What is Cost Estimating?

Cost Estimating is our effort to predict the Cost of Projects, Production and Activities It is the foundation on which we base our decisions, if we want to accomplish things, and not waste our resources

Excel: 1. We can not find easily historical data 2. We need to do repetitive work (crew composition, productivity calculation) 3. We cannot share cost data with our colleagues. What if somebody leaves the company? 4. We need to do repetitive work to build the project schedule/program 5. We might forget cells when making sums 6. What if quantity takeoff changes? We need to manually input new data

What is the problem with common Estimating Methods?

With line items: 1. We cannot check how the unit price was extracted 2. It is time consuming to get updated costs if salaries or material prices change 3. We can not take into account local energy prices for equipment (heavy civil) 4. It is very easy to shoot out unit prices and thus make mistakes 5. We cannot get the activity durations.

What are Resource Cost Databases?

The Cost of all of our activities (usually described as BOQ Items), depends on the Cost of the Resources that we use. The resources are categorised as follows: - Material - Labour - Equipment - Subcontractor - Consumables There is always a relation between resources and cost. And this relation is captured in a Relational Resource Cost Database

Why use a Resource Cost Database?

It stores the relation between Tasks and Resources
