10th SUNDAY OF LUKE (Gal. 4, 22-27) 9th December 2012
Today our Church celebrates the conception of Saint Anna, the mother of the
All-holy Theotokos, and so in our Holy Churches the appropriate epistle is
read. The reading is part of the letter that Paul sent to the Galatians , it talks
about Abrahams two sons Ismail and Isaac. Amongst other things it talks
about how one differs from the other, and the reasons for their differences,
and then finally using this analogy he compares earthly kingdoms with the
spiritual heavenly kingdom.
We will attempt to compare ourselves to one or the other, or both of
Abrahams sons. It is irrelevant which group we think we should belong to.
That which matters in Gods eyes is the reality of which one we spend the
majority of our time and effort being like. Paul reminds us that Ismail was
born naturally according to the law of the flesh, and Isaac was the result of
the promise God made to Abraham. One birth was physiological, in same
way that every other child on this earth was born, and the other birth was
supernatural. It is on this point that the Apostles analogy is based. The birth
of the Ever-virgin Mary, by her mother Anna, occurred in a supernatural way.
Something similar occurred with Sarah who was also barren.
The Apostle based todays epistle on Sarah and Hagar. Sarah was in reality
Abrahams legal wife. She was free from every human bond. Hagar was the
slave and servant of Abraham and Sarah. The descendants of Hagar are all of
the people who are the captives of this world and sin. They are the people
who believe and believed in worldly slavery and subjugated to it. They are

the ones who are counted with Ismail due to all of their worldly weaknesses.
They are the people who think that this life on earth is the only one. These
people are tied to a temporary, ephemeral soul-destroying state, in other
words the uncertain state of man.
On the other hand we have Sarahs freedom and that of her descendants.
Sarahs descendants are those who believed in the True God and awaited the
fulfilment of the prophecies and Gods promise. They are those who believe
in the just and all-powerful God and sacrificed for their faith in Him. They are
the people who, even under the shadow of the Law, were able to discern the
eternal life and blessing. They are those that even through the haze were
able to see a different way of life; the spiritual life that is called the Jerusalem
above, and all of this before the coming of the Messiah.
When through the fulfilment of time God visited this earth in person, in His
Theanthropic state, everything changed. Jesus Christ brought the neverfailing light and chased away the clouds of confusion from mans spiritual
atmosphere. All of the miracles created in the minds and hearts of people
nostalgia for the Jerusalem above. From then until today the light of truth
about real inheritance of the descendants of freedom has been made clear
and every doubt has been taken away. From then until today millions of
Saints have followed the Lord to the Jerusalem above and became
permanent citizens of Heaven.
From then every baptised and faithful person has been recorded as a citizen
on the register of the Jerusalem above and then take the appropriate stance
as the ex-citizens of the Jerusalem below. They become the soldiers of Christ
and come from every corner of the earth, they are armed with their faith in
Him, His Gospel and the hope of eternal life, they fight bravely confirming
their Christianity. They know that the descendants of Sarah are free. They
are not limited by borders, or family differences. They are not limited by
their country of origin, colour, language, gender or age. They are children of
the Church, which is the mother of all faithful Christians. The Church is a
mother that is not bound by the bonds of this world or of sin. Isaiah, with his
prophetic gift, talked of the establishment of the Church on earth: Be Glad
barren woman who does not bear; break forth and cry out, you who are not
in travail, for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the

married woman. Be filled with joy and delight oh my Church, because

before Christ came and before He brought the Holy Spirit you were barren.
Yes you may have had the letter of the Law, the Prophesies, historic
traditions, animal sacrifices, Jewish customs etc., but without the
Theanthoripc coming of the Lord and His life giving gift of the Holy Spirit, you
would not have been able to give birth to spiritual children. You see
brethren, Paul was an excellent scholar of pharisaic teaching and of the
ecclesiastical life of the Law. Despite this it was only when he knew Christ
and His salvific work, that he understood the deception in which he had
found himself. Then he understood the basis of pharisaic teaching, which
made him a child of Hagar. That is why he writes:
Now we brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

News from our Community-Parish

Our Greek School
Our End-of-Year Greek School Celebration held last Sunday was a huge
success. Everyone thought that both the program and the manner in which the
children played their roles were exemplary. Students recited their poems,
presented their sketches and sang Christmas carols with ease. Our concert was
honoured by the presence of His Grace Bishop Nikandros of Doryleon, His
Excellency the Consul-General of Greece in Adelaide Mr Ilias Maniakis Grivas,
the Chairman of the Ethnic Schools Board of SA Mr John Kiosoglou and other
guests. Fr Stavros congratulated the teaching-staff, parents, grandparents and
students for their self-sacrifices in undertaking the learning of the Greek
language. His Grace spoke with enthusiasm, praising the parents for their
endeavours in teaching their children the language of our forefathers and the
Church Fathers. His Excellency the Consul-General, who followed the program
with great interest, was moved and gave a message of optimism. The Chairman
of the Ethnic Schools Board SA Mr John Kiosoglou summarized the position of
the Governmant regarding the Greek language and called on everyone to
express their interest in their way. Again, Fr Stavros thanked those who have
been working for the progress of Greek language and its education within our

14

CVommunity- Parish and presented mementos to the teaching staff, danceteachers and the Coordinator of our School Mr Achilles Morias.

Finally, His

Grace the Bishop closed the celebration with prayer and best wishes for good
hilidays and a happy Christmas.

We heartily thank the parents who have

completed enrolment forms for the 2013 school-year already, we have sixty
enrolments.

A Pilgrims talk from Mount Athos

On Wednesday 19th December from 7-8 pm, we will have the opportunity to hear
the personal experiences from a gentleman who recently has visited the Holy
Mount in Greece.

A person who although is not an Orthodox Christian, is

seeking to find the true religion. So please come along on Wednesday night 19th
December from 7-8 and listen to what Mr Lawrence Johnson has to say about his
visit to the Holy Mount.

New Years Eve Dance

It seems that time is going so fast, that no sooner has one event finished, than
we are preparing another one. For example, when someone asked me a week
ago if tickets were available for our Community-Parish New Years Eve Dance, I
was taken aback. Hastily, I printed the tickets and they are now ready for
everyone looking forward to spending New Year in a delightful family
atmosphere. We shall follow the same programme as usual. Tsambikos will
entertain us with a great DJ; there will be a gold lira door-prize; and need I
mention the most delicious food, sweets and drinks? There are places still
available and tickets are the same price as last year.
