LET’S ELABORATE

• Power Supply Unit (PSU) – a computer

hardware responsible in supplying all
computer components with power. The
power supply converts a 110 – 115 or 220
or 230 volt AC (alternating current) into a
steady low-voltage DC (direct current)
usable by the computer and rated by the
number of watts it generates.
• Circuit – a closed path that allows the electricity to
flow from one point to another. It may include
various electrical components such as transistors,
resistors, and capacitors. In computing, circuit may
be referred as the circuit board or an integrated
circuit. The large number or circuits inside the
computer allows them to route data to different
locations and perform complex calculations. For
example, a chip may route graphic operations to the
GPU and other operations of CPU. These
processors contain logic gates that can rapidly open
and close circuits.
• Wire – a single strand of metal that
transmits power or data from one area to
another. Wires are often protected in
plastic covering that is sometimes color-
coded to aid in identification.
• Cable - a group of conductors twisted or
bonded together to form a single case of
wire covered in plastic that transmits
power or data between devices or
locations.
• Conductors – materials that
permit electrons or electrical
current, heat and sound to
flow freely. Some example
of conductors are aluminum,
brass, bronze, copper, gold,
silver, iron and steel.
• Insulators – materials that resist or prevent
the carrying of electricity, heat and sound like
plastic, rubber and glass.

• Wire Termination – a cable termination that

connects the ends of the wire by making neat,
secure, low resistance and trouble-free
connections. It allows to connect to a device
such as switch and terminal. A properly
terminated wire uses connections or terminals
designed for a particular application.
• Multimeter – also known as circuit
analyzer, multitester and VOM (Volt-Ohm-
Meter) It is a handy instrument used to
measure electric current, voltage, and
resistance over several ranges of value.

• LAN Tester – also known as cable tester. It

is a device used to test the strength and
connectivity of a particular type of cable
and other wired assemblies.
TYPES OR WIRE
• Solid Wire – made up of a single piece of
metal. It is tougher than a stranded wire,
but rigid and less flexible. It is more
likely to break if subjected to frequent
flexing than the stranded wire.
• Stranded Wire – made or multiple small
strands, which group together to make up
a single conductor. It is more flexible than
a solid wire, but less durable.
TYPES OF COMPUTER CABLE
1. VGA Cable (Video Graphics Adapter) – known as D
sub-cable and analog video cable. It provides 640x480
resolution color display screen that utilizes analog signal
which is capable of lower resolution or quality display.
2. DVI Cable (Digital Visual Interface) – a video display
interface developed for transmitting digital video
content to display devices at resolution as high as
2560x1600.
3. HDMI Cable (High Definition Multimedia Interface) –
a cable responsible for transmitting high quality and
high bandwidth streams of audio and video between
devices.
4. PS/2 Cable (Personal System/2) – referred to as the
mouse port and keyboard port.
5. Ethernet Cable – also known as RJ45, LAN, or
CAT5 cable. It is a network cable that consists of
four twisted pairs of copper wire which provides
data transmission.
6. Audio Cable – connects computer speakers,
headphones and microphones.
7. USB Cable – a plug and play interface that allows
a computer to communicate with peripherals and
other devices.
8. Power Cable – known as power cord. It is the
primary cable the provides power to the computer,
printer, monitor and other components within.
