As part of our integrated studies this year, our class read a funny book called Flat Stanley by
Jeff Brown. The book is about a young boy named Stanley who is accidentally squished "as flat
as a pancake" when a bulletin board falls on him. Stanley is very, very flat but otherwise fine.
The story tells of Stanleys adventures being flat. He can slide under doors, go down into
sidewalk grates, and even fold himself up small enough to fit into an envelope and be mailed to
exciting and interesting places.
I made a Pleasantville, NJ Flat Stanley. As you can see, I dressed him like a typical
Pleasantville character and wrote a journal about his life here in Pleasantville. Now I am
sending him to you along with a blank Flat Stanley for you to dress as a characterization of
your state. After a short visit, I would appreciate it if you would send them both back to me,
along with a journal (template enclosed) telling us something about your state and the exciting
things the FLAT STANLEYs saw or did on their visit. We would also appreciate it if you could
let us know approximately how far your city is from Pleasantville, New Jersey so that we can
calculate the number of miles FLAT STANLEY has traveled. Feel free to send him back with
any souvenirs from your state (such as pictures, postcards, maps, newspapers, etc.) and, of
course, some pictures.
Don't forget to fold Flat Stanley back up and send him with all his neat stuff in the envelope we
provided.
