Mass audiences consume mainstream media, such as soaps, sit-coms or reality TV shows. These are large in number.

Introduction There are different types of audience. Niche audiences are smaller in number and are more specialist in their interests. These niche audiences tend to be very loyal, since their interest in topics, such as farming or gardening, can be life-long interests.

We have previously mentioned that the media industry places target audiences into segments and profiles them. The media has relied in the past on placing people in social categories which can predict behaviour to a large degree. So, what are these categories? Lets take a look.
