Volume 7 June 4, 2012 www.kimberleychronicle.com We would like to welcome everyone to our seventh issue of Kimberley Chronicle! This issue has a slight wedding theme as that season is quickly approaching, as well as graduation season. We would like to take this time to congratulate the Class of 2012 as well as anyone having a 2012 wedding. The first page has a little history of Cominco Gardens, a place familiar with both weddings and graduations. Kimberley Chronicle is also pleased to announce that weve conducted our first interview and we have an article on page 2 about a very special lady that most people will recognize if theyve been to a wedding in Kimberley in the last 20 years. As per usual we love hearing feedback both negative and positive, and since our website isnt running yet, if anyone would like past issues please contact us at kimberleychronicle@gmail.com or call 427-5430. Now that gardening season is upon us, if anyone needs a break from weed pulling, deer fencing, or crop planting, they should take a stroll through Cominco Gardens. The Cominco Gardens were established in 1927 to showcase Elephant Brand Fertilizer which was made with sulphur - a by-product of ore production from the Sullivan Mine. In 1987 Cominico offered the Gardens as a gift to the City of Kimberley and its residents. Today it is still owned by the City and run by the non-profit Kimberley Community Development Society. The Cominco Gardens are open seven days a week and donations are always greatly appreciated. While you are stopping to smell the roses you can take a moment to appreciate that someone figured out a way to take a mining by-product, and turn it into something as useful as fertilizer. As the old saying goes When life gives you sulphur; develop a process for turning that sulphur into a successful fertilizer and create some beautiful gardens to showcase that fertilizer. We are all lucky that some smart and creative people have called Kimberley home over the years. How dare you treat your soil like dirt! - Joel Salatin New gardeners learn by trowel and error.

Cominco Gardens - Kimberley

Born in Keremeos in 1924, Kitty Bengston first came to Kimberley in 1946 with her husband Vern to visit Verns sister. Like so many others, she hasnt left. After a 30 year career at The Bay (Fields), Kitty decided that complete retirement was not her scene. In 1988 she became a marriage commissioner and for the next 21 years she proceeded to marry 1,030 couples. Chances are if youve been to a few weddings in Kimberley in Kimberley Heritage Museum the past two decades, Kitty was there officiating it. If you can think of a neat spot to have a wedding in our area, chances are 105 Spokane Street - above the library Kittys done a wedding there. Whether it was at the top of the Monday - Friday 1pm - 4pm ski hill, at Marysville Falls, or even at a surprise birthday party Phone: 250-427-7510 Email: kdhs@shawbiz.ca in the Legion, Kitty could make sure the knots were tied. Her Entry Fee - By Donation favourite spot however was in her beautiful backyard garden in Blarchmont. Thats not to say that she wasnt willing to don coveralls, hardhat, steel-toed boots, and a headlight to officiate Firewood For Sale a wedding underground at the Sullivan Mine shortly before it Pine, Unsplit & Delivered closed. Even the bride was dressed in full personal protective equipment, although she at least wore white coveralls for the $80/Pickup Load ceremony. Thankfully some miners were available to help hold 250-427-5430 Kittys headlamp from slipping down while she read the vows. Now that Kitty has retired from her Happy Hands Tattoo second career, she remembers fondly all of the interesting people that she was able to meet. 418 - 304th St 778-481-5000 Although at times it might feel like weve all been to a thousand weddings, Kitty Bengston kimberleychronicle@gmail.com is likely one of the few that actually has.
