To School Committee Members:

This is to inform you of my decision to retire fro'm the Holyoke Public Schools at the end of my contract term, which would make my last day of service to the district June 30, 2013. I wanted to provide you with enough time to plan for and appoint a successor as superintendent. As a committee, you have provided the utmost support to me and my administration which is greatly appreciated. As individuals, you have been collegial, responsive and provided friendly advice at all times. It is without question where your hearts are with regards to Holyoke's children. I am also very appreciative of those numerous colleagues and supervisors over the four decades with whom I have worked and received support and guidance from, which makes them a part of every success I may have had during my career. Our staff members work very hard in an extremely challenging situation, and they deserve the highest commendation for their work and dedication to our students. I also want to acknowledge the many students whom I taught in my eighteen years as a teacher. I hope they learned something from me and enjoyed being in my classes. I certainly learned from them. Whatever I can do to provide for a smooth and effective transition is readily offered. We will continue to be devoted to carrying through our initiatives, some of these initiatives embedded in our District Improvement Plan, with some of the others focused on streamlining the budget process, overhauling our data system, and developing a potential district restructuring plan. As a school district, we have committed ourselves to respond to the critical literacy issues that affect our school children even prior to their entry to school. There will be no let up, whatsoever, in this commitment.
