The Lion King is one of
Disney’s most legendary
classic animated films in
1994. Directed by Roger
Allers and Rob Minkoff,
this film received positive
reactions from critics
who praised the music,
story and animation. The
Lion King is the highest-
grossing animated film of
all time, grossing USD
766 million at that time.
This film also won two
Oscars and a Golden
Globe Award
In the 2000s, when Disney
was fervently remaking its
classic animated films into
live-action adaptations, The
Lion King was also part of
this list. Directed by Jon
Favreau, who previously
succeeded in bringing The
Jungle Book to life in 2016,
The Lion King returned to
grace the big screen with
the same story as its
original version. However,
this time, Simba and his
friends appeared with new
faces—not in animated
form, but in photorealistic
computer animation.
The result was not only a
nostalgic journey for past
audiences and a fresh
experience for current
viewers but also a visually
stunning one. Mufasa,
Simba, and even Timon
appeared like real
animals we often see in
the natural world. All of
this was enhanced by the
breathtaking landscape
that seemed authentically
situated in the African
wilderness.
From a storyline perspective, not many
changes were made in this film. The Lion
King still tells the tale of Simba (Donald
Glover, JD McCrary as young Simba), a
lion who idolizes his father, Mufasa
(James Earl Jones). Simba is groomed to
become the ruler of the Pride Lands,
succeeding Mufasa one day. However, his
greedy and envious uncle, Scar (Chiwetel
Ejiofor), desires the throne. Cunningly, he
devises a plan that leads to Mufasa’s
death and causes Simba to leave the
Pride Lands. Simba then encounters a
forest pig named Pumbaa (Seth Rogen)
and a meerkat named Timon (Billy
Eichner) who live carefree lives. With
Pumbaa and Timon, Simba enjoys his
days without burdens until he eventually
returns to the Pride Lands to confront his
deceitful uncle.
The early part of this film is
notably somber. Mufasa’s early
death sets a tone of sorrow
throughout the movie. The dark
ambiance is introduced from the
beginning when the film first
reveals Scar in his cave dwelling.
There isn’t much humor in the
initial quarter of this 118-minute
film.
However, the presence of Pumbaa
and Timon brings a refreshing
touch. They are incredibly funny
and can tickle the audience’s funny
bone with their comical antics. The
banter between this close-knit
animal duo is sure to make you
burst into laughter. The
performances of these two
creatures truly steal the spotlight
in the film. It could even be said
One drawback in this film is the lack of
emotional expression from the animals.
Comparing this live-action version to its
animated counterpart might be somewhat
unfair. In the animated version, the animals
freely expressed themselves through facial
expressions, a challenge in Jon’s photorealistic
adaptation. The animals in this version don’t
display emotions on their faces; instead,
emotions are conveyed through their speech
and body language.

Nevertheless, the film remains entertaining.

For those seeking nostalgia from their
childhood without dwelling too much on the
shortcomings, you can revisit the memories
with Simba’s adventure. Additionally, several
songs in the film will evoke childhood
memories.
Song
● The film opens with the song “Circle of Life.” Meanwhile, the soundtrack,
“Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” is only sung in its chorus in this adaptation.
“Hakuna Matata” is also featured. However, the iconic song “The Lion Sleeps
Tonight” from the original version will be reprised in this film. It is sure to
have you singing along and even laughing at how the song is performed as a
duet by Pumbaa and Timon. The Lion King is a visually indulgent remake that
pleases the audience’s eyes. Despite being less emotional, the film is quite
enjoyable and entertaining to watch.
