Welcome to the eighteenth edition of Kimberley Chronicle! With no end in sight to the NHL Lockout, we are looking to our own team - The Dynamiters and their storied past. The 1937 Dynamiters had an especially good run. In those days many of the players would rather keep their secure jobs at the mine than play in the NHL. This made for some excellent local hockey and great rivalries. We encourage anyone having hockey withdrawls to catch a live game at the Civic Centre and cheer on The Nitros. Kimberley Chronicle has recently joined this new up and coming social networking website called Facebook. We encourage people to go check out our page there. Back issues are in the process of being uploaded to the site. Eventually we will have a proper website but in the meantime we will use Facebook as well as our email address (kimberleychronicle@gmail.com) and a telephone to keep in contact with our readers (427-5430). Enjoy!

Kimberley already had a reputation for having good hockey teams before 1937. In 1926 The Kimberley Hocky Club won the Provincial Coy Cup with a one-armed goalie! (see issue #2) When the Dynamiters joined the Senior West Kootenay League in 1931 a fierce rivalry begain with the Trail Smoke Eaters which still thrives to this day. In 1934 the Nitros managed to beat the Smoke Eaters and win both the BC Championship, as well as the Western Canadian Championship for senior amateur hockey. They lost out to the Fort William Team but they now had the Allan Cup in their sights. In 1936 the Kimberley Dynamiters became the first team west of Regina to win the Allan Cup (Canadian Senior Amateur Champions)

As was the custom in those days the Nitros, being the Allan Cup Champions, were asked to represent Canada at the World Hockey Ice Championships in Europe. The team picked up a few ringers for the at 1937 team. In those days Cominco would actively scout and recruit players for their local team; the prospect a secure mining job in the 30s was a great recruitment tool. The Dynamiters completed a cross-country tour to prepare for the trip to Europe. They won 11 of the 14 games played with a combined score of 70-30. The Canadian teams they played at least gave them some competition. Once the team got to Europe they played another series of exhibition games in which their record was 18-0-1 with a combined score of 141-33. By the time the boys made it to London for the Championship they were unstoppable. They won the tournament in 8 straight games by outscoring the competition 60-4. Their tweed hat wearing goalie Ken Campbell had 6 shutouts. The World Champions played a few more exhibition games in Europe after the tournament. It was a long trip in those days and it made sense for the team to see some more of Europe while they were there. At one of those games in Germany a certain Adolph Hitler was apparently in attendance.

1) The Montreal Canadiens have won the most Stanley Cups, a total of 23. What team comes in second for total Stanley Cup wins? 2) Why are American elections always held on a Tuesday? 3) How many leagues have the Dynamiters played in? 4) If you could walk in a straight line from Kimberley to Victoria at an average speed of 3.5 km/hr how long would it take you to get there?
The original Stanley Cup was just seven inches high. The names of every player from each winning team is engraved on the base of the Cup. The cup and base now stands 35 inches high. On a relatively long-distance shot, 60 feet away from the goal, the goaltender will only have less than a half a second to react. Lord Stanley, the sixth Governor General of Canada, moved to England without ever having seen a Stanley Cup game. It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything. Joseph Stalin A citizen of America will cross the ocean to fight for democracy, but wont cross the street to vote in a national election. Bill Vaughan The problem with political jokes is they get elected. Henry Cate, VII
