The Cultural Heart of Edmonton's Chinatown

Design Philosophy
Preserve the century old Cultural Chinatown characteristics. Co-exist with City of Edmonton's downtown development guiding document "The Quarters Downtown Urban Design Plan". Consistent with design principles presented in the document "Capital City Downtown Plan". Primary consideration: Replacement of public open space permenantly lost to the SE-LRT project. Other considerations:
Improve the Quality of Life for the neighbourhod develop a permenant multi-functional public open space Improve safety for pedestrians and multi-model users

Design Components - Festival Plaza


Festival Plaza Straddle across the LRT portal is a large open space suitable for staging a wide range of activities, such as carnivals, open air concerts, outdoor exhibitions and other cultural and entertainment events. It doubles as a neighourhood marketplace on weekends and special events.

Design Components Covered Corridors


Covered Corridors The covered corridor walkway provides shelter for citizens during inclement weather. Seats are also provided along the walkway to take a rest. Accommodates craft market on weekends and special events.

Design Components Tiered Gardens


Tiered Gardens Landscaped gardens with plants and benches on the tiered levels lead to the Festival Plaza via wheelchair accessible inclined pathway that is also pedestrian friendly. Citizens may take a pleasant rest and enjoy the view of the street level plaza below.

Design Components Entrance Feature


Entrance Feature A traditional Chinese Gateway stands at the top of the wide tiered stairs to greet visitors to the Festival Plaza. It provides a prominent landmark to identify the ethnic fabric of this neighbourhood.

Tiered Steps The traditional stone tiered steps leads upward to the Festival Plaza through the Entrance Feature. It provides a visual guide and a functional tie between the street level and the elevated level.

Design Components Pedway Link


Pedway Link To complete the flow of foot traffic, an open air pedway linkage will provide a practical and convenient solution for routing pedestrians. It offers a safe alternative to cross 102nd Avenue bisected by the LRT portal.
