Fishery Refuge, Marine Protected Area
(MPA), Marine Sanctuary and Marine
reserve are the same meaning?
Meaning
Marine Defined area of the sea established and set aside by
Protected Area law, administrative regulation or any other effective
(MPA) means in order to conserve and protect a part of or
the entire enclosed environment thru the
establishment of management guidelines. It is

Fish Sanctuary A designated area where fishing or other forms of
activities which may damage the ecosystem of the
area is prohibited and human access may be restricted
Fishery Reserve A designated area where activities are regulated and
set aside for educational and research purposes.
PURPOSE AND IMPORTANCE:
LEGAL FRAMEWORK:
RA 8550 AS AMENDED RA 10654- This law provides
the legal basis for establishing fish refuges and
sanctuaries.
