Overlock Machine

The document discusses an overlock sewing machine, including its introduction, basic features, stitch types, parts, applications, feed system, and new developments. An overlock machine stitches over fabric edges for finishing, hemming, or seaming. It can produce 2, 3, 4, or 5 thread stitch types at speeds up to 5000 stitches per minute.

OVERLOCK SEWING MACHINE

INTRODUCTION
 An overedge is a kind of stitch that sews over the edge of one or two pieces
of cloth for edging, hemming, or seaming.
 An overlock is a kind of stitch that sews over the edge of one or two pieces
of cloth for edging, hemming or seaming.
 Overlocking is also referred to as “over edging”, “merrowing”, or
“serging”. Though “serging” technically refers to overlocking with cutters,
in practice the four terms are used interchangeably.

 This is how a overlock stitch looks like:

BASIC FEATURES
 Makes a class 500 that trims, stitch and overcast seams as
they sew.
 Up to 5000 stitches per minute.
 Stitch length vary from 0-5mm.
 Used to sew wide variety of items- from placemats to
draperies and even sportswear.
 Stitch is very elastic and can stretch up to 300%.
 Stitch can be made using 2,3,4, 5 threads, depending on the
no. of needles and looper
Overedge Machines
STITCH TYPES PRODUCED BY
OVEREDGE MACHINE.

 Stitch Type 503 [ 2 thread overedge]

 Stitch Type 504 [ 3 thread overedge]

 Stitch Type 514 [ 4 thread overedge]

 Stitch Type 516 [ 5 thread overedge]

PARTS OF MACHINE
Thread stand: There is four thread stand which holds the
bobbin.

Thread guide: Which indicates the way of the thread.

Four/Five thread stand: Two-needle and 2/3 looper thread
stand.

Tension Device: This ensures the tension of the thread.

Needle thread take-up lever: To hold the needle thread.

Looper thread take-up lever: To hold the looper thread and

easy to pass.
Presser foot: To press the fabric surface.

Throat plate: Help the fabric to move forward.

Feed dogs: To move the fabric to move forward by a distance.

Upper/ lower looper: To help in stitching .

Upper and lower knife: To cut the fabric edge.

Stitch controller: To control the length of stitch.

Foot pedal: To control the speed.

Hand wheel: To raise and lower the needle.

Chain Cutting Device

 The device is at the side of the overedge machine for the manual

cutting of the protruding soft chain of threads is called chain

cutting device.

 It is both horizontal and vertical.

 The severing is done automatically by sensor in the automatic

Chain Cutting device
Application
Overedge stitches are traditionally used for edging and light seaming.
Other applications include:

 Sewing netting

 Butt-seaming is used for joining the ends of piece.

 Flat-locking

 Edging emblems

 Purl stitching

 Rolled hemming
FEED SYSTEM
Differential feed:

• It utilizes two independently driven feed dogs. The

stroke of each feed dog can be adjusted separately.

• If the stroke of the front feed dog is greater, then the

fabric may be gather as it is sewn.

• If the rear feed dog has the greater stroke, then the fabric
may be stretched to provide a more extensible seam
Differential Feed Regulator

The differential feed is regulated by the differential feed

regulator, which adjust the rate at which the material is fed
under the foot.

It is used to prevent the fluting or wavy seams on stretch

material.
RATIO OF DIFFERENTIAL FEED
TWO THREAD OVEREDGE

• Stitch type 503.

• One needle and one looper.
• Best for finishing seam edges and allowances.
• Has little effect on fabric drape, and rarely causes a pressing
imprint.
• Frequently used for serging edges on men’s slacks, lightweight
fabrics.
• Unsuitable for seaming, because does not hold plies securely,
causing seam grin when stressed.
• Most useful for sewing knits, wovens.
• Can be used as a stable seam finish on loosely constructed, ravel
prone fabrics.
THREE THREAD OVEREDGE
 It is the most common over-edge stitch.
 The stitch class is 504.
 Stitch looks the same on both sides
 It has 3 thread , 2 looper.

 Used for finishing edges as a narrow, decorative,

rolled edge on napkins and scarves.
 Most useful for sewing knits, woven
 This is used for seaming of garments made up in
light weight knitted materials.
 The microprocessor enables the accurate calibration
of the stitch tension without manually adjusting
spring tensioners
 It also permits automatic cutting of the thread chain
at the beginning and end of the seams.
FOUR THREAD OVEREDGE
 2 needles and 2 loopers.

 Stitch no. is 514

 All 4 threads are necessary to sew a serged seam.

 Can be converted to both 2thread and 3thread overlock.

 Suitable for sewing woven and knits.

 Suitable for sewing blouses, shirts, skirts, pants, dresses, lingerie,

action wear, swim wear and even sleepwear.

 Decorative edging and finishing, seaming high-stress areas, mock

safety stitches which create extra strength while retaining flexibility.

FIVE THREAD OVEREDGE
 Stitches are formed by two or more groups of thread.
 Stitch class is 516.
 It has 2 needles and 3 loopers.

 The stitch formed is a combination of 2-thread chain stitch with a 3-thread

overlock.
 The left needle and lower looper form a 2-thread chain stitch.
 Extensibility of over edge stitch is higher (upto 30%)
 The left needle and lower looper form a 2-thread chain stitch.
 The seam is very durable, particularly for wovens.
 A very wide seam width is created when the chain is serged with 2 or 3 thread
stitch.
ADVANTAGES OF OVEREDGE
MACHINE

 An overlock stitch pattern typically allows for a significant amount of stretch.

 useful when sewing elastic or stretchy fabrics

 It can stitch a number of threads at a time.

 It trims the fabric to match the overlocked edge, so there are no raw edges visible

at all

 Use of looper to supply the lines of thread, makes it easier to contain the

materials edges within the seam.

NEW DEVELOPMENT

 Adopting high quality alloy steel :It facilitates stabilized sewing even at high
speed and the fully sealed structure prevents oil scattering which eliminates oil-
stained products.

 Adopting oil forcing revolving device: The new design assures fully
lubrication of the needle bar & prevents it from oil leaking problem.

 The new type upper threading structure: New design of the upper looper
mechanism provides easier threading operation . Besides, the looper inserts from
the front, which makes the replacing work simple & easy
World's first dry-head overlock machine

JUKI's technology for developing machines that require no oiling has created an
overlock machine with a maximum sewing speed of 6,000rpm.
 This overlock machine is capable of responding to the need high-quality sewing
performance.
 The needle bar, feed and looper mechanisms require no oiling. This means they
do not splash oil
 Reduction of operating noise and vibration
