From alpha version to betaversion
Every year, TOPdesk releases two new ver-sions with various new features. In 2013, ourcustomers can expect the arrival of versions5.2 and 5.3 in the second and fourth quarters,respectively. In addition, service packs will bereleased as maintenance to previous versions.Here at TOPdesk, we put a lot of effort intothe quality of these releases. Each individualpart of the software is tested thoroughly dur-ing the development process. The functionaldevelopment ends three months before theplanned release; after this point, individualparts of the version can no longer be adjusted.After completing the functional development,the so-called beta phase starts. In this period,the beta version is tested extensively, with theDevelopment department setting aside timeto address problems and implement improve-
ments. Once the first tests have been success-
fully completed, the beta version is installed inTOPdesk’s own production environment andused intensively by our various departments.Any problems with the software during thisperiod are immediately communicated to theDevelopment department. This input is incor-porated in the next beta version, which is thenused to perform further tests. Once the betaversion has been in use without any problems
for some time, the final important part of the
beta phase starts: the beta programme forcustomers.
What is the beta programme?
Beta customers are the first ones to use the
new version in their test environment, andsometimes even their production environ-ment. These customers’ feedback is veryimportant for TOPdesk when completing the
final release, because the beta version is used
with various environmental variables. Exam-
ples include specific TOPdesk licence combi-
nations, operating systems, database history,and number of end users. TOPdesk is interest-ed in seeing whether beta customers can dis-cover things that are technically, graphically,or functionally not up to par with the quality
