Time & Work
1) Fraction Work / LCM work
2) Joining and Leaving
3) Efficiency
4) Team
5) Pipes & Cisterns
6) Alternate working
7) MDH/W = Constant
Unit of Time : Days / Week / Hours / minutes
Commonly used : Days in questions where people are involved
hours/min in questions of pipes & cisterns
Work: Unitary approach – 1 unit work
LCM approach – Take LCM of all the days given in the question
For example : If A can do work in 10 days and B can do in 25 days
Then work = LCM (10,25) = 50 units
Basic Assumption: Work is done at uniform rate until unless mentioned
In the above example if we use unitary approach then
A does 1/10 work each day and B does 1/25 work each day
In the above example if we use LCM approach then
A does 50/10 = 5 units of work each day and B does 50/25= 2 units of
work each day
• Q1.A does a piece of work in 10 days working independently. B does
the same work in 15 days working independently. If both of them
work together, the work will be done in how many days?
• Q2.A and B can do a work independently in 20 & 30 days respectively.
Working together along with C, the three finish the work in 4 days C
working independently will take how many days to the work?
• Q4. A & B take 40 days & 60 days respectively to do a work working
independently.
• A starts working alone. After 5 days B joins him. In how many more
days will the work be completed?
Efficiency
Efficiency is basically rate of work (Work done per day)
Efficiency is inversely proportional to no. of days taken to complete the work
The wages received by the workers is directly proportional to their efficiency
• Q6. A is thrice as efficient as B and hence takes 6 days less than B to
complete a work. Both working together will take how many days to
do the same work?
Teams
Team x No. of Days = Constant
(xM + yW) D = Work = Constant
• Q8. A team of 4 men and 3 women finish a work in 8 days. The same
work is done by a team of 2 men and 4 women in 10 days. A team of
3 men and 1 woman would need how many days to finish the same
work?
• Q9. Inlet tap A can fill a cistern in 8 hours. Outlet tap B can drain out
the filled cistern in 10 hours. If both taps A & B are opened
simultaneously, in how many hours will the cistern be filled?
• Q10. A tank which usually gets filled in 6 hours, today took 8 hours
because of leak in the bottom. The filled tank, with inlet tap closed,
will completely drain out by the leak in how many hours?
