Introduction
• Bishop's Method is a limit equilibrium method
used to assess slope stability.
• Suitable for circular slip surfaces.
• Balances vertical forces and moments.
• It is simpler and sufficiently accurate.
Assumptions
• - Circular slip surface
• - Soil mass divided into vertical slices
• - Only vertical interslice forces considered
• - Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion applied
• - Each slice in vertical equilibrium
Symbols & Parameters
Symbol Description
W Weight of slice
N Normal force
u Pore pressure
l Base length
α Base angle
c', φ' Effective strength parameters
F Factor of safety
R Radius of slip circle
Mohr-Coulomb Shear Strength
• Shear strength S:
• S = c' + (N - u l) tan φ'
• Mobilized shear stress:
• τ=S/F
Vertical Force Equilibrium
• N cos α = W - U - τ sin α
• Substitute τ = (1/F)(c' + (N - U) tan φ')
• Solving for N:
• N = [W - U - (1/F)c' sin α + (1/F)U tan φ' sin
α] / [cos α + (1/F) tan φ' sin α]
Moment Equilibrium
• Total moment equilibrium about center of slip
circle:
• F = Σ[(c' l + (N - u l) tan φ') * r] / Σ(W sin α)
• N is substituted from vertical equilibrium
equation
Simplified Bishop's Equation
• F = Σ[(c' l + (W - u l) tan φ') * m_α] / Σ(W sin α)
• Where:
• m_α = 1 / [cos α + (tan φ'/F) sin α]
• This equation is solved iteratively.
Numerical Example - Data
Slice W (kN) α (°) l (m) u (kPa)
1 50 10 2.0 10
2 60 5 2.0 8
3 45 15 2.0 12
Numerical Example - Slice 1
• α = 10°, φ' = 25°
• u * l = 10 * 2 = 20
• m_α = 0.9612
• (c' l + (W - u l) tan φ') * m_α = 32.67
Numerical Example - Slice 2 & 3
• Repeat calculations for Slice 2 and 3.
• Sum numerators
• Sum W sin α for denominator
• Compute F = Numerator / Denominator
Iteration and Convergence
• Recalculate m_α using updated F
• Repeat calculation until F converges (change <
0.01)
• Typically 2–3 iterations
Conclusion
• Bishop's Method offers a balance of simplicity
and accuracy
• Ideal for circular slip surfaces
• Requires iterative solution
• Widely accepted in geotechnical engineering
