The arrival of Air Pacifics new A330200 Airbus will enable Fiji to expand and sustain its connections to countries with a high number of out-bound tourists, says President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau. Speaking during the arrival of the Airbus at the Nadi International Airport, Ratu Epeli said the new planes will also open our economy to new and emerging markets like China, India and the greater Asian region, and perhaps even in Europe. The new planes and the expanded routes will contribute greatly to growing Fijis economy and its proud tradition of hospitality and tourism, he said. On the whole, Fijis tourist arrivals, including those from our traditional sources in Australia, New Zealand and America continue to reach unprecedented levels. I have no doubt that the new aircrafts will translate into even more arrivals, in the same way that they will help create more jobs and contribute significantly to sustaining our tourism industry as Fijis top foreign exchange and revenue earner. He said the new planes will also enable Fiji to increase our export opportunities to new markets and it is important for all Fijians to note that with these expanded opportunities comes greater responsibility for all. Our collective responsibility is to develop our country into one of the best tourist destinations in the world. We need to ensure that we provide unparalleled hospitality in an equally safe and environment-friendly destination. These will add great value

to the natural beauty of our islands and the uniqueness of our people. So, our challenge is to be among the best tourist destinations in the world! I have every confidence that we can do this and enjoy the fruits of our labour, he added. The President also thanked Air Pacifics managing director and chief executive Dave Pflieger, under whose leadership the airline made a huge turn-around from sustaining significant losses in previous years to raking-in profit in millions of dollars lately. The new Airbus which is named

Island of Taveuni (Fijis third main Island) is the first of the three planes to arrive into the country. The second Airbus which will arrive in May will be named Namuka-i-Lau, paying homage to Makereta Matemosi who designed the new identity for Fiji Airways while the name of the third Airbus will which is due to arrive in November will be revealed later. The wide body A330-200 is a large airliner with two passenger aisles, also known as a twin-aisle aircraft and can seat from seven to ten and in some

cases even eleven passengers abreast. It can carry from 200 to as many as 850 passengers in one flight. The three planes have a list price of $US600M and sport the latest lie-flat seats in business class and on-demand video throughout the plane. . It is the first time Air Pacific, 46 per cent owned by Qantas, has purchased wide-body aircraft and its first Airbus aircraft. Christened The Island of Taveuni, the new plane will go into

service on April 2 to Auckland. Air Pacific chief executive David Pflieger said the national carrier's success would help create more jobs and bring additional visitors, as well as boosting exports for the Fijian economy. Tourism accounts for about a third of Fijis economy and Air Pacific flies in almost two-thirds of the nations visitors.. The arrival of our first Airbus A330 carrying the new Fiji Airways brand and Island of Taveuni name represents an exciting future that is rooted in our more-than-60-year history and service to the people of Fiji as the nations flying ambassador, he said. Another new plane arrives in May, with the third due in November. The Rolls Royce-powered planes will replace two 24-year-old Boeing 747400s to give the airline a new level of operational efficiency. The carriers rebranding to Fiji Airways will officially take place in June and is part of a strategy aimed at capitalising on high global consumer awareness of Fiji as a holiday destination. Officials believed airlines current name and brand were not working because travelers did not associate Air Pacific with Fiji. The carriers research had shown that online holiday-related searches for the word Fiji were 10 times greater than those for Air Pacific and that the Fiji Airways name also drove interest in long-haul markets. In China, a key growth market, the airline was forced to refer to itself as Air Pacific, Fijis International Airline to avoid confusion with Cathay Pacific, Cebu Pacific and a Chinese air conditioning company. Meanwhile, people gathered in numbers at the Suva Foreshore to witness the first ever A330-200 Air Bus fly over Fiji's Capital.

The Airbus made its maiden voyage from France to Nadi via Hong Kong with President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and the First Lady Adi Koila Nailatikau onboard. Before touch own, the A330 did a flyby-over to certain locations to allow the people a chance to take a first glimpse of the aircraft. 68-year-old Sulueti Waqa of Lutu, Naitasiri who was in the city to sell her produce at the Suva market said when she came to hear about the Airbus, she became very excited and decided to be part of the group to witness the aircraft fly over them. "It is a proud moment for me to be part of this historic occasion and see the plane fly over us," she said in the Fijian language. "I will proudly go home and tell my grandchildren and others in the village about the plane and how special I felt to see it fly over my head." Benjamin Prasad, 7, a class two student of Suva said since hearing about the aircraft on radio, he was eagerly waiting the moment with his grandmother and mother. I want to be a pilot when I grow up and I want to fly an Airbus. It was very nice to see the new plane and I just want to fly in it sometime soon," he said. Rosemary Barry, a tourist on holiday from Australia said she had read about the Airbus and seen pictures of it on the website and in papers but to actually witness it live over her head was something different. The aircraft is simply beautiful. The outside features look great. The design is just amazing and I guess it truly reflects the culture and wonderfulness of Fiji and its people. For sure I would love to grab a flight on the Airbus in the near future," she added. Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum officially welcomed the new Airbus at the Nadi International Airport.

A senior officer in Fiji's military has rejected any criticism in a recent study indicating many Fijians want a smaller army with no political role. Lieutenant-Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga, the military's land forces commander, was responding to research by the Pacific Theological College's Institute of Research and Social Analysis. This study showed that many people want a military that is reduced in size and subservient to the elected civilian government. The study said Fijians want the military to continue playing a part in international peacekeeping and maintain its domestic role in disaster relief and building infrastructure. Perception But Colonel Tikoitoga said the military does not want to be involved in politics.

Fiji Army Will Respect Elected Government, Says Colonel

"At the moment the military is running the government, or is perceived to be running government. But is a civilian cabinet in place . . . ? Apart from the fact that the prime minister is the commander of the RFMF (Royal Fiji Military Forces), the Fiji military forces (are) not, as in the constitution, involved with the daily running of the governance of Fiji. "The RFMF has gone back to barracks." Colonel Tikoitoga said: "The army in the past has always been subservient to civilian government. "In any democratic government in the future, the army will be subservient to the government." The research was conducted using focus groups with a total of 330 people, and through in-depth interviews with 82 leaders.

The Chinese government through Fiji's Public Service Commission (PSC) was offering 32 new scholarships for Fijians who wish to study undergraduate, master's and doctoral degree programs in China, the Fijian government confirmed Tuesday. Five awards will be provided under the Chinese Government Unilateral Scholarship Scheme and 27 will be under the Chinese Government Scholarship Scheme, said a statement and adding that these will all be administered by the PSC. The disciplines in which students will be studying in China include agriculture, art, economics, education, engineering, law, literature, management, medicine and natural sciences. Parmesh Chand, permanent secretary of the commission called on students

in Fiji to take heed and make use of this "excellent opportunity" to study abroad, according to the statement. While the students will be sponsored by the Chinese government, the PSC will also provide supplementary allowances for them, said Chand. "Air fares to and from China will only be provided for the five awards under the Unilateral Scheme. The air fares for the other 27 scholarship awards will be provided by the Government of Fiji," Chand said. The increase in scholarships for students to study in China is part of the Fijian government's efforts to send Fijian students to new country destinations, he added. Earlier this year, China offered four master's scholarships to Fijian civil servants.

Household Data Collection Exercise Begins

The Fiji Bureau of Statistics has begun its survey of collecting important information from households across Fiji. Public Service Commission (PSC) permanent secretary Parmesh Chand said the 2013 Household Listing Exercise which started earlier this month will end this year on December 31st. We are therefore calling on members of the public to provide assistance and support to the Government Statistician Epeli Waqavonovono and his teams of data collectors, as household surveys are expensive and extremely challenging. We are also requesting public servants and their respective families to provide assistance in promoting this exercise as widely as possible and overall facilitate the provision of data collection. Mr Chand said that information collected from homes will be useful for disaster management planning, investment planning, students doing research, and assist in the planning of development projects. He revealed that alongside this exercise will be the 2013-2014 Household Income and Expenditure Surveys (HIES), which will be a year- long data collection activity that begins on 1 April 2013. Amongst other uses, information collected from the Household Income and Expenditure Survey will result in the re-weighing of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the compilation of poverty measures. Mr Chand said the result of these two exercises will provide primary data on which important decisions will be based and as such their accuracy and completeness are vital to decisions taken on any aspect of Fijis social and economic development.

NEW Zealand companies invested $342million into the local economy from 2005 to 2010, adding mileage to its third spot ranking as one of Fiji's top five investors behind China and Australia. Speaking at the Fiji-New Zealand trade and investment mission seminar at the Tanoa Plaza in Suva, Ministry of Industry and Trade permanent secretary Shaheen Ali said New Zealand had a long and positive history of trade with Fiji, noting more than $287million worth of exports were traded to Fiji. "Fiji is New Zealand's largest export partner in the Pacific while New Zealand is a key investment partner," he said. "Fiji's close proximity to New Zealand makes it a perfect market and a natural trading partner. "Fiji not only offers a market of 800,000 people but as a regional hub, provides access (duty free) to a market of over nine million around the Pacific. "Fiji is generating a strong interest among New Zealand investors." Acting head of mission at the Fiji High Commission in Wellington, Mere Tora,

said 12 business delegates were part of the seminar five were Fijian diaspora living in New Zealand while the other seven were potential investors. "They have connections to Asia and that goes with our current foreign policy of looking north. We can get leverage to other markets," she said. "This kind of mission and focus group is very important. I expect some real outcomes after this seminar. "They are business people so seeing what is really on the ground will help them make up their minds about investing in Fiji." She said trade agreements with New Zealand were organised by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat. "We've got the NZ-Fiji Business Council and a sister organisation called the Fiji-NZ Business Council so interaction has already been established. "But these businessmen are here and we want to show them what's here, encourage them to invest and trade with businesses in Fiji." The initiative includes site visits to various businesses in Suva followed by oneon-one business meetings.

Dont Pressure Fiji - Somare

Fiji should not be pressured into creating a constitution simply to please development partners or suppress criticisms from big foreign countries. This was the message from the former Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare during the 25th anniversary of the Melanesian Spearhead Group. The 25th anniversary of the Melanesian Spearhead Group Fijian celebrations is a three-day event. They began at the University of the South Pacific, Laucala Campus. I have counseled others not to pressure Fiji to artifically tinker with the constitution simply to appease development partners or to quell criticisms from our big boys in the region, Sir Michael said. Sir Michael said he always spoke out against a quick fix and had criticised attempts to impose prescriptions from foreign countries. I have cautioned against attempts to force Fiji to satisfy certain lofty ideals and pious principles for the sake of conformity and acceptance, he said. A one-fits-all solution risks being counterproductive if local conditions are not factored in. However, Sir Michael has sought the understanding and patience of foreign countries as Fijis new constitution aimed at restoring democracy is nearing completion. MSG must provide understanding and support that Fiji requires to navigate through its political challenges via the strategic framework for change, he said. The Fiji Government requires our patience and the Fiji people deserve our trust in their judgment. Sir Michael believes the constitution is for Fiji and the people should decide and no one else. He said this required the understanding of foreign countries. Whatever the end product, it is for Fiji and its people to decide and no one else, he said. We must respect this. MSG must be unequivocal on this point. I for one have no doubt in the wisdom

of the Fiji leaders and people to arrive at a responsible outcome, he said. Meanwhile, Sir Michael has urged MSG countries to establish the MSG Humanitarian and Emergency Response Force as soon as possible with Fiji as the leading example. Fiji can play a crucial role in this area and would be a guiding example to lead this course, he said. More often than not the devastation itself renders individual government responses inadequate. MSG countries are more prone to be affected by natural disasters, which have devastating effects on their economies and people and individual government efforts are inadequate. Almost every year our countries are subjected to the full fury of nature with devastating effects on our economies and peoples, Sir Michael said. A timely response from individual countries is often lacking because of

capacity constraints. This is further compounded by resource limitation, thus exacting unnecessary suffering of our peoples. Sir Michael has urged MSG members to resist the temptation of duplicating the work of other regional organisations. We must therefore choose carefully what we want to embark on and commit ourselves fully, both in political and requisite resources to accomplish the task, he said. Two issues which the former PNG Prime Minister suggested for the MSG governments to focus on were to assist the Kanaks of New Caledonia to exercise their right to self-determination and a nuclear-free Pacific. The highlights were the Melanesian Market Day, traditional sport competitions and the Pacific International Relations Forum where issues like the importance of MSG and what it does will be discussed.

Fijis proximity to New Zealand is beneficial for both countries, said the Permanent Secretary for Industry and Trade, Shaheen Ali. Mr Ali made these comments while addressing 12 prospective New Zealand-based business investors at the Trade and Investment Seminar in Tanoa Plaza. The delegates are in the country to check out prospective areas of potential investment organised by the Fiji High Commission in New Zealand and the Pacific Trade and Invest organisation. Mr Ali said New Zealand has been a key investment partner from 2005 to 2010 generating $342 million investment to Fiji.

Fiji, NZ Proximity Is Good Says Ali

I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity, and turn your plans of doing business in Fiji, into reality, Mr Ali said. Fijis close proximity to New Zealand makes it a perfect market and a natural trading partner of New Zealand (and vice versa). New Zealand has had a long and positive history of trade with Fiji and Fiji is New Zealands largest export partner in the Pacific. The seminar organised by Investment Fiji saw the involvement of representatives from various interesting sectors in the tourism sector, the Reserve Bank of Fiji and manufacturing.

18 Years For Rape

NO fair-minded person will consider a lenient sentence in an incestral rape case. Lautoka High Court judge Justice Sithambarampillay Thurairaja sounded these words while sentencing a man to 18 years imprisonment for raping his daughter. The incident took place on a night in 2006 after the victim had gone to attend Lautoka's Loloma Festival with a relative. According to the court proceedings, before the end of the festival that night, the accused took the victim home. The court was informed that later that night, the accused went to the victim's room and touched her private parts. When she woke up, she found her three-quarter pants and panty pulled down to her knees. She covered herself and went back to sleep, only to wake up again to find her father on top of her. Justice Thurairaja sentenced the accused to 18 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 16 years.

Representatives of a film company from India have been in Fiji for more than a week scouting for locations for a film they wish to shoot here. HARIKRIT FILMS, based in New Delhi, has set its sights on Fiji and plans to begin shooting the film as early as June. Producer and script writer J.V Manisha said unlike other films that have been shot here in Fiji she plans to bring something different with this film. Films have used the beautiful locations of Fiji but they have not really portrayed the real culture of the people. We want to do that and have heard that Fiji is a great place filled with hospitable people and a Government that promotes film making, Ms Manisha said. Together with Tarsem Antil, who is in charge of the post production of the film, they have visited Nadi, Ba and plan to also go to the islands for some location for the film.

Film Company Sees Potential In Shooting Films Here

The film Not willing to disclose the total investment of the film, Ms Manisha said it was a significant amount and would be the first of other films they wish to shoot here. The title of the movie is Page No. 217 and its a love story, with a lot of suspense, and a murder mystery in there as well but it will be a logical storyline, she said. As far as cast goes Ms Manisha mentioned Akhilendra Mishra, who is an Indian film and television character actor best known for his role in the Academy Award nominated film Lagaan. Local talent My partner and I want to give back to Fiji. The locations here are so beautiful, the people are so helpful and we want to also give back. HARIKRIT FILMS has been in the film industry for over 16 years and won numerous awards.

1209 Benefit From Cash Project

THOUSANDS of women in the Western Division have been assisted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the funding of various income-generating projects. Those that benefitted from this program were mostly flood-affected families in Nadi who are assisted through the first cash-for-work project to recover from the devastating effects of the two floods of early 2012. The cash for work program was implemented in Nadi and Rakiraki and benefitted 1209 individuals, of which 74 per cent were women. Women of Dratabu Village and Korociri and Vuniyasi settlements in Nadi were boosted with a surprise visit made by New York-based UNDP deputy assistant administrator and deputy regional director regional bureau for Asia and the Pacific Nicholas Rosellini at Dratabu Village. Mr Rosellini, who is in the country for the Pacific Symposium on Managing Extractive Industries, also took time out to visit farms in Nadi that were assisted by the program. He said he was pleased with the response and the efforts of some women they had assisted. "We are pleased to be able to assist villagers who are recovering from the effects of the cyclone and storm and it's good to hear first-hand some of the activities based on the program," said Mr Rosellini. "We will continue to help the villagers to be resilient and to improve their standard of livelihood." Mr Rosellini said UNDP was committed to assisting cyclone and flood-affected residents in their attempts to fully recover from losses and at the same time to aid them in becoming resilient should future disasters occur. "We are here to help villagers to recover quickly from flooding and other natural disasters and to help them to prepare better for the future." Sofiya Bi was one of 865 participants in the cash for work program in Nadi. "I was about to start my small store business when the floods came and destroyed everything," Ms Bi said. "I was left with the payment for the groceries I bought for my shop. A few months later, I joined the cash for work program in Vuniyasi. "Some of us sewed the eco-friendly bags while others worked on the farm to earn cash and recover from the floods. "I was able to finally open my shop. I also repaired the house damaged by the cyclone in December 2012 using the savings from the cash for work program," she said.

He reiterated the need to put health in the forefront of development and asked the elders of Uluiloli Village to ensure they created an environment that was conducive to health and one where health issues were discussed freely and allowed to be enhanced. Roko Tui Tailevu Ratu Semisi Saukawa said there was a need to work together and to treasure the lifestyle of their forefathers. "We need to work as a unit and as people of our own unique culture and traditions in working towards a common goal," Ratu Semisi said. Fire and life safety was the main focus of a recent awareness training program carried out by the Shangri-La's Fijian Resort and Spa. The training session was held at Cuvu District School and live training sessions and practical demonstrations were showcased for the students. The resort's fire and life safety manager Nemani Delaibatiki said the resort deemed fire and life safety as well as security a high priority. "Through this training, we would like to share the knowledge we have so that people in our surrounding community are in a much better position to help themselves in the event that a fire occurs," Mr Delaibatiki said. "We hope that through this training, as well

as through collaboration with the National Fire Authority of Fiji, we will be able to build a team of fire wardens in our schools and raise awareness about prevention as well among the community." Resort general manager Michael Monks said they hoped to encourage and spread the message regarding fire and life safety to the community. "We have been fortunate enough that the Coral Coast family of hotels is now registered with the Ministry of Education, which now allows us to carry out training for such critical life skills," Mr Monks said. Apart from Cuvu District School, similar training programs are expected to be held at Nadroumai Primary School and Sigatoka Special School.

Fijians Maybe Involved In Human Trafficking Overseas

The Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit suspects people from Fiji may be involved in human trafficking abroad. Director Razim Buksh says that funds derived from human trafficking, prostitution and other related crimes committed abroad often enter Fiji. Buksh says they have mechanisms where they can link up with relevant partner agencies here and abroad to investigate and monitor financial behavior of suspects involved in this kind of criminal activity.

Man Dies Of Burns

A man who was allegedly burned after a dispute with his wife, has died at the Lautoka Hospital. West Police spokesperson Naina Ragigia confirmed that the victim died at the Lautoka Hospital after being admitted for four days. The incident occurred a week ago after the victim, Mohammed Yakub, of Lawaki Place settlement in Lautoka sustained 79 per cent burns on his body. It was alleged that Mr Yakub returned home drunk at the time of the incident.

There are cases before us at the moment and we are investigating cases where we suspect international dimensions to prostitution activities here in Fiji we suspect that prostitutes from Fiji maybe sent abroad or sold abroad and brought back. We have traced few of the cases by way of financial transactions and remittances coming in. Buksh said that there have been cases where foreign nationals have entered the country and become involved in prostitution and pornography.

It is a first for Fiji, a Tax Judge has been appointed and a Tax Court established. Govt appointed Justice Chandrasiri Kotigalage as tax judge at the Suva High Court to oversee tax matters. In Nabua, a 27-year-old security officer of Mead Road consumed two bottle lids of Paraquat diluted in two glasses of water due to depression. He is currently admitted at the Sukuna Ward of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Forty-three attempted suicide and 25 suicide cases have been recorded so far this year.

A retired man set himself and his house on fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning following a dispute with his wife in Field 28 in Rarawai Housing Settlement in Ba. The 62-year-old deceased is believed to have intentionally poured kerosene on himself and the property before chasing his wife out of the property, locking the house from the inside and setting himself and the property on fire. Firefighters fought hard to extinguish the fire and stop it from spreading to nearby houses. The 12.1m x 9m corrugated iron and cement house was completely destroyed with its contents valued $52,360.00. National Fire Authority chief executive John OConnor said members of the community should seek professional counseling and help to try and resolve their family dispute and not resort to setting properties on fire to solve domestic issues. This year NFA has attended to six

deliberately lit or arson fire cases which have become a concern to the NFA as this has put the lives of other family members at risk. Our plea to the members of the community is to refrain from starting fires as fire is the most dangerous disaster that is hard to stop when it starts. People should never start fires with the intention to harm themselves because they are compromising the safety and wellbeing of their family members, their properties and other members of the community, OConnor said. Setting fire to ones property is not the solution to any problems and our humble plea to all members of the community is to refrain from resorting to the means of fire related activities such as burning their home and setting themselves on fire. The incident has increased the number of property fires to 27 so far this year and has resulted in second fire death for 2013.

The mother of a prisoner brutally beaten by Fiji authorities and exposed in a horrific video has confirmed it is her son. "Oh my son, oh Lord," Viriseini Sanawa told the Fiji Times after watching the video. "My heart is in pain." Her son is Iowane Benedito, 24, who was caught by Fiji police in November after he escaped from jail. A nine-minute video shows plainclothes police beating him and sexually torturing him. Fiji police say they are investigating the torture and refuse further comment but social media in the country has mostly identified the police, including prominent members of the Fijian rugby union, sevens and league sides. With signs that Fiji's military rulers fear the video is creating a security threat inside the country, the Fiji Times has taken the bold step of publishing Mrs Sanawa's story. The newspaper is being taken to court over breaching military decrees and if convicted will be forced to close. The Fiji Times said Mrs Sanawa's neighbour called her to watch what they believed was her son being brutalised by the group in the tray of a truck. "That's my son ... Iowane, my son," she

said on seeing it. "My heart aches when I watch how my son was treated like an animal," she said in Fijian with words translated by the newspaper. "I can't rest because I did not expect that what cannot be done to any human being was done to my son." Iowane's younger brother, Samisoni, told their younger sister not to watch the video and they begged their mother not to watch it. "I knelt down and cried asking the Lord to give me peace. No mother can accept this if this was their child." Mrs Sanawa said her son had done wrong and she would have accepted it if the security forces had locked him for a long time rather than brutalising him. His father, Vueti Sanawa, a retired military officer of 29 years, said he had given the best of his life serving the country and was disappointed. He said he would not find peace until justice "is done to those who are involved". "God knows who you are," he said. "He knows the pain we are suffering." In all his time as a soldier in the Middle East, he had never come across any torture such as that he witnessed of his son, he added.

Financial Skills For All Students

All schools in Fiji will start teaching financial education, exposing 197,000 students to new skills on how to better manage and invest money. The Financial Education (FinED) Fiji Project involves the integration of personal money management and investment into the school curriculum from classes one to eight and forms three to six. The Nadi Airport School is a pioneer Regional Financial Education Champion School and implemented the financial education curriculum in the classroom since May 2011. UNDP deputy assistant administrator and deputy director for Asia Pacific Nicholas Rosellini, who made a surprise visit to the school on Tuesday, said he was impressed with the standard of education at the Nadi-based school after interacting with teachers and students involved.

New Telecentre To Boost Education Reforms In Ba Province

One Hundred and sixty students of Ba Methodist High School in Nailaga, Ba will now have access to internet thanks to the opening of a new telecentre by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama. While officiating at the opening of the new telecentre, the Prime Minister reiterated governments commitment towards providing information technology services and resources in rural and isolated communities in the country. What I find equally exciting is that you dont have to travel at all these days to be connected to the world. You can be connected right here on a computer via the Internet. And you can broaden your horizons without leaving Ba at all. The Prime Minister said todays opening signifies governments commitment to raise the standard of living of ordinary Fijians. Im personally very proud of these Telecentres. They are a key element of my Governments promise to provide a world of difference for ordinary Fijians. Why? Because we are providing free access for the first time to one of the great advances of the modern age. It wasnt long ago that computers and the Internet were only for wealthier people in our town and cities. The opportunity to benefit from the information revolution was for them, not for ordinary people. The head of government encouraged students to make full use of this opportunity to enhance their learning and their education. To the school children here today I say make the most of this opportunity to gain knowledge and broaden your horizon. You can immediately be part of a bigger world, PM Bainimarama said. Ba Methodist High School principal Ms Aralai Gavidi thanked the Prime Minister for giving them this golden education opportunity. On behalf of the Marama Na Tui Ba and management of the school I would like to convey our deepest appreciation to you Sir. Thank you very much for taking this time to honor us with your visit, Ms Gavidi told the Prime Minister. She said todays event is a milestone achievement and one that will always be remembered by students and the community of Nailaga. The children will certainly remember this great moment in the history of their school when their countrys leader is gracing them with his presence, she said. We would like also to thank the Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum and his Ministry of Communication who made it possible to have this centre at Nailaga, she said. Divisional Education Officer Eastern Lorima Voravora commended the reforms delivered by Government towards making education more accessible. On behalf of the Ministry of Education we are most thankful to government for setting up yet another telecentre in Fiji here in Nailaga because it will not only cater for students but also for ordinary people in the area, Mr Voravora said. The centres will benefit students especially in carrying out their projects for internal assessments from class 1 to form 7. It will also help them in doing their research using the internet, Mr Voravora said. The telecenter at Ba Methodist is the seventh in the country and Government has put in place plans to open twenty more telecentres around the country. This centre will provide free internet and data access for hundreds of people in the surrounding areas. It will be used by students during school hours and for the rest of the community after hours. Ba Methodist High School was established in 1964 and today caters for students from form 3 to 7.

FIJIANS overseas now have the choice of remitting funds in a very quick and efficient way through HFC following the signing of an agent agreement with FEXCO Fiji Limited. The partnership will allow many Fijians working and residing abroad to send money to Fiji through HFC, one of 445,000 Western Union agents in 200 countries. "This arrangement will work as a conduit for our people who are residing overseas to remit funds to Fiji for investment in term deposit, for loan repayment or even gifts for their loved ones and families," said HFC chief executive officer Isikeli Tikoduadua. Western Union general manager Fiji Steven Narayan said HFC's unique financial products were an advantage over other agents. He said the partnership was ideal because they shared the same customeroriented focus. HFC will provide the Western Union services from April 2.

Former Revenue Collector Convicted

Former revenue collector for Fijis Judicial Department Ashwini Lata who is charged with 10 counts of embezzlement and forgery, changed her not guilty plea and was convicted. Lata who now pleads guilty appeared before Justice Paul Madigan at the High Court in Suva maintained a Not Guilty plea since she was charged in February 2011. Her lawyer Filimone Vosarogo told the court Lata had shown evidence of remorse by offering restitution of $1700 which is the sum of money she had embezzled. However Justice Madigan said offering restitution on the day of trial is no sign of remorse, as she had not indicated at earlier instances of wanting to pay the money back. The court then heard from Vosarogo that Lata has been unemployed since her termination and it took her time to get the money. Vosarogo then pleaded for a suspended sentence for Lata as she has a fouryear-old child to look after considering her age and her good character. Justice Madigan upon making his decision then ordered Lata to be kept in custody until a sentence is delivered. Lata on October 2009 embezzled a sum of $100 from the revenue collected on behalf of the Suva Magistrate Courts Civil Registry, which she had received by virtue of her employment, as she was the Revenue Collector for the Judicial Department at the time. In October 2009, Lata made false documents namely; the duplicate and triplicate copies of the Bank Lodgment Forms by altering the amount from $40 to $140. On 28 October 2009, Lata embezzled $200 from the revenue collected on behalf of the Suva Magistrate Courts Civil Registry, made false documents namely; the duplicate and triplicate copies of the Bank Lodgment Forms by altering the amount from $30 to $230. On 8 December 2009, Lata embezzled a sum of $500, made false documents namely; the duplicate and triplicate copies of the Bank Lodgment Forms by altering the amount from $15 to $515.00. On 23 December 2009, Lata embezzled $300, made false documents namely; the duplicate and triplicate copies of Bank Lodgment Forms by altering the amount from $78 to $378.10. On 14 January 2010, Lata embezzled $600, made false documents namely; the duplicate and the triplicate copies of the Bank Lodgment by altering the amount from $90to $690.

Draft Constitution Out

PRIME Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has released Fijis draft constitution yesterday. And instead of presenting the draft document to the Constituent Assembly, under the previous arrangement, Cmdr Bainimarama said it would be presented directly to the people. He said hard copies of the draft document would be available from various government outlets. "You will have until the 5th of April to give your feedback. You can give your feedback via email to a designated address, which will be announced in the next few days. You can write in your comments to the Solicitor General's office or drop them off there. You can even text your comments on the number 02. You can also post your comments via the Ministry of Information's Facebook page. In the next few days, we will also publish explanatory notes to help you understand each and every single section of the draft Constitution," Cmdr Bainimarama said in his national address. He said they would also publish explanatory notes in the next few days to help the general public understand each section of the draft Constitution.

THE draft constitution released by the government states that the size of Parliament shall be 45 with a four-year term. Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said the idea was to attract good quality and honest parliamentarians who "will be paid accordingly and who won't be corrupt".

He said the draft constitution "gives sovereign control to a single house in Parliament, which is represented by members elected by you". Cmdr Bainimarama said another key component of the draft constitution was that "for the first time in our history, it gives you the right to change the constitution once implemented via a referendum".

Fiji Named As Medium Development Country

Six Pacific island countries including Fiji have been named as the medium development groups in the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) report for human development 2013. The report also shows that Fijis employment-to-population ratio is 62.7 per cent while the Asia Pacific region has one of the highest employment-topopulation ratios 74.5 per cent above the world average of 65.8 percent. In launching the report UNDP Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Director for Asia and the Pacific Dr Nicholas Rosellini said all Pacific Island countries are covered in the human development index however the story for those where data is available suggests little movement since 2011 and in most cases there remains more to be done to regain the places achieved in 2007. Dr Rosellini said the report draws its title from an analysis of the human development index (HDI) performance for 40 developing or countries of the South. He said the analysis reveals that in these countries there have been significantly greater HDI gains since 1990 than would have been predicted based on their performance prior to 1990. He also said through SouthSouth Cooperation there were real opportunities for the Pacific as a region to create linkages between development initiatives in different countries.

Ports Solution
STEPS are being taken by the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL), Biosecurity Authority of Fiji and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority to find a solution to the congestion problem at wharves. At the Customs Brokers and Forwarders Council of Fiji (CBFCF) annual general meeting, issues were raised by local exporters and importers about the port congestion and its impact on stakeholders. Ports Terminal Limited general manager Eminoni Kurusiga said there were a lot of regulations that had come into place for inspections of empty containers that were going out. "We have started meeting with both organisations to try and eliminate this problem but we will continue with the talking until we come into some agreement where we can really move containers as fast as we can out of the wharf," Mr Kurusiga said. By doing this, he said they would be able to solve some problems to a certain extent. Ministry of Industry and Trade permanent secretary Shaheen Ali said they wanted to pose Fiji as a regional hub and were aware of the new challenges of levies and fees regarding congestion imposed on exporters and importers. "Such burden on our exporters and importers in the private sector should be minimised as much as possible. "We understand that this is not a problem that is isolated to a particular sector such as ports although they have outlined how they will address the issue, it is a problem concerning a Fijian private sector and Fiji industry," Mr Ali said. He said various bodies had written to the ministry and line minister about the congestion problems. Mr Ali said they were taking a holistic approach in tackling the issues. The ministry had been in talks with FPCL with the national trade facilitation committee expected to discuss and address the levy and fees issue as well as find ways to reduce the congestion that burdened exports and importers. Mr Ali said the ministry wanted to concentrate on the long-term solution so that the problem would not be repeated. "Perhaps we should have been looking at this problem a long time ago before they emerged as problems," he said. The ministry would work with stakeholders to identify areas that could increase capacity and cater for the lack of space at ports of entry.

ADHERENCE to the timelines the government has set is critical if the country is to hold elections by September 2014, says Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. "A key aspect of holding the election is to ensure that we have an electoral system that does not allow fraud and that we have public awareness and education about the new electoral system," Cmdr Bainimarama said. He said they would need at least 15 months to prepare for such elections. Cmdr Bainimarama made these comments in his national address after expressing his disappointment on the lack of commitment by the political parties to register under the requirements of the law, citing allegations of fraud and impersonation.

Dave Pflieger Vision Now Flying Well

Pacifics performance meant having the best team in place, something that he is now leaving behind for his successor. He said getting international banks to invest in the new air busses which comes at an approximate cost of USD200 million each, meant that their credible was being recognized. growth. I am leaving Air Pacific with a great team intact to carry it on and more importantly, we are leaving it in an amazingly better place than it was three years ago. We never could have, in our wildest dreams, done this if we did not have a great team with a plan thats working. people who crank out these airplanes, three a month or something like that, and they were all going over the hangar to see our airplane. Some of the stuff that we did that had worked for us at Virgin America, we thought of trying some of those things out here and at the end of the day if we have people buying tickets and flying on Fiji Airways as opposed to the competition, wow, great for us, more passengers, greater yield. If we are able to handle the planes in terms of profits then we can buy more planes, grow the airline, grow the jobs, tourism and economy. It is fantastic. The turnaround of Air Pacific, Mr Pflieger said, was all team work. No one person made this happen. It had to be a team effort. There was no one superman. We had a brand new team at the top and we have established our relationships with our unions. I was with the Union officials here about a month and a half ago and at the end of the meeting, one of the officials reached out and said I want to thank you for your hard work, and my answer was that this was not my vision but our vision. We achieved this together.

Leaving behind fond memories

Dave Pflieger
Managing director/chief executive officer Dave Pflieger will leave the country after deciding not to renew his contract but he will leave Air Pacific in a much better place than when he came. After the arrival of the first of three brand new Airbus A330s, Mr Pflieger reflected on his three years leading Air Pacific and the hard work undergone to turn around the performance of the national airline. Mr Pflieger said he would be leaving Fiji with fond memories, adding that he would miss the warmth of Fijian people the most. When he joined the national airline, he had a vision, and a part of it was realised when the first A330 taxied in at the Nadi International Airport to a cheering crowd. Mr Pflieger said the turnaround in Air

I love Fiji. I am just dazzled and privileged to have been here. The people are fantastic and the country is stunning. I would absolutely come back to Fiji, and in-fact my wife and children are ready to come back. Mr Pflieger said he had achieved the vision that he had set for Air Pacific when he had joined three years ago. I have always tried, wherever I had been, in leaving the organisation that I had worked for, better than I found it. I and the team, have done that and I am very proud of it. Also am fortunate enough to have been the architect, if you please, to rescue and revitalisation of Fijis national airline. We have built the ship now. We have crewed it with the top notch world class team and we have set the course for the future. Now, it just has to fly.

Successor

Mr Pflieger has been playing an integral role in finding his successor. He said there was much interest amongst locals and expats to fill in his roles. It is fantastic. We have had tonnes of interest from people inside and outside the country. The best thing is that there is so much interest because of what we have got in front of you. We have focused on the basics, the teams, the performance, customer service, we have fixed the hard stuff- the fleet and network, including rebranding and new airplanes. When someone else comes in, it is going to be like, take the delivery of the new airplanes, potential

This is after 17 locals, including BAF officers and fumigators, participated in Australian Fumigation Accreditation Scheme (AFAS) training at the Holiday Inn in Suva. BAF acting chief executive, Waisiki Gonemaituba said the AFAS accreditation will ensure Fiji has the same fumigation standard as Australia and other AFAS accredited countries like India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. With the implementation of AFAS, Fiji would have an improved capability to treat products requiring fumigation for export to Australia and other markets, he said. faster clearance of cargo from Fiji at the ports as well as increased surety of clearance and reduction in costs for local exporters. Fijian exports to Australia would also be promoted as Australian importers would have increased confidence that goods fumigated by accredited fumigators in Fiji would meet Australias quarantine requirements, he said. Moreover, Gonemaituba said the AFAS Scheme would also enhance the marketability of Fijian products to other AFAS accredited countries and assist local businesses by reducing import and export costs. He further said AFAS will contribute to environmentally sustainable development with the decreased use of methyl bromide- a known ozone depleting gas associated with a number of occupational health and safety issues.

This is the first step towards the Tropik Wood providing wood chips for biomass to the Korean investor. Chief executive and chairman of Tropik Woods, Faiz Khan said that there is no such thing as waste in todays market. This joint venture agreement is about developing biomass energy plants in Fiji and we are thinking of exporting biomass from our Wairiki plant and also looking at developing rural gasification, Khan said. He added that they wanted to start their project in Nabouwalu because

although there is a power grid there, they still use diesel generator to supply power to Nabouwalu town. Khan said the venture will help ease Fijis reliance on fossil fuels. The Korean company is also expected to assist Tropik Woods to revive its own troubled bio-mass energy plant in Drasa which is worth $33million but has not been beneficial as it has burnt down twice in the past couple of years. Meanwhile, GIMCO Fiji chief executive, Jae Suk Song said they were planning to expand their business in Fiji especially in the area of independent power producers (IPP). We are also interested to assist Fiji in their rural electrification projects through the department of energy and our people can help with the skills training for the local people in this area, he said.

Lawyer Wins Trip To Hong Kong

Lucrative Business
THE money lending business in Fiji is worth $2 million per year says Consumer Council of Fiji chief executive officer Premila Kumar citing a 2007 report by the Fiji Institute of Applied Studies. Mrs Kumar said 181 licenses were issued to moneylenders since 2012, an increase of 13 per cent from 2007. She said this suggested a lucrative and burgeoning demand, while calling for a review of the Moneylenders Act. "The Moneylenders Act (Cap 234) old legislation (1938) was adopted when the reach of commercial banking was limited geographically and the economy was predominantly agriculture and subsistence-based; initially to regulate non-financial transaction in the agriculture section," Mrs Kumar said. Despite the notoriety of moneylenders, high interest rates and operations of illegal lenders, many consumers continued to access credit from those lenders. "Unlicensed and illegal moneylenders are very hard to track because of the lack of documentation, paper trail and information." Mrs Kumar said many complaints were lodged without documentary proof such as agreements, receipts or full details of the moneylender.

FHL Buys Yasana Holdings

FIJIAN Holdings Limited (FHL) is a new owner of Yasana Holdings Limited. This was after a recent announcement that FHL had bought Yasana Holdings for $24 million. In a statement from FHL, group chairman Iowane Naiveli said the acquisition was a project in the making for the past 24 months. He said it was a transaction that would result in maximising synergies between two indigenous companies. "Part of the consideration involves the full settlement of iTaukei Affairs Board's (iTAB) outstanding loan to FHL which stands at $15.82m as of March 15, 2013. This was a result of $20m loan iTAB borrowed from FHL in August 2010. Yasana Holdings Limited is owned by iTAB and 14 provincial councils. YHL owns 51 per cent of Fiji Television Limited as well as investments in ATH, RB Patel Group, FMF Foods and Pacific Green," FHL said. Acting group chief executive officer Nouzab Fareed said the ultimate winners of the transaction would be the shareholders of both companies. He said they were content with the investment portfolio of YHL and business would continue as usual. Meanwhile, FHL announced their consolidated group revenue for the first six months of the current financial year had increased by 28 per cent to $122 million compared to the same period of the previous financial year. Mr Naiveli said the results were pleasing as it was achieved under a challenging economic environment. He said they were optimistic that the momentum would be continued in the next six months and that the FHL Group would aim to maintain positive results for the 2013 financial year. This was the group financial performance for the six months ending December 31, 2012. He said consolidated post-tax profit had risen marginally to $7.28m.

Why Celebrate Holi?

Holi or 'Phagwah' is the most colourful festival celebrated by followers of the Vedic Religion. It is celebrated as harvest festival as well as welcomefestival for the spring season in India. HOLI - MARCH 27TH The festival of Holi can be regarded as a celebration of the Colors of Unity & Brotherhood - an opportunity to forget all differences and indulge in unadulterated fun. It has traditionally been celebrated in high spirit without any distinction of cast, creed, color, race, status or sex. It is one occasion when sprinkling colored powder ('gulal') or colored water on each other breaks all barriers of discrimination so that everyone looks the same and universal brotherhood is reaffirmed. This is one simple reason to participate in this colorful festival. What is 'Phagwah'? 'Phagwah' is derived from the name of the Hindu month 'Phalgun', because it is on the full moon in the month of Phalgun that Holi is celebrated. The month of Phalgun ushers India in Spring when seeds sprout, flowers bloom and the country rises from winter's slumber. Meaning of 'Holi' 'Holi' comes from the word 'hola', meaning to offer oblation or prayer to the Almighty as Thanksgiving for good harvest. Holi is celebrated every year to remind people that those who love God shall be saved and they who torture the devotee of God shall be reduced to ashes a la the mythical character Holika. The Legend of Holika Holi is also associated with the Puranic story of Holika, the sister of demonking Hiranyakashipu. The demon-king punished his son, Prahlad in a variety of ways to denounce Lord Narayana. He failed in all his attempts. Finally, he asked his sister Holika to take Prahlad in her lap and enter a blazing fire. Holika had a boon to remain unburned even inside fire. Holika did her brother's bidding. However, Holika's boon ended by this act of supreme sin against the Lord's devotee and was burnt to ashes. But Prahlad came out unharmed. The Krishna Connection Holi is also associated with the Divine Dance known as Raaslila staged by Lord Krishna for the benefit of his devotees of Vrindavan commonly known as Gopis.

Former Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has called on the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) and the Commonwealth to include Fiji back into its forum. Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth and PIFS back in 2009 after it did not bow to demands to have elections in 2010. Somare said PIFS and the Commonwealth need to show patience, compassion and understanding on Fiji and not exclude its membership. UK Tourist Jumps From Agra Balcony 'After Massage Offer'

A British woman has been injured after jumping from a hotel balcony to escape from alleged harassment in Agra, India, local police say. The woman, in her 30s, told police she asked for a wake-up call at 04:00 but when the hotel owner knocked on her door then, he offered her a massage. She told police he would not leave so she locked the door and jumped from her balcony to the level below, injuring her leg, before fleeing the hotel. Police have arrested the hotel owner. They said he was still in custody and would be charged with sexual harassment in a local magistrates' court. A spokesman for the British High Commission in India said UK consular officials in Delhi have spoken to the woman and to the local police. A consular team went to Agra to provide assistance to the woman, he added. The city is home to the Taj Mahal. The senior superintendent of police in Agra, Subhah Chandra Dubey, said the woman's injury to her leg ligament had been treated, and she had been moved to another hotel. She also had two women constables

According to Supt Dubey, the hotel owner claims he had gone to wake the woman up because the hotel staff had tried ringing her on the intercom and when she did not respond, he went to her room. The Foreign Office recently updated its advice for women visiting India, saying they should use caution and avoid travelling alone on public transport, or in taxis or auto-rickshaws, especially at night. It added that reported cases of sexual assault against women and young girls were increasing and recent sexual attacks against female visitors in tourist areas and cities show that foreign women were also at risk. Following an alleged gang rape of a Swiss tourist in Madhya Pradesh state last week, police arrested six people. The woman was attacked with her husband as they camped in woodland near a village in Datia district. The arrests came as India's politicians prepared to debate a new law against rape, after the outcry over the fatal assault on a female Delhi student last year.

Six men have appeared in court over the gang-rape and robbery of a Swiss woman holidaying in India. The 39-year-old woman and her husband were attacked on Friday, during a cycling trip through Datia district in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. Datia district deputy police Chief RS Prajapati said the accused men appeared before a local magistrate and remain in custody. "The magistrate sent the accused on a one-day police remand," he said. "These men will be now further questioned." Five of the suspects, all farmers in their twenties, were paraded in front of television cameras in Madhya Pradesh late on Sunday. Police said on Monday that the men had confessed to the gang-rape. Datia police officer ML Dhody said only four of the men will be charged with gang-rape, which carries a

minimum sentence of 10 years. All the men face robbery charges as police say the group stole a laptop, a mobile phone and $185 from the victim and her husband, who was tied up before the sexual assault. The incident comes three months after the fatal gang-rape of a 23-yearold physiotherapy student on a bus in Delhi sparked nationwide outrage. The suspects allegedly saw the Swiss couple pitching their tent on Friday night in a remote forested area in Datia and attacked them. After being treated in a local hospital, the couple is now in the capital recovering and has pledged to stay to help police identify the rapists. The Swiss embassy released a statement on Monday saying the pair has will remain in India for the moment and "expressed their readiness to fully cooperate in the ongoing investigation and identification process."

Patient Killed By Gang In Hospital

Seven men of a gang murdered a man admitted to Government General Hospital late on Wednesday night, terrifying other patients and staff in the hospital. The gang members entered the hospital with concealed weapons an hour before they set upon 41-year-old Prakash, a DMDK area secretary in RK Nagar, as he lay on his bed in ward 134 on the third floor of the hospital's Tower-1 block. Their faces concealed with handkerchiefs, the assailants pulled out knives and cleavers and attacked Prakash in front of his son at 10.40pm. Witnesses said Dinesh, 15, was screaming for help as the gang attacked his father and patients and caregivers either attempted to hide or ran for their lives. Doctors treated Prakash, admitted to the hospital on March 1 with a spinal cord problem, but he was grievously injured in the attack and died at 12.10am. The gang escaped from the hospital but police apprehended them within three hours of the crime. An investigating officer said the gang killed Prakash, a resident of Amaniamman Koil Garden, to avenge last year's murder of rowdy 'Pallu' Suresh. Prakash killed Suresh because he suspected that he was in a relationship with his wife, Thangamalar. Pallu Suresh's father-in-law had vowed to take revenge on Prakash. Police arrested Nagaraj, 34, of Durga Nagar, Jothi alias Jothilingam, 50, and Shanmugam, 23, of Navalar Nagar, Suresh alias Pattu Suresh, 28, Mohan alias Thupakki Mohan, 26, and Abdul Salam, 23, of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and Kumar, 28, of Nethaji Nagar. Investigating officers have charged them with the murder of Prakash. Prakash had been linked to four murders and was involved in six attempts to murder and four other cases, the officer said. Prakash's son had decided to spend the night in the hospital with his father. He was in a state of shock after the murder. "I ran out and alerted some doctors and searched for policemen. But no one came to my father's rescue," Dinesh said. "They came in with their faces covered, surrounded his bed and attacked him till he fell unconscious," said 70-yearold Chellappan, an asthma patient, who witnessed the murder. Shantha, 60, whose son has been admitted to the hospital, said she covered herself and her son under a bedsheet when the gang members pulled out their weapons. Hospital officials moved patients to Ward 124 soon after the attack and locked up Ward 134.

Chad Wolfe, 31, from Pennsylvania, flew with Delta Airlines from Pittsburgh to Tampa last Thursday, arriving shortly before midnight. He was travelling with his girlfriend of ten years, Jessica. Investigators say Wolfe entered an elevator on the third floor of the main terminal at Tampa International Airport soon after midnight Friday and rode to the seventh floor and short-term parking garage. His carry-on bag was later found on the seventh floor. Airport police say Wolfe pried the elevator doors open and fell to his death, but his father Garland has said he finds that hard to believe, given his sons slight frame.

Wolfes girlfriend has said he had a drink and a Xanax in order to cope with flying. She claims she told him to wait on the main concourse while she claimed their baggage and reported him missing to police when she could not find him. Around 3am, airport maintenance workers reported a lift adjacent to the one caught by Wolfe had stopped working. Wolfes body was discovered by maintenance workers around 10am Friday. The medical examiner has taken possession of Wolfe's body and is working to determine a cause of death.

Auckland has been stuck by two earthquakes, but there are no reports of injuries or damage. GeoNet New Zealand says a medium magnitude-3.9 quake struck just after 4:00pm local time last Sunday. It followed a light magnitude-3.1 quake five minutes earlier. Both tremors were shallow, recorded at a depth of between four and six kilometers, and were centered 15 kilometers north-east of Auckland. Earthquake activity is rare in Auckland.

Auckland Shaken By Rare Earthquakes

GeoNet says the last time an earthquake affected Auckland was in 2007. The organisation ruled out that the earthquakes were caused by volcanic activity. "Our Wairakei-based duty volcanologist does not see any evidence from the characteristics of the seismic waves that they are related to volcanic activity," GeoNet said in a statement on its website. "Nor are the earthquakes large enough to generate a tsunami."

People-Smuggling Operation Cracked In Indonesia

Indonesia's people-smuggling task force has cracked an operation that was preparing to send 80 asylum seekers to Australia. The East Java people-smuggling task force says a Palestinian man, known as Hussein, has been arrested. Among the would be passengers were 20 children and 11 women, but most were set free because they had valid Indonesian visas. Smuggling taskforce spokesman Wiji Suwartini says Hussein is in his 30s and married to an Indonesian woman. He was arrested in the coastal east Java town of Tuban and taken to Surabaya, where authorities are awaiting the help of a translator so they can interrogate him about the operation. It is understood his customers were from Iran and Iraq and were preparing to head to Australia by boat.

Tallest Building In Southern Hemisphere Approved

Melbourne's Southbank area. Melbourne City Council had opposed the project due to fears it would cast a shadow over the Shrine of Remembrance. But the Planning Minister, Matthew Guy, says most of council's concerns have been addressed and the shrine trustees support the project. "There is absolutely no way we would have brought forward any project where the shrine trustees were concerned," he said. "They've told us that they don't object to the proposal. "That, plus advice from the City of Melbourne, gives the Government a view that we should green-light the proposal." Architect Nonda Katsalidis, of Fender Katsalidis Architects says the building, Australia 108, takes its inspiration from the Australian flag. "I think it's going to be spectacular," he told the reporter. "The hotel at the top is designed as a starburst. We took the inspiration from the stars on the Australian flag." A BOWL bought at a $3 sale has turned into a massive windfall for a lucky bargain hunter: the Chinese bowl sold for $2.15million at an auction at Sotheby's. The small pottery bowl, finely crafted with an ivory glaze, turned out to be a thousand year old Ding bowl, dating from the Song dynasty, which ruled China from 960 to 1279. The only other similar bowl from the period known to exist has been on display at the British Museum for more than 60 years. After picking it up for a few dollars down the road in 2007, the buyer displayed it the living room. More recently, they became curious about its value and brought it to experts for an appraisal. Sotheby's had estimated the bowl would sell for between $US200,000 and $US300,000. But four bidders battled over the rare find, and it ultimately sold to renowned London art dealer Giuseppe Eshenazi for $US2.225 million.

The Victorian Government has given the go-ahead for plans for the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. The 388-metre high, 108-storey hotel and apartment building is planned for

American Prison Guard Shot Finger Trying To Remove Ring

An American prison guard has been charged with shooting his own finger in a drunken attempt to remove his wedding ring during an argument with his wife at their Pennsylvania home, police said. A criminal complaint said Bradford police were called just before 9 p.m. March 2 (US time) and were met by Alfredo Malespini III, 31, who told officers he was "trying to get rid of his wedding ring" and decided to "shoot it off." The gunshot badly mangled Malespini's finger, but didn't remove the ring, police said. At the time of the shooting in Bradford, which is near the New York border about 130 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, Malespini was employed as a lieutenant at the Federal Correctional InstitutionMcKean, a medium security prison a few miles away. Vicky Moser, the executive assistant at the prison, said she could confirm only that Malespini remains employed as a lieutenant at the prison, but could not comment as to whether he's been suspended or has otherwise taken leave. Bradford police Lt. Steve Caskey told The Associated Press that he wasn't sure of Malespini's employment status, but "as far as we know, he is still seeking treatment in Erie." Malespini was taken to UPMC Hamot hospital where he was treated for the gunshot wound and also for mental or emotional issues, Caskey said. Police have been called to the Malespini residence a "couple times" previously for domestic disputes, but Caskey said he doesn't believe Malespini had ever been charged with a crime before. On the day of the shooting, Malespini "had been drinking quite heavily throughout the day and he and his wife had been arguing throughout the day about an affair he had had several months ago," Caskey said. Malespini has been charged with disorderly conduct and was cited for firing a weapon within city limits but also is charged with reckless endangerment, a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison. That's because the bullet Malespini fired could have endangered someone else, Caskey said. "He was out on his back deck, he was outside...the bullet could have been fired in a direct line with neighbor's houses," Caskey said. Nobody else was hurt in the shooting, and Malespini was neither armed nor confrontational when police arrived. "The weapon was still there, but it was not in his possession. It was lying on the kitchen counter," Caskey said. "There were never any threats to any officers." Online court records don't list an attorney for Malespini, who is scheduled to be arraigned March 26.

In a rare gesture signifying communal harmony, a Scotland church has become the first in UK to share its building with Muslims, who pray five times a day there. St John's Episcopal Church in Aberdeen, Scotland, now has hundreds of Muslims praying five times a day in their building as the neighbouring mosque was so small that they were forced to worship outside. Sections of the main hall have been handed over by Indian-origin priest Isaac Poobalan to Chief Imam Ahmed Megharbi and his congregation and at busy times they even use the main chapel to pray. Although there have been cases of Christians allowing Muslims to pray in their Churches in parts of America, church chiefs believe it is a first for UK. Poobalan, 50, said being surrounded by Islam while growing up in India helped break down the divide for worshippers of two religions praying together in Aberdeen. "Praying is never wrong. My job is to encourage people to pray. The mosque was so full at times, there would be

people outside in the wind and rain praying," Poobalan was quoted by Scotland's STV as saying. "I knew I couldn't just let this happen because I would be abandoning what the Bible teaches us about how we should treat our neighbours," he said. "When I spoke to the people at the church about the situation, someone actually said to me this was not our problem, but I had seen it with my own eyes, so it was a problem," he added. When I spoke to the imam there was some hesitation on their part too, because this has never been done before. But they took us up on the offer and it has been a positive relationship," Poobalan said. Chief Imam Ahmed Megharbi said, "What happens here is special and there should be no problem repeating this across the country. The relationship is friendly and respectful." "It would be good to think we can change the world. Most of us most of the time feel we can't so don't bother. But sometimes, someone has a vision we can do something of global significance on a local scale," he said.

A bill containing harsher punishments for rapists, including the death penalty, has been passed by India's lower house of parliament. It comes after the fatal gang rape of a student in Delhi in December sparked demands for tougher laws. Last month, the government introduced the new rape laws in an ordinance. After a seven-hour debate on Tuesday, members of the lower house gave their assent to the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill. It now passes to the upper house. The legislation contains new penalties for stalking, groping, voyeurism and acid attacks. However, Indian newspapers reported a low turn-out for Tuesday's vote, even though various parties had pledged their commitment to making the provisions in the bill become law. The lower house, or Lok Sabha, was mostly empty when the vote took place, reports said, with Congress President Sonia Gandhi, her son and party VicePresident Rahul Gandhi - as well as other senior ministers - prominent among the absentees. One well-known MP - Janata Dal (United) leader Sharad Yadav voted against the bill, arguing that criminalising stalking and voyeurism could result in more false cases being

filed against men. The proposed new law will retain the age of consent for sex at 18 years. The age of consent had been 16 years for three decades before the government raised it in its ordinance in February. The government had proposed bringing it down to 16 again, amid fears that a higher age of consent would be "misused" by parents who disapproved of their daughters' consensual relationships with boys. Some political parties had protested against a return to the lower age limit. The new laws also prescribe the death penalty - which is carried out very rarely in India - in cases of rape that cause death or leave the victim in a vegetative state. "[The] time has come to send out a loud, clear and deterrent signal that the society will not tolerate such errant behaviour," Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said, emphasising that the bill was being introduced to plug loopholes in the law. Under the changes, the minimum sentence for gang rape, rape of a minor, rape by policemen or a person in authority will be doubled to 20 years and can be extended to life without parole. Under the existing laws, a rapist faces a term of seven to 10 years.

A milkman on an early morning delivery run has become a volunteer firefighter and put out a fire in innerBrisbane. Emergency Services received a triple-0 call from milkman Shane Fuller who came across a fire in a planter box on the corner of Little Edward and Leichhardt streets at Spring Hill just before 5:00am (AEST). Mr Fuller says he smelt smoke on his morning rounds while driving down Leichhardt Street. He says the fire planter box was well alight when he drove by. "The flames were about half-a-meter high - some of the mulch and palms were starting to burn," he said. "I didn't have any water so I just grabbed some bottles of milk and just drenched it. "It had only just taken off by the look of it but there were flames there, so just still four liters is enough if you get it in

the right spot, I suppose. "There are a couple of cafes that are short of [milk] this morning, so the boss is going to have to pay for that one." Mr Fuller says it is the first time he has put out a fire with milk. "I just jumped in and made sure it couldn't get any worse," he said. "Normally I use water, but it had to be milk today, that's all I had. "It's not something I ever thought I would do - putting a fire out with milk. "Didn't really cost me too much time I waited around to make sure it didn't spark off again." He says he called emergency services after he put out the fire. "I figured I could put it out and I called triple-0 about five minutes later," he said. "I just gave them a call in case they wanted to go up and give it a proper drenching to make sure.

A neurosurgeon in Australia found to have operated on the wrong part of a patient's brain using inappropriate instruments has been denied a chance to appeal the ruling against him. Retired neurosurgeon Raymond Leonard George Newcombe was found to have failed three patients under his care in the 1990s and early 2000s by the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal last year. Dr Newcombe was found to have acted incompetently in treating one of those patients, described as patient L. The Tribunal found he had used inappropriate instruments, and had not realised he was, or could be, operating on the wrong part of the patient L's brain. Dr Newcombe was also found to have failed to provide the patient with adequate care after the operation. Lawyers for Dr Newcombe missed the 28 day cut off to appeal the decision. But they sought leave to appeal after the cutoff date, citing lengthy delays between the hearing in September 2009 and the decision in June 2012. The reasons for the decision were not published until October 2, and were not sent to Dr Newcombe's lawyers until October 4. Dr Newcombe's lawyers said those

delays meant their client was not afforded procedural fairness. They argued the delays had also impaired the ability of the Tribunal to assess the allegations and the evidence against the neurosurgeon. Dr Newcombe's lawyers said the Tribunal had made errors in the findings of incompetence relating to patient L, including an error about what instrument was used in surgery But lawyers for the respondent, the ACT Medical Board of the Medical Board of Australia, argued the delays were not grounds for an appeal to be allowed after the cut-off date. "Whilst my learned friend may well be right in saying that there are cases when delay will poison the administration of justice by the inability to properly grapple with the case, with the facts and principles at hand, this is not one of those cases," Counsel for the respondent said. In an order published on Wednesday, the Tribunal found that the delays had not denied procedural fairness and had not impaired the ability to assess the evidence and the allegations against Dr Newcombe. The application to appeal after the cut off was dismissed.

A man froze to death in Russia's Pskov region, having been put in a morgue freezer alive after the staff confused his body with another corpse, officials said. Doctors discovered a 57-year-old man in his apartment in February and said he had to be taken to the morgue after pronouncing him dead, where he was put in a freezer. However, a forensic investigation showed that the man was still alive when he arrived at the morgue.

Man Dies In Morgue Freezer After Staff Confused His Body With Another Corpse

The man was brought to the morgue and left there by his relatives when no medical personnel were present, the Pskov administration said. This led the morgue personnel to later confuse two bodies and put the man in the freezer. "It's inadmissible when bodies are brought to the morgue, there are no doctors around and relatives have to take the keys and carry the bodies inside themselves," Pskov governor Andrei Turchak said.

A woman who cut off a man's penis after luring him to her home where he was drugged and beaten to death has lost an appeal against her sentence. Dianna Gay Wright was jailed for nine years last September for her role in the fatal attack on Noel Clark. She had pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court in Brisbane to manslaughter and interfering with a corpse. During the hearing the court heard Wright lured Clark to her Maryborough house at the request of another man, who believed the intended victim had ''stolen his woman''. Once at the house the jilted lover and a friend sprayed Clark's face with ether and beat him to death with a baseball

bat. One of the men then ordered Wright, who was high on morphine, to cut off Clark's penis because he was, according to them, a rapist or a pedophile. They then disposed of Clark's body, which has never been found. Wright took her case to the Court of Appeal in Brisbane, where her lawyer argued the sentence was excessive and failed to take into account her guilty plea and her co-operation with authorities. In a written judgment published on Wednesday, the Court of Appeal dismissed the application, ruling the sentence was in line with Wright's "high order" of criminality.

Manulife Pulls Low-Rate Mortgage After Canada Government Pressure

Manulife Financial said on Tuesday it is reversing a decision to cut Canadian mortgage rates following pressure from Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, who has raised concerns about record high consumer debt levels. Manulife, which is Canada's largest insurer but also offers banking services such as mortgages, said this week it would offer five-year loans at 2.89 percent, down from its previous 3.09 percent and lower than the posted rates of any of Canada's top five banks. But the company said on Tuesday it is pulling the low-rate loans. "After consulting with the Department of Finance, Manulife Bank has withdrawn the promotional campaign and reverted to our previous posted rate," Manulife spokesman Graeme Harris said in an emailed statement. Canada's Conservative government has tightened mortgage lending rules several times in an effort to cool higherrisk lending and reduce the chances of a U.S.-style housing market crash. Earlier this month, Flaherty warned the country's banks not to engage in the kind of risky lending that led to the U.S. housing crisis, after Bank of Montreal cut a popular mortgage rate to a near-record low. "The minister felt that it was intolerable that Manulife would make this change and he instructed one of his staff to call up and pass along the message that it would not be tolerated," said a spokesman in Flaherty's office. Canadian housing sales have slowed following the last round of mortgage rule changes in July.

'Canadian Psycho' Collapses At Pre-Trial

But prices have remained high as low interest rates have allowed lenders to offer mortgages at historically low levels. At the same time, Canadian household debt-to-income levels are at a record high. "(Flaherty) has made it very clear that he is concerned about extremely low interest rates, and he wants to make sure that the downward trend in housing (activity) continues at a rate that is reasonable," said Benjamin Tal, senior economist at CIBC World Markets. While posted rates are the lowest widely advertised by lenders, borrowers can often negotiate slightly lower rates either through the banks or through brokers. The moves to curb consumer lending, combined with the tight competition on rates, has pinched revenue growth at Canada's banks. This has put pressure on them to grow market share by keep rates low. Thomas Mulcair, leader of the New Democratic Party, the biggest opposition party, and other opposition party leaders criticized Flaherty's intervention, saying that Manulife was simply responding to market pressures. "This idea that you use the office of a minister to dictate outside of law, outside of regulations, is absolutely unacceptable in a free and democratic society." The mortgage rate cuts come just ahead of the typically busy spring real estate buying season, when warmer weather prompts sellers to list houses they had been holding off the market during the winter months.

A CANADIAN former porn actor accused of murdering and dismembering a Chinese man collapsed in court while evidence was presented against him, witnesses have told the reporter. Luka Rocco Magnotta, 30, asked for a break in the preliminary hearing, during in which a judge must decide if there is enough evidence for a trial, then stood up and collapsed on the courtroom floor. His lawyer Luc Leclair said that Magnotta was "not feeling well" and was not able to continue. Proceedings were adjourned when Magnotta was expected to return after resting, he added. The so-called "Canadian Psycho" has pleaded not guilty to first degree murder and other charges, including committing indignities to a body and harassing Canadian Prime Minister

Stephen Harper. Police have said the man, who had worked as a gay porn actor and sex worker, used an ice pick to stab his 33-year-old victim before carving up his body, sexually abusing the corpse, filming the act and posting the video online. Days after the killing, police discovered the victim's torso in a suitcase by the rubbish outside an apartment along a busy highway in Montreal. His severed hands and feet were sent through the mail to federal political parties in Ottawa and to two schools in Vancouver. The head was found in a Montreal park months later. The media dubbed Magnotta the "Canadian Psycho" after it was discovered the soundtrack from the movie "American Psycho" was playing in the background of a video of the alleged murder posted online.

Transit police in Metro Vancouver say two teenage girls were arrested late Monday night for allegedly attacking people with a knife on and around the SkyTrain transit line. Const. Anne Drennan said the incident began around 11:30 p.m. PT across the street from the Gateway SkyTrain station in Surrey, when the two girls, aged 14 and 15, appeared to be looking for a fight. One of the girls allegedly slashed a woman on the arm with a knife. They then boarded the SkyTrain and allegedly confronted another woman and slashed one of the seats. The terrified woman then got off the train at New Westminster's Columbia Station where she was allegedly chased by the girls and punched in the face. Then at Joyce Station the girls allegedly attacked a man at random. After he

used a pizza box to defend himself, the girls fled the area. They were arrested shortly afterwards by transit police. Drennan said at least two people were stabbed with a 20-centimetre steak knife during the incidents, but no one received serious injuries. "The woman who was slashed on the arm received a cut several inches long which required stitches. The man who was holding the pizza box, the box was stabbed, but fortunately he wasn't, although he did receive a small cut to his finger. And the woman who was punched received cuts and scrapes to her face," she said. Drennan said transit police are reviewing surveillance footage and have recommended charges of assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. She said the girls are known to police.

Olympic Cauldron Lit To Celebrate New Restaurant

Cactus Club paying $5K to have flame lit for opening of Coal Harbour venue Vancouver's Olympic Cauldron was relit on Thursday evening to celebrate the opening of a new restaurant on top of the Vancouver Convention Centre. The cauldron is located in the Jack Poole Plaza, next to the new 500seat Cactus Club restaurant, which is paying more than $5,000 to have it lit for the restaurant's opening night. The cauldron is managed by the Vancouver Convention Centre which is run by the B.C. Pavilion Corporation, the crown corporation also responsible for running BC Place. A spokeperson for the convention centre released a statement saying they consider "requests to light the cauldron in conjunction with events at our facility." "The minimum charge is $5,000 for up to four hours, calculated from the time the cauldron is lit until it is extinguished. An administrative fee of 5 per cent is also applied. This fee covers all cauldron-related expenses." "In this case, Cactus Club Restaurants are covering the costs associated with the lighting to celebrate the opening of their restaurant on the Jack Poole Plaza." The four-armed glass and steel cauldron was built to reflect the 2010 Games theme of fire on ice and was first lit during opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancoouver by hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. A chainlink fence designed to keep visitors away generated widespread outrage during the games, prompting the Olympic organizing committee to redesign the security measures. It was built by the Terasen Gas, now called FortisBC, in partnership with the Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic organizing committees.

Richmond City Council Won't Pursue 'Chinese-Only' Sign Ban

Council says it's up to owners to decide on store signage
The city council in Richmond, B.C., has voted not to follow up on a petition, presented to them on Monday evening, asking for a bylaw that would ban "Chinese-only" signs in the city. A group of Richmond residents collected 1,000 signatures supporting their position that the majority of signs in any one area of the city should have at least one of Canada's official languages English or French. Petitioner Anne Merdinyan spent months taking photos around Richmond to illustrate the prevalence of Chinese-only signs outside local businesses, on restaurant menus and in pamplets and inserts received in the mail. She presented the photos in a slideshow to council. Merdinyan said Chinese-only signs are doing non-Chinese residents a disservice. "We, the new visible minorities, are experiencing exclusion," she said to a city council chamber packed with Richmond residents. "Maybe I want to do business with them," Merdinyan said. "Why I have to be an outsider? What's the reason?" On Monday, Coun. Chak Au suggested the city investigate the issue further. However, every other councillor defeated the proposal, saying it's up to store owners to decide what kind of signage they want, and it's up to shoppers to decide if they want to go elsewhere. Richmond resident Randolf Richardson was at the meeting and said he was happy with council's decision. "There are also requirements in our charter that require certain government departments and the education system to provide English and French language support because those are official languages in that regard," he said. "But that doesn't extend to imposing those languages on people, private citizens or private property. And what I see these shopkeepers doing is exercising their right to freedom of expression." Coun. Derek Dang said non-English signs are actually quite rare a recent count only found three Chinese business signs that had no English. Dang said he's afraid the push against Chinese-only signs may be a case of veiled racism. However, he said he thinks those who support mandatory English signs are in a slim minority. "I don't believe that is a common theme throughout our city, and hopefully it's not around the Lower Mainland either," he said. Dang also said Richmond's small business owners should be able to decide how they want to advertise, even if it hurts their businesses in the end. "If they only want to cater to one group of people, [they] are actually doing a detriment to their own business, and I just think it's foolhardy, quite frankly," he said. According to Statistics Canada, about half of Richmond's population speaks only English at home.

Twenty four people on an Air Canada Express flight from Montreal to Toronto wound up circling over Pearson International Airport, waiting to make an emergency landing Wednesday afternoon after one of the planes engines failed. Emergency ground crews were readied as the twin-engine Dash 8 landed safely after being diverted to Pearson. That airport has much bigger runways, thereby giving more room for an emergency landing, than the smaller Toronto Islands airport where the plane was originally supposed to arrive. The cause of the engine failure wasnt

immediately known late Wednesday, said a spokeswoman for Sky Regional, which operates the Air Canada Express flight AC7515. Word among Air Canada airport check-in clerks during the time of the emergency was that the plane was having hydraulic problems, possibly causing the one of the engine to malfunction. Engine failure is one of the main emergencies that pilots train for. Despite the in-flight scare and diversion to Pearson, the emergency only delayed the flight by a few minutes. Starting in Moncton and after a stopover in Montreal, the flight landed only about 20 minutes later than scheduled.

Harper, Mulcair Accuse Each Other Of Selling Out

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair locked horns in the House of Commons as they accused each other of selling out Canadian jobs and prosperity. Harpers ire was raised over a trip Mulcair took to Washington last week where, in speeches and meetings with U.S. lawmakers, the NDP leader talked down the Keystone XL pipeline. The NDP can oppose Canadian jobs, but on this side we are for Canadians, Harper said during daily question period to the cheers of his caucus. Harper has long described that pipeline, which will take crude from Alberta to refineries in Texas, as a no-brainer because he says it will create tens of thousands of jobs. Mulcair, though, was giving no quarter, accusing Harper of selling out Canadian jobs. His project includes the export of 40,000 Canadian value-added jobs. We will keep standing up for Canada, Mulcair fired back to NDP cheers. Mulcair favours a west-to-east pipeline that would see Alberta crude refined in eastern Canada. If we do not learn how to add value to our natural resources here instead of shipping our jobs to the U.S., we will not get out of the mess they have created. There are 300,000 more unemployed today than when the crisis hit in 2008. That is a fact, Mulcair said. Harper immediately took issue Mulcairs point. We have 950,000 new jobs created since the end of the recession. It is one of the best records in the world and Canadians will never sacrifice that to the extremism and ideology of the NDP.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada is launching an ad campaign Wednesday warning Canadians to protect themselves against marriage fraud. A seven-minute video will be posted on the department website, featuring the real-life stories of three Canadians, in silhouettes, whose foreign spouses left them hung out to dry after coming to Canada. They include an anglophone woman, who met a Cuban man in 2002 while vacationing on the island. The couple married in 2005 and the husband left her on March 24, 2007, shortly after he arrived in Canada with his permanent resident card. There are so many people across Canada that are suffering nowadays for the exact same thing that happened to me, she said. After marriage, everything changed. After she arrived in Canada, I was nothing to her, chimed in another victim, a man wearing a turban. A francophone woman met a guy online and received a marriage proposal after three weeks. He came to Canada and

vanished. My self-esteem took a big blow. I became severely depressed and had suicidal thoughts, said the woman, who also ended up owing the government $30,000 that her sponsored spouse received in welfare. The video, along with three Marriage Fraud: Dont be a victim television commercials, is the focus of the departments fraud prevention month. Last year, the theme was about the risks of hiring fly-by-night unlicensed immigration consultants. I have heard stories from victims across the country that have been left emotionally and financially devastated because of immigration fraud, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said. The best way to protect oneself is to become informed. Under a new law passed last year, sponsored spouses must remain in a marriage for two years before they can acquire permanent resident status or face deportation. They are also banned from sponsoring a new spouse for five years.

Former B.C. government communications director Brian Bonney has resigned a second time, in the wake of the B.C. Liberals' ethnic outreach scandal. Bonney stepped down as the CEO of the Canadian Home Builders' Association of B.C. on Tuesday, less than a month into the job. He left his role as the provinces director of communications shortly before the NDP leaked the Liberal's ethnic outreach plan, and went to work for the association on Feb. 25. The Dyble report into the scandal found Bonney had spent as much as half his time in government working on partisan activities. Premier Christy Clark said the Liberal Party had cut a cheque for $70,000 to repay part of Bonney's salary. He is the fourth person to step down because of the scandal, along with

former Multiculturalism Minister John Yap, the premier's former deputy chief of staff, Kim Haakstad, and government staffer, Mike Lee. Bonney "tendered his resignation in light of the Dyble Report, which he felt compromised his ability to work in the best interests of the residential construction industry," the association said in a statement. The report was released last week by Clark's deputy minister John Dyble. It found a number of serious breaches of the government's code of conduct. The outreach plan, which was leaked to the NDP, laid out the Liberal's preelection strategy for "quick wins" in ethnic communities. It suggested government staffers co-ordinate their activities with the Liberal party to help them woo voters in key ethnic communities. Clark has apologized several times to the province's ethnic communities for the document, and said the

Child Abuse
Child Sexual Abuse
chronic disease is not receiving needed medical treatment (e.g., a child with diabetes is not receiving medication); or A child has a chronic disease that can cause disability or disfigurement if left untreated (e.g., a child with congenital cataracts needs surgery to prevent blindness). In these cases, child protection services agencies may seek a court order for medical treatment to save the childs life or prevent life-threatening injury, disability or disfigurement. Although medical neglect is highly correlated with poverty, there is a distinction between a caregivers inability to provide the needed care based on cultural norms or the lack of financial resources and a caregivers knowing reluctance or refusal to provide care. Children and their families may be in need of services even though the parent may not be intentionally neglectful. When poverty limits a parents resources to adequately provide necessities for the child, services may be offered to help families provide for their children. What Can You Do? If you suspect child neglect is occurring, first report it to the local child protective services agency (often called social services or human services). Professionals who work with children are required by law to report reasonable suspicion of abuse and neglect. Furthermore, citizens who suspect abuse or neglect are required to report it. Reasonable suspicion based on objective evidence, which could be firsthand observation or statements made by a parent or child, is all that is needed to report. Child Physical Abuse What Is Child Physical Abuse? Defined as non-accidental trauma or physical injury caused by punching, beating, kicking, biting, burning or otherwise harming a child, physical abuse is the most visible form of child maltreatment. Many times, physical abuse results from inappropriate or excessive physical discipline. A parent or caretaker in anger may be unaware of the magnitude of force with which he or she strikes the child. Other factors that can contribute to child abuse include parents immaturity, lack of parenting skills, poor childhood experiences and social isolation, as well as frequent crisis situations, drug or alcohol problems and domestic violence.

Emotional/Psychological neglect Verbally assaulting (constant belittling, name calling or threatening); Isolating (preventing the child from having normal social contacts with other children and adults); Terrorizing (threatening the child with extreme punishment or creating a climate of terror by playing on childhood fears); and Corrupting or exploiting (encouraging the child to engage in destructive, illegal or antisocial behavior). A pattern of this parental behavior can lead to the childs poor self-image, alcohol or drug abuse, destructive behavior and even suicide. Severe neglect of an infants need for stimulation and nurturance can result in the infant failing to thrive and even infant death. Emotional neglect is often the most difficult situation to substantiate in a legal context and is often reported secondary to other abuse or neglect concerns. Medical neglect Medical neglect is the failure to provide appropriate health care for a child (although financially able to do so), thus placing the child at risk of being seriously disabled or disfigured or dying. Concern is warranted not only when a parent refuses medical care for a child in an emergency or for an acute illness, but also when a parent ignores medical recommendations for a child with a treatable chronic disease or disability, resulting in frequent hospitalizations or significant deterioration. Even in non-emergency situations, medical neglect can result in poor overall health and compounded medical problems. Parents may refuse medical care for their children for different reasons religious beliefs, fear or anxiety about a medical condition or treatment, or financial issues. Child protective services agencies generally will intervene when: Medical treatment is needed in an acute emergency (e.g., a child needs a blood transfusion to treat shock); A child with a life-threatening

Obese Heart Patients 'Do Better'

Obese cardiac patients are less likely to die early than their normal weight counterparts, say researchers. This is despite them reporting worse health and being less likely to follow lifestyle advice, a study of more than 4,400 patients reported. One explanation is that doctors treat the disease more aggressively, the University College London team said. The British Heart Foundation also said that where people stored fat, not just general obesity, was important. It is not the first time researchers have pointed out this paradox, that being overweight or obese - a risk factor for heart disease in itself - can actually lead to a better prognosis. One theory has been that maybe such patients were fitter, despite their size taking more exercise for example. To see if this was the case, researchers from University College London looked at data from patients who took part in the Health Survey for England or Scottish Health Survey. They found that, as with other studies, patients with cardiovascular disease who were obese or overweight were less likely to die over the next seven years than people of a normal weight who had the condition. In all 31% of patients were obese that is with a body mass index of 30 or more - they reported in Preventive Medicine. Those patients tended to be younger but reported worse health and had more heart risk factors such as raised cholesterol and blood pressure, but were less likely to smoke. The researchers found that those who took part in physical activity at least once a week and did not smoke had a lower risk of death whatever their weight. But obese patients who did not stick to these healthy lifestyle recommendations still had a lower risk of death than normal weight patients who smoked or were inactive.

Study leader Dr Mark Hamer said they were trying to explain why obese heart patients seemed to do better by looking at lifestyle factors, but they found that it was not the case that obese patients were healthier. "We don't yet understand this paradox and we would clearly not advise patients to put on weight. "One of the more sensible explanations may be that when obese patients present to their doctor, they are given more aggressive treatment because they are seen as very high risk," he explained. "We do know, for example with cardiac rehabilitation, that the thing that absolutely works is exercise - that dramatically reduces risk even though you don't necessarily lose weight." Other work by the same researchers has shown that a certain proportion of obese patients have very normal health and are not at increased risk of heart disease. "BMI is quite a poor marker of what's going on," Dr Hamer added. June Davison, a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: "It seems contradictory that one of the risk factors for heart disease may improve survival rates. "The reason for this link remains unclear, but it's possible that those with a higher BMI go to their doctor sooner and may be treated more aggressively. "Also, this study only measured BMI. When looking at health risk it's not only BMI that matters, but where fat is stored. "Carrying excess fat around the middle can produce toxic substances which can increase your health risk."

Sonakshi Seeks Reference From Madhubala, Waheeda In 'Lootera'

Her drama "Lootera" is set in the 1950s and to play her part perfectly, Sonakshi Sinha has taken yesteryears actresses Madhubala and Waheeda Rehman as her reference points. Many feel she resembles Reena Roy, but Sonakshi has reason to think about the two legends of Indian cinema. "I think she (Reena Roy) came after 1950s in the industry. I would think of Madhubalaji, Waheeda Rehmanji, and Suchitra Sen. I can only think of these faces. I am quite excited about the film. I am really looking forward to it, " Sonakhi told reporters at the first look launch of "Lootera" Friday. "The role has been the most difficult till now. It was quite challenging, " she said and added she would do both kinds of roles like "Rowdy Rathore", "Dabangg" and "Lootera" as well." Set in West Bengal, "Lootera" is Vikramaditya Motwane's second directorial venture after much

acclaimed "Udaan". Thanks to his storytelling technique and freshness in the narrative, Motwane became a name to reckon with after the success of "Udaan", which had wowed cinegoers at Cannes fest. But he doesn't feel any pressure. "I do not feel the pressure. I am not bothered. Rather, I am very much proud of the film. I hope people like it. I want everyone to enjoy the film, " he said. "Lootera" is said to be inspired by American author O Henry's famous story "The Last Leaf", but Motwane clarified saying, "We have been inspired by the book, but we haven't adapted it. We have made changes in it. It is a fresh film." For the male lead, Motwane has cast Ranveer Singh. Jointly produced by Phantom Films and Balaji Motion Pictures, "Lootera" is slated for a July 5 release.

If we get to hear Lata Mangeshkar's evocative Lag ja gale se in the stunning sequel to Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster it comes with a heavy price. And film producers are poised for a battle with the music company that owns the copyrights of over 95 percent of the vintage film songs. Getting copyrights of classic film songs for peanuts is a thing of the past. Nowadays producers have to shell out small and large fortunes to get the song of their choice from. Recently Apoorva Lakhia abandoned plans to use the celebrated Manna Dey qawwalli Yaari hai imaan mera filmed on Pran from the original Zanjeer for the remake and instead decided to record a fresh number to be shot on Sanjay Dutt who takes over Pran's number. The reason given for this was the exorbitant price that the music company Saregama-HMV expected in return for the song's copyright. Tigmanshu Dhulia was at the receivingend of a jolting reminder of how forbidding the cost for song copyrights

Little did I know getting the rights would cause a major dent in our film's budget. ` Tiganshu says he had no idea getting the song's rights would prove so costly. `We kept shooting and I used the song at several places. I was assured we could get the rights for a 6-7 lakh rupees. Finally we were asked to cough up Rs 30 lakhs. We had no choice but to pay up since I had already shot the song on Mahie Gill. ` Tigmanshu had plans of using another vintage song the Qawwalli Bade beshram aashiq hain from the 1971 film Putlibai which he hastily abandoned. `After Lag ja gale se I wanted to use some lines from that Qawwalli which talks of how a woman was created. But they again asked for Rs 30 lakhs for this song as well. I had to hastily abandon the idea. ` Adarsh Gupta, Business Head of Saregama he said, `Actually we are very clear on the copyright issue regarding our song repertoire. Any producer can

buy our songs and use them as and how they desire in their films. But they cannot incorporate our songs in any form in the soundtrack for other music companies. So if they want to include our songs in their cds then the music rights have to be sold to us. We do not insist on buying the music soundtrack if our songs are used only in the film and not in the soundtrack album. `

all grown up from her funny torn on Little Miss Sunshine. Little fun is on display here as the police are sent on a manhunt to trap a madman, played by Canadian Michael Eklund. Tension abounds in The Call, an enjoyable thriller made al the more palatable performance of Morris Chestnut. Creepy and scary despite a few hard to believe moments The Call succeeds as a bonafide suspense laden story thanks to it's realistic tone and gutsy portrayal by Halle Berry as a determined 911 operator out to do the the right thing and make a difference.

Gul Awaits Release Of Punjabi Film 'Sarsa'

After his first production bit the dust, Sanjay Dutt has roped in a documentary filmmaker to helm his next project. Looks like try, try until you succeed is Sanjay Dutt's motto when it comes to working on the future of his production house. Word is that after the debacle of his debut production directed by David Dhawan, Sanju has signed noted documentary filmmaker Sejal Shah to direct the production house's next project. A source close to the project says, `The film has been titled Hasmukh and is written by Bhavani Iyer, who has penned films like Black and Guzaarish.` Sejal's documentary work Joginis Servants of God was screened at the Locarno Film Festival. It also won him an award at the Festival Du Film Sur Les Droits Humains, the first international film festival on human rights in Geneva.

The GMC Sierra 1500 is virtually identical to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and yet there's something that keeps a certain kind of shopper coming back for the GMC version of this fullsize pickup. Whether it's the allure of the GMC badge, the working-man imagery at GMC's roots, or its subtle trim differences, some people simply prefer the Sierra. Along with the Silverado, the Sierra takes on the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 in vying for truck traditionalists. Although last redesigned in 2007and without any serious design changed since thenthe Sierra is still one of the better choices for truck buyers of all kinds, from commercial users to personal-luxury seekers, thanks to a wide variety in powertrains, pleasant handling, and titanic towing capacity. The Sierra's conservative, tasteful look totally hinges on the power of the rectangle. The grille says it all: it's a big, squared-off piece, with big, squared-off "GMC" lettering. It's simple, straightforward, and almost stark--like the rest of the truck until you get inside one of the more luxurious versions, like the Denali and its plush upholstery, soft-touch plastics, and woodgrain trim.

2013 GMC Sierra 1500

Whether you're happy with the Sierraand whether it's competitive with the latest from Ford and Ram (Dodge)depends on which engine you select. The basic workhorse engine is a 195-horsepower, 4.3-liter V-6, meant mostly for fleets and very tight budgets; and it's underwhelming with its four-speed automatic transmission. There's a small-block, flex-fuel, 302-hp 4.8-liter V-8 on some low-mid trims, but it also comes with the four-speed and it's definitely worth moving up a notch to the flex-fuel 5.3-liter V-8 that's the most common Sierra powerplant. That engine has 315 hp and cylinder deactivation that helps mitigate the Sierra's thirst for gas--and it's the basis for the Sierra XFE, the most efficient, non-hybrid Sierra you can buy. Top Denali models include a 6.2-liter, 403hp, flex-fuel V-8 that's shared with the Cadillac Escalade; unfortunately the Escalade's thirst is also shared. Four-wheel drive available on every body style and with every drivetrain, though the system on Denali models technically is on-demand "Autotrac" all-wheel drive. Like the Silverado, the Sierra has up to 10,700 pounds of towing capacity. Also for 2013, all Sierra models with the six-speed automatic transmission get a new grade braking feature to enhance stability when towing downhill. The slow-selling Sierra Hybrid is often overlooked and deserves special mention. With its complex, two-mode hybrid drivetraina combination of batteries, motors and a 6.0-liter V-8 with cylinder deactivationit nets the equivalent of 332 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque. In return you get strong accelerationclose to the output found in the 5.3-liter V-8--but with eerily smooth, quiet acceleration. The Hybrid can run on battery power alone up to about 25 mph. Across the lineup, the Sierra steers and handles well for such a large truck which at least in part helps you forget that you're driving such a large truck. The only exception is the Hybrid, which has electric power steering that tends to give it a more numb, detached feel. Ride quality is mostly smooth and well-sorted, except on the off-road packages; hefty curb weight and long wheelbases help a lot here. The Sierra is comfortable inside, but its seats could be a lot better. Although there are a few configurations, front seats are wide and flat, and they could use more lateral support. Meanwhile the back seats in Crew Cabs tend to be underpadded, with a seatback that's tilted too far upright. Five-seat trucks have a wide center console with astounding storage capacity, while six-passenger versions get a simpler dash and a front bench seat. Both versions have clear displays and big controls, meant to be operated with workgloved hands. Regular-cab versions have a little storage space behind the front seats, and Extended Cabs have just enough space behind rear-hinged access doors for a toolbox and work gear. Bed lengths vary by model. Hybrids and Crew Cabs have a 5'8" bed; a 6'6" bed can be selected on any style except the Hybrid, as can an 8' bed. From stripped-down Work trucks to plush Denali models, the 2013 Sierra offers a wide range of equipment to cover different needs and budgets. Base trucks get vinyl seats and manual door locks, while Denali models have leather ventilated seats, hard-drive navigation systems, Bluetooth and DVD entertainment systems. Hybrids are equipped at the luxury end of the spectrum, and they and Denali versions can easily blow by the $50,000 mark.

Driving Through Snowstorms more clearly before moving on. and Blizzards. Avoid driving during If you become stuck on ice or snow,
snowstorms and blizzards unless there is no way to avoid doing so. When it does become necessary, remember that you will not be able to see the road ahead as clearly as you would under normal conditions. Therefore, it is very important to drive more slowly and be prepared to stop suddenly. You should be able to stop within the distance lit up by your headlights. Turn your headlights on low beam. Do not switch to high beam. This will create dangerous glare from the reflection of your lights on the blinding snow. If you become weary of straining your eyes to see through the haze or it becomes impossible to do so, pull your vehicle off the road carefully and stop. Wait until you can see the road ahead

Driving In Bad Road And Weather Conditions

do not panic. Try to free your vehicle by "rocking" it back and forth. Keep the front wheels straight and slowly drive forward and backward as far as possible without spinning the tires. Accelerate gently when the tires grip, then shift to neutral and coast as far as possible in one direction, then apply the brake and repeat this operation in the opposite direction. Do not allow the wheels to spin as that will merely dig deeper and create ice. If you become snowbound during a heavy snowstorm or blizzard, there are a few important survival tips of which you should be aware. If you are prepared and follow these rules, your chances of surviving and being rescued will be much greater. Stay with your vehicle. Most deaths occur when people get out of the car, get lost, and freeze to death. Turn on your hazard warning lights. Attach a red flag to your radio antenna. Set out flags and flares if possible. Bring all clothing, blankets, and other survival supplies into the car. Leave the engine and heater on until the vehicle is reasonably warm, then shut it off. When the vehicle becomes too cold, turn the engine back on. Repeat this process as long as the fuel holds out, or until you are rescued, whichever comes first. It is recommended that you run the vehicle for about ten minutes every hour to charge

the battery and warm the interior. Make sure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow and debris. Even if it is extremely cold, you should leave at least one window partially open to let in fresh air. There is a great danger that you will get carbon monoxide poisoning from sitting in an idling car without ventilation of some sort. Keep moving. Exercise as much as possible. Stay awake unless accompanied by others. At least one person should be awake at all times. Don't panic. Keep your spirits up, and those of others in the car as well. This will make the waiting much easier. Continued Next Week

Sunglasses For Your Face Shape

Finding the right sunglasses can be the most excruciating thing. You can try hundreds of sunglasses and still youre not sure if thats the right pair! But dont worry, here are some tips on how to choose the perfect shades for your face shape. If your face is square, choose a pair that has a soft oval shape. This will soften the angles of a square face. Make sure to pick rimless glasses as well, those look best on you. If your face is long and narrow, choose round or square frames with big lenses. Because the lenses are so big, it will cut out part of your face and make it seem shorter and not so narrow. If your face is round, stick to frames that are as wide or even wider than the widest part of your face. This will give your face a longer shape. If youre heart shaped, pick shades with sides that attach in the middle of the lenses. Just keep in mind that square sunglasses are most flattering for your face shape.

Hair

- Rosewater comes with natural conditioning and moisturising properties, making it a part of your hair care routine. Add a few drops of rosewater with your shampoo. It will also give a long-lasting fragrance to your hair. - It also aids hair growth. After

- Mildly soak cotton swabs in rosewater and place it over your eyes for a soothing, cooling and relaxing effect. - Get instant relief from burning, red or inflammatory eyes by pouring two to three drops of rosewater in each eye and closing it for a few minutes. You can also cleanse your eyes every night to wade off any eye infection. Rosewater is also one of the ingredients used in Ayurvedic medicine. - Banish those dark circles by smearing rosewater under the eyes. - To treat those tired and droopy eyes, mix sandalwood with rosewater, apply on the eye lids and wash it off with cold water after 15 minutes.

A young Greek soccer player has been banned from the national team for life after making a Nazi salute during a league game. The 20-year-old former captain of Greece's under-19 side, Giorgos Katidis, made the gesture as he celebrated his winning goal in AEK Athens's 2-1 Super League victory over lowly Veria. The midfielder apologised and asked to be dropped from AEK's first team. "I would like to confess that I am totally unacceptable and I feel terrible for those I upset with the stupidity of my act," Katidis said in a statement. Greece's soccer federation said the gesture was severely provocative, but the player said he did not know the gesture was a Nazi salute and said he was merely pointing. The federation unanimously decided the sanction after an extraordinary general meeting last Sunday. "The action by the player to salute spectators with a Nazi salute defies common sense, profoundly shows disrespect to all the victims of Nazi atrocities and injures the peaceful and deeply human character of football," the federation said in an announcement. "The Greek Football Federation condemns unequivocally and categorically such actions." The federation said it would take all appropriate steps "to preserve the peaceful nature of football and to promote the values of solidarity, cooperation and respect that it professes." AEK have asked the player to appear before the club's administration on Wednesday to explain his actions, while on the same day Super League officials will meet to discuss the case. Greek media reported that Katidis was given time off by AEK in order to visit his wife in Italy and that his future with the Athens club was in doubt. Last August, Katidis signed a four-year contract with AEK. After the match he wrote on his Twitter site: "I am not a fascist and I would not have done it if I had known what it means. I know the consequences and I would never have done it." AEK's German coach, Ewald Lienen,

Greek Soccer Player Gets Life Ban For Nazi Salute

TIMES SPORTS
The lack of venues for the Fiji Sun/ GP Batteries National Football League games in the Southern Division has become a serious issue for Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA). Fiji FA vice-president/National League Board chairman Shiek Ibrahim highlighted his concern on the lack of venues available to host the games in the Southern Division. With the major renovation works currently taking place at two major playing venues in the Southern Division at ANZ National Stadium in Suva and Nausoris Ratu Cakobau Park we are facing lot of problems, he said. Ibrahim made the comments after the NFL Premier League match between Nasinu and Tailevu-Naitasiri at Rishikul College was delayed for one hour from its 3pm scheduled kick off time.

defended his player, whom he claimed was ignorant to the salute's significance. "He is a young kid who does not have any political ideas. He most likely saw such a salute on the internet or somewhere else and did it, without knowing what it means," he said. "I am 100 per cent sure that Giorgos did not know what he did. He was crying in the dressing room seeing how the media reacted. He is young and needs protection." In his statement, Katidis reiterated that he was not a fascist. "I have a step brother from Puerto Rico and all my family are from the Black Sea and have experienced racism in the worst ways," he said. "I made the mistake so I will be the one to pay for it, AEK is not responsible. So that is why I have decided to put myself out of the team because I have now realised how much I have offended the history of the club. "Also, I understand fully the reasons for the decision made by the Greek Football Federation to which I owe a huge apology as it has helped me to get where I am in the professional game." Racial tensions have been heightened in Greece in recent years with the emergence of the extreme right-wing Golden Dawn political movement. The party won 7 per cent of the vote at last year's election, enough to win 21 seats in parliament.

Lack Of Venues A Serious Issue For Fiji FA

The lack of proper ground markings was believed to be the problem. In the Premier League game, the host district is supposed to arrange their ground and do everything in order to host the match, unlike Super Premier Division matches where Fiji FA arranges for the game to be played at a particular venue and proper arrangements are done for the match to start without any delay, Ibrahim said. He highlighted that with the crisis they are facing with the ground availability and the problem with the Premier league ground availability they may look into taking the future Premier games to be played with the Super Premier division matches. This is one of the options that we may look into to solve this issue with the ground problem we are facing at the moment, Ibrahim added.

Postponement Costly For Suva

Suva is not happy with Fiji Football Associations decision to postpone the Fiji Sun/GP Batteries National Football League match against Nadroga. Fiji FA postponed the Suva-Nadroga and Nadi- Navua match at Prince Charles Park because of unplayable ground conditions. Suva Football president Mahend Prasad described the postponement as ridiculous. We have played league games in worst ground conditions before and we are not happy with this postponement in the last minute, Prasad said. The team was already in Sigatoka when we were told that the match has been postponed. We spend $3000 in preparing the team. Fiji FA officials should have inspected the ground and inform us a bit earlier so we would have to make this trip down all the way to the Western division. This year Suva soccer spends a lot in travelling to the Western division to play the games and this postponement is another loss to us, Prasad said. We want Fiji FA to refund us for the cost. Meanwhile, Fiji FA vice-president/ National League Board chairman Shiek Ibrahim said the postponement was something beyond their control. Due to heavy rain on Saturday, we were told that the ground is not in a playable condition. And soon after getting the message, we advised Suva of the postponement. Ibrahim says the postponement will not affect the schedule. At this stage everything is as schedule and we are certain that we will complete the NFL matches as per our schedule.

Navua Football Association is keen to sign two international players in the new transfer window which came into effect last Friday. Navua FA Faud Ali president said the side is also looking to sign four local players but chose to be mum on their identities. We are interested in six players and will only be able to reveal their names should we be successful, he said. Meanwhile the association will put in a vacancy advertisement for the coaching position left vacant by Manoj Kumar. Seeing that all NFL games have been postponed we have taken enough

Chael Sonnen's title shot against UFC champion Jon Jones is about a month away, but the outspoken fighter already has his eyes set on a new target, 67-year-old WWE CEO Vince McMahon. News recently broke (via RDS.ca) that McMahon had once asked to fight UFC president Dana White inside the Octagon or wrestle him in the ring. "I've never said this before ever in an

We can either do it in the UFC or let's do it at WrestleMania." Now, Sonnen has come to the defense of his boss, berating McMahon on Twitter and taking a jab at WWE superstar CM Punk.

Lautoka Football Association has put a freeze on player signings for now and is concentrating on hiring a coach for the district for the remainder of this season. The executives have shortlisted four candidates for the top job and will be making an announcement on the successful applicant before April 7. President Shalendra Prasad said it is vital to get a coach on board first so they can identify the weak links in the team and making signings accordingly. "We do not want to rush through the signings and will make a decision after

hiring a new coach," he said. "A lot of players are keen to join Lautoka in the new window and I have been receiving a lot of calls on a daily basis. We will only make recruitments in positions which we lack in. Our strike force was not on target and we may need to sign some strikers." In the last few rounds we have noticed that this is an area we need to work on along with the fact that we need to beef up on our defence, so these are the areas we will be working on in this transfer window. It is hard at the moment to make a decision because we dont have a coach and we feel that we need to sit with whoever is appointed to sit and let him decide which positions needs to be filled and the suitable candidates needed to fill those positions, he said. The association had earlier revealed the names of those shortlisted to take the coaching position with the exception of one, a former Lautoka rep. All those currently in the bid for the Blues coaching job are former U23 Olympian coach Emmanuel Mar, current Tailevu, Naitasiri coach Tagi Vonolagi and Canadian Jack Reddy.

Canada 7's team has set its goal to be in the cup quarters of the Hong Kong 7's and for this to happen they will have to beat teams like Fiji, Spain and Hong Kong in the pool stages. Coach, Geraint John said Canada's pool match against Fiji on Saturday night will be a big one and their main concentration will be on this match. Speaking to the reporter from Hong Kong, Geraint said Fiji should not be ruled out despite its dismal

performances in previous tournaments. Canada defeated Fiji in the bowl final of the New Zealand 7's. Fiji will play Hong Kong at 9.06pm today in the first match. Fiji's second pool match is against Spain at 2.06pm on Saturday and Canada at 10.54pm. The cup quarterfinals start 3.48pm on Sunday, cup semis kicks off at 8.06pm and the cup final will be played at 11pm.
