On Saturday, September 10th, George Poulton passed away. George & his partner Millie Mitchell have been longtime residents & community supporters & activists that is George has been Millies supporter. They have most recently been vendors at Grandmas Kitchen at the Framers Market. George was often seen running back and forth between their home and the market with more baking for Millie to sell! George always had a smile for everyone he met, and he was one of the core of Merrittonians who make living in a small town such a pleasure. Georges smiling face will be sadly missed by many. By request, there will be no service for George. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to his favourite charity, Angels Animal Rescue.

This past Sunday, Sept. 11, the Canadian Country Music Assoc. honoured its 2011 Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame inductees at a special gala dinner & award ceremony. Michelle Wright, this year's artist inductee, was recognized for her outstanding contributions to Canada's country music landscape. Bill Langstroth, the host of one of Canada's first talent showcases, Singalong Jubilee, had his outstanding achievements in television production celebrated as an Industry Builder. Michelle and Bill will soon have their official plaques displayed at the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, right here in Merritt. They will also be acknowledged within the collections of the National Music Centre, which is to be opened in Calgary, AB in 2014.
Effective at 12noon today, the prohibitions currently in place in here in Merritt & Lytton will be extended and expanded to other areas in the Kamloops Fire Centre, due to the continued hot dry weather. The new prohibitions are in effect until Oct. 15, or until the order is lifted. The prohibitionsinclude: Campfires throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre (Merritt, Penticton, Kamloops and Salmon Arm, Vernon and Lillooet, except Clearwater.) Open burning of any description including waste, slash or other burning, whether piled or unpiled, of any size. Tiki torches, fireworks, burning barrels. The ban does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

Since Sept. 1, crews have responded to fires that may have been caused by power saws used to cut and buck-up firewood. People are asked to delay collecting wood until the fire risk decreases. Those who still plan to cut firewood are reminded that it's currently considered a high-risk activity across most of the Kamloops Fire Centre and subject to: All cutting must occur before 1 p.m. A "fire watcher" must remain on site for a minimum of 2 hours after cutting is completed.
