireless connectivity.
 LiFi technology utilizes light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to transmit data through rapid
variations in light intensity that are imperceptible to the human eye.
 These fluctuations are detected by a LiFi receiver, such as a photodiode, which converts
the light signals back into data.
 LiFi is still in its early stages of deployment, but it holds immense potential for
revolutionizing wireless communication.
 As it continues to evolve, LiFi may find applications in various sectors, including smart
homes, smart cities, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and even in areas where traditional
wireless technologies face limitations.

 In order for it all to work, the LED lights need to turn on and off. “Off”
transmits a zero and “on” transmits a one. But don’t think you have to sit under
a flickering light in order to stay connected.

The Power of Light: How Li-Fi
Works
The working of Li-Fi is very simple. There is a light emitter on one end i.e. an LED
transmitter, and a photo detector (light sensor) on the other.
The data input to the LED transmitter is encoded in to the light (technically referred to as
Visible Light Communication) by varying the flickering rate at which the LEDs flicker
‘on’ and ‘off’ to generate different strings of 1s and 0s.
In a typical setup, the transmitter (LED) is connected to the data network (Internet
through the modem) and the receiver (photo detector/light sensor) on the receiving end
receives the data as light signal and decodes the information, which is then displayed on
the device connected to the receiver.
The receiver (photo detector) registers a binary ‘1’ when the transmitter (LED) is ON
and a binary ‘0’ when the transmitter (LED) is OFF.
Thus flashing the LED numerous times or using an array of LEDs (perhaps of a few
different colours) will eventually provide data rates in the range of hundreds of Mbps.

INTEGRATED OPTICAL ATTOCELLS

Researchers are developing compact, integrated optical
attocells that can be seamlessly embedded into lighting

HYBRID LIFI-RF SYSTEMS

Combining LiFi and radio frequency (RF) wireless
technologies, such as Wi-Fi or 5G, can create hybrid
systems that leverage the strengths of both to provide
robust, high-speed, and mobile connectivity.

ADVANCED MODULATION TECHNIQUES

Innovative modulation schemes, such as Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) and
Visible Light Communication (VLC), are being
explored to further enhance LiFi's data rates, efficiency,
and reliability.

ADVANTAGES
 UNPARALLELED SECURITY

Li-Fi shines when it comes to security. The very nature of Li-Fi, which confines data
transmission to the range of visible light, offers inherent security advantages. Unlike
radio waves, light cannot penetrate walls or solid barriers easily, making it exceedingly
challenging for unauthorized users to intercept data. In essence, Li-Fi provides a secure
channel for data transfer.

 ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY

Li-Fi’s utilization of energy-efficient LEDs serves a dual purpose. Not only do they
transmit data, but they also illuminate spaces. This integration can lead to energy savings,
as separate lighting infrastructure becomes redundant. In a world increasingly concerned
with sustainability, Li-Fi’s eco-friendly attributes are a noteworthy advantage.

04/27/2024 PRESENTATION TITLE 15

 REDUCED INTERFERENCE

Traditional Wi-Fi networks often face interference from neighboring networks and
electronic devices operating in the crowded radio frequency spectrum. Li-Fi, by contrast,
operates in the optical spectrum, where electromagnetic interference is significantly
reduced. This translates to more stable and reliable connections.

 LOW LATENCY

Li-Fi technology offers incredibly low latency due to its rapid data transmission speeds.
This low latency is essential for applications that demand real-time responsiveness, such
as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

CONCLUSION

Although there’s still a long way to go to make this technology a commercial success, it
promises a great potential in the field of wireless internet.
By deployment of this technology, we can migrate to greener, cleaner, safer communication
networks. The very concept of Li-Fi promises to solve issues such as, shortage of radio-
frequency bandwidth and eliminates the disadvantages of Radio communication
technologies.
.Li-Fi is the upcoming and growing technology acting as catalyst for various other
developing and new inventions/technologies. Therefore, there is certainty of development of
future applications of the Li-Fi which can be extended to different platforms and various
walks of human life.
