Problem Statement: India's Waste
Crisis
• • India generates over 1.5 lakh tonnes of solid
waste daily (CPCB Report 2023)
• • Only 70% of waste is collected, 25%
processed scientifically
• • 40% of households face delayed waste
pickup (Swachh Bharat Survey 2023)
• • 35% of urban residents report garbage pile-
ups near homes
• • Manual segregation exposes sanitation
workers to health hazards
Survey Data & Insights
• • Waste Collection Efficiency: 70%
• • Scientific Processing: 25%
• • Uncollected/Delayed Waste: 45%
• → Automation can bridge this gap and ensure
timely collection.

Proposed Smart Solution
• • Smart dual-compartment dustbin (Blue: Dry,
Green: Wet)
• • Photoelectric sensors detect waste level
• • Arduino processes sensor data
• • GSM/Wi-Fi module transmits alerts to Nagar
Nigam App
• • Solar-powered, IoT-integrated system
• • Subscription: ₹100/month per household for
maintenance
Technical Diagram: Smart Dustbin Layout
Smart Waste Management App
• • Real-Time Monitoring: Displays bin status
(Empty / Full / Faulty) in the app.
• • Automatic Notifications: Sends instant
alerts and SMS to Nagar Nigam when a bin
is full.
• • Cloud Integration: Data uploaded
automatically from Arduino via GSM/Wi-Fi.
• • Route Optimization: Suggests most
efficient pickup routes for trucks.
• • Dashboard Access: Nagar Nigam control
center monitors all bins live.
Photoelectric Sensor Working
• • The sensor uses a light beam
(infrared/visible) between an emitter
and receiver.
• • Empty Dustbin → Light passes →
Signal = HIGH (1)
• • Full Dustbin → Light blocked by waste
→ Signal = LOW (0)
• • Arduino reads this signal and triggers
collection alert.
• • Enables contactless, reliable waste
detection.
Photoelectric Effect Explained
• • The receiver (photodiode) converts light
energy into electrical energy.
• • When photons hit the semiconductor
surface, electrons are emitted, creating
current.
• • If waste blocks the beam, current drops →
indicating the bin is full.
• • Principle allows precise, contactless level
detection.
• Source: Concept based on Einstein's
Photoelectric Effect Theory.
Benefits of the System
• • Reduces health risks for sanitation workers
• • Ensures timely waste collection
• • Encourages waste segregation
• • Promotes Smart City automation
• • Environmentally sustainable with solar and
IoT integration
Conclusion & Vision
• This project represents Swadeshi innovation
under Viksit Bharat Buildathon.
• It integrates technology with community
participation to create cleaner, smarter cities.
• By automating waste management, we
promote hygiene, efficiency, and sustainability.
