Myrtle Mountain Moguls

People have been skiing in Kimberley for 110 years now. Evah McGowan was a teacher in Kimberley in 1903 and used to take her students out on the slopes during recess. We can only assume that these were the first skiiers on the run which is now appropriately called Schoolhouse. Evah thought that her and her sisters were pretty hot to trot on the Skiiers at Myrtle Mountain in the 1930s. Photo courtesy of the slopes until the Norwegians came to town. The Kimberley Ski Club was formed in 1931 and a small cabin was built on the NorthStar Hill in 1934. By 1936 they needed a larger cabin and was built at the base of Myrtle Moutain. The new lodge was a beautiful log cabin with a large stone fireplace and a generator to run some electric lights. The ski run was even lit at times for night skiing. Since there was no lift skiiers had to earn their turns and hike to the top. Even though there was no lift; on weekends hundreds of people would ski the 4km from town over to the hill to get a few runs in. There were some great times had by all; some serious skills were developed and plenty of coffee and hot chocolate was drank in the fancy lodge. Then Hitler had to go and ruin everything. Many skiiers that were just getting to be in their prime were shipped off overseas to fight the Nazis. By the time they got back skiing had become so popular that the Kimbelrey Ski Club was outgrowing Myrtle Mountain and moved back to the North Star Hill. So next time your strolling through the Nature Park (perhaps at the KNPS guided snowshoe hike on Saturday January 12) and you get to Mytle Junction, try to spot where the lodge used to be. The run is a bit grown in but still noticeable and is a reminder of Kimberleys skiing heritage.

Two Skiers were on their way out to the slopes. One said, Where did you get your new skis? The second skier replied, Well, I was skiing along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman came up on these skis. She unclipped them from her bindings and threw them to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, Take what you want. The second skier nodded approvingly, Good choice; the clothes probably wouldnt have fit.

We would like to wish Trevor and the gaing at Kootenay Cycle a speedy recovery from this setback in their business. We are glad that nobody was hurt.

While we at Kimberley Chronicle would prefer to look at the past rather than predict the future, we believe that one thing will have to happen in the near future. Something needs to replace KIOTAC. Love them or hate them, accordions helped put a post-mine Kimberley on the map. We encourage everyone to read our issue #10 (available online via our facebook page - we also have a few coffee stained copies in our files) to learn how Bill Baerg and company helped start KIOTAC. We also encourage anyone wanting to start another festival or event to go have a chat with Bill over some homebrews; we will supply the homebrew and give your event free advertising for as long as it is wanted.
The Kimberley Branch of the Order of the Eastern Star is collecting postage stamps, Campbell Soup Labels and Pop Can Tabs for various charities. These items can be dropped off at Curves or at 960 Rotary.
