WHAT IS FOOD?

Food is any substance consumed by an organism for nutritional


support. Food is usually of plant, animal, or fungal origin and
contains essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats,
proteins, vitamins, or minerals.

WHAT IS THE PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS OF
FOOD IN OUR BODY

1. Energy Production: Food is the source of vital energy for the body. Our body
functions by utilizing the energy from food. Food acts as fuel to generate energy in the
body.

2. Growth and Maintenance: During childhood, food helps in the growth of the
body. In later years, it helps in maintaining weight. Regular food intake is essential to
maintain a healthy weight.

3. Health: Some food materials act as supplements of vitamins, minerals, enzymes,


etc. If nutrient-rich food is taken, the need for certain medicine will not arise.

5. Heart Health: A healthy diet typically includes nutrient-dense foods from all of the major food

Following a healthy diet has many benefits, including building strong bones, protecting
the heart preventing disease, and boosting the mood.

PSYCOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS OF FOOD
1. Emotional Needs: Food can satisfy certain emotional needs, including a sense of security, love,
and attention. Familiar foods can make us feel secure, and the anticipation and fulfillment of
needs can be expressions of love and attention.

2. Social Connection: Sharing food can be a token of friendship and acceptance. In friendly
gatherings, we often try unfamiliar foods, which can broaden our food experiences .

3. Food Acceptance: Even a nutritionally balanced meal may not be satisfying if the foods included
are unfamiliar or distasteful to the individual. With time and repeated experience, unfamiliar
foods can become familiar, and new tastes can be formed.

4. Eating Behavior & Habits: What we eat affects how we feel. Food should make us feel good,
and making healthier and more mindful choices can manage compulsive eating, binging, and
weight gain. By taking charge of your appetite, you may also gain a feeling of calm, high energy
levels, and alertness from the foods you eat.
SOCIAL FUNCTIONS OF FOOD
1. Expressing Friendship: Food is a vehicle for expressing friendship1. Sharing food with someone
can be a sign of acceptance and respect.

2. Smoothing Social Interactions: Food can smooth social interactions. It can help to ease tension
and promote positive social experiences.

3. Showing Concern: Preparing and sharing food can be a way of showing concern for others.

4. Symbol of Social Status: Food can present social status and economic power. The type of food
one can afford and choose to eat can reflect their social standing.

5. Central to Special Occasions: Food is central to special occasions, traditional customs, and
etiquette activities. Rituals and celebrations are usually centered around food.

6. Cultural Representation: Food represents local culture. Traditional foods can reflect the history
and culture of a community.
