Q3 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We have chosen the genre Grime/ British Hip Hop and have developed, challenged and used the conventions of them throughout our music video. Firstly going with the conventions of Grime we have chosen a known artist who has been successful in the grime music industry (Skepta). We follow conventions such as moving camera shots& technique I have found out in my research many music videos have various use of cinematography including shots that may be little unstable looking.

This is a very good example of the conventions we followed, many artist in the grime industry like to show of expensive belongings in there video. Such as cars, houses, jewellery. In many occasions it has been rented out for example in Sneakboes and Skepta s music video there is a luxury car parked and used as a prop. This symbolises there wealth and success, therefore I have chosen to replicate this convention and use it in my music video. We have a Mercedes which Jamal performs in front of.

Devlin - Let It Go Ft Labrinth

At the start of the music video I have chosen to use a long shot to introduce two musicians to the audience, this means the story line will be allot more clear to the audience. I and my group were inspired from Devlin s music video above where himself and Labrinth are introduced at the start of the video. This is why we chose to capture a similar effect but with different cinematography shot.

Lighting

I have been inspired by Devlin Music Video Let it Go this is because the types of framing which have been used such as the cantering the artist in the middle of the frame. I have used similar conventions such as costuming. I made sure Jamal wore red and Tom wearing black. As I liked the Devlin video, this allowed me to re-construct a similar shot type and look. I really tried my hardest to imitate a similar look when filming my music video. I feel the lighting is similar to Devlins music video as both look bright and clear, this is the affect I wanted to create because it looks neat and creates a positive vibe and feeling to the audience. There fore I went with the conventions in this section of the music video.

Going Against Conventions

My music video
I have also chosen to go against many elements and conventions of Grime genre videos. I have made sure I don t have a grime/hood look in any of the locations which have been filmed in. After the research which I made on the Video Cash -Talk about Pain. I felt too create a different look, this was a more of a American Dream like look. Which included Luxury houses and big American Vehicles. As a result it worked out very well in the video, because its different to the audience and its against the stereo type on Grime music.

Phantasmagorical Body Technique

Me and Tom decided to use a different technique which is mainly used in the Pop industry this is called Phantasmagorical Body look. Its a theory by Carol Vernallis. This was done by filming the legs of a female performer before revealing her face. After this shot its a medium shot of the girl. The audience will therefore assume it was her legs and thighs in the previous shot. This was a techniques we experimented with and worked well.
