EXTENDED RESPONSE

1. A section of a path along the edge of a river can be modelled by a cubic function for x ∈ [0, 20]. Measurements
are in metres. The co-ordinates of points on the path are (0,0), (3, -18), (4, -24) and (6, 72).

a. If the equation of the path along the river is modelled by the function , use your
CAS calculator to find the values of a, b, c, and d.

b. The bank of the river is 5 metres to the north of the centre of the path. Find the equation of the cubic function
which models the river bank.

c. Find the largest deviation of the path from the x axis using the equation found in part (a).
Express your answer correct to one decimal place.

2. An open box is constructed by cutting out square corners, with side length x cm from a sheet of cardboard paper
100 cm by 70 cm as shown below and then folding along the dotted lines.

a) Show that the volume of the open box is .

b) For what values of x would this function be defined?

c) Answering correct to one decimal places, find the maximum volume and the height of the box which gives
this maximum volume.

d) The manufacturer wants to make a box with a volume of 40 000 cm3. What is the smallest height that will
give this volume?

[2+1+2+1 = 6 marks]
3. A manufacturer uses wire of length 240 cm to make wire frames which are covered to produce bins. The
finished bins are cylindrical in shape. The wire frames are comprised of two circles and four straight pieces of
wire joining them as shown in the diagram below.
