1. The Factor Theorem

a) b) c) d) Find Find Find Find a linear factor of x3 + 9x2 + 26x + 24 a linear and quadratic factor for x3 + 5x2 + 5x + 4 a linear and quadratic factor for y = x3 + 9x2 + 26x + 24 the three linear factors for x3 + 6x2 + 11x + 6

2. Sketching Cubic Graphs

Sketch the following graphs, showing clearly where they cross the x and y axes: a) b) c) d) y y y y = = = = (x (x x3 x3 + + + + 1)(x - 1)(x + 2) 2)(x2 + x 6) 9x2 + 26x + 24 6x2 + 11x + 6

Station B: Properties of the Discriminant Foldable

1. Three Part Foldable
1. Create the foldable:

2. Label each flap with the different possibilities for the discriminant (b2 4ac > 0, b2 - 4ac = 0, b2 4ac < 0) 3. Under each flap write down what the discriminant means for the solutions to the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0 4. Draw a sketch under each flap for what this means for the graph

Station C: Properties of the Discriminant Questions

1. Questions
a) For the equation x2 kx 4 = 0 write an inequality involving k for the equation to have: a. No real solutions b. One real solution c. Two distinct solutions b) The curve C is defined as y = x2 2x + 4 and the line L is y = kx. a. Show that any intersection between the two satisfies: k2 + 2k -12 0 b. Solve the inequality for k.

2. Exam Question
