What is that smell? Before blaming family members

or clients for not showering, take a minute to assess your brick and mortar structure. Recent studies back that unpleasant indoor odors can be largely blamed on high humidity. What you smell may be the result of a lack of proper ven la on and dehumidica on. One of the largest challenges of home and business indoor environments is the ability to properly manage the air ow and moisture inherent in them. Overlooking this can lead to a problem which will materialize right under your nose the crea on of a space perfectly suited as a breeding ground for unwelcome living organisms - like mold spores which can easily form thanks to the perfect storm of moisture, food, and air. The building industry agrees, and has begun to modify its prac ces to alleviate the problem. Un l about ten years or so ago, each component of the building industry worked separately on construc on projects. Each trade focused on their own specialty, and paid no a en on to the fact that all of their dierent materials and installa on prac ces might have a direct impact on the space as a whole system, and that every component posi vely or nega vely worked with one another. The root cause for organism build up and the resultant musty smell is water. Whether water is present due to condi ons of, say, recent ooding, or perhaps lack of fresh air into a space, or even over or under sized mechanical systems (such as your air condi oning unit), water is the culprit. With all the me spent indoors, its never been more important to look how water can adversely aect air quality than now. Recently built homes along with newer remodeling projects are constructed much ghter thanks to be er building prac ces, but the resul ng cocoon cannot breathe. Contractors do not understand the importance of actual mechanical ven la on, and underes mate or ignore the use of

components which can control the amount of fresh air brought into the home. Newer ven la on components are necessary to take the place of the cracks and leaks found in older structures - and as undesirable as those aws may sound - actually allowed for some fresh-air ow. Older homes certainly arent exempt from problems. In fact, far from it. Mold and odors thrive in damp crawl spaces, underven lated a cs, leaking founda ons, and unvented bathrooms. The resultant musty smell from any of those can linger all season long. If thats the case, its important to dehumidify, whether using portable or duct mounted equipment, especially in warm weather. Our area calls for such equipment to run all summer long for the best results. All is not doom and gloom. Through proper tes ng, design, and control we can now eliminate excess moisture. Using fresh air ven la on systems and ducted dehumidiers we have been able to eliminate musty smells due to water and organism build ups from homes and businesses. In most cases, we totally eliminate the airborne pollutants and unpleasant scents using RGF Germicidal lamps. The lamps are installed in all instances of direct ood damage because they have such an excep onal track record of success. August Is National Water Quality Month

Because August is tradi onally a month lled with outdoor ac vi es o en in close proximity to water, it is important to recognize the importance of water quality. The easiest way to ensure proper quality is by being aware of the issues and doing our part to conserve one of the most vital of our planets resources while maintaining good health in the process. Our area depends on ground and lake waters. Depending on your exact loca on, you know that your water supply has its unique quality issues. Toxin and microbes are part of the mix in city water; the ground source is pumped though extremely hard sediment. Use of either requires defense on our part to keep as much of the undesirable elements out of our bodies. Tes ng has shown that more and more toxins as well as household products are invading our drinking water. Invest in gadgets that aid ltering of the water from your faucet. In some homes, it will mean focusing on those lters which remove high iron content and odd smells. In others, concentrate on systems promising to remove city water toxins. Thats a short version of the health issues. The other part of awareness involves conserva on. You know most of these, but it never hurts to be reminded. I like the commercial that begins with its about me we started talking about what happens in the bathroom (and not only because the actress looks and sounds like my wife). That room is, a er all, where most of us begin and end our day! How old are your toilets? If they havent been replaced within the last ve years, chances are they may be using more water than necessary to accomplish the task. When replacing, select xtures with the lower gallons per ush numbers. The lower the number, the less water wasted. Turn o the faucet while brushing your teeth. You only need water to moisten the brush, and again to rinse and clean. Leaving water on for the dura on wastes countless gallons annually. Also, look at installing replacement faucets that have aerators or water ow regulators. Outdoors is a great place for water conserva on. Too o en, we over-water our lawns and gardens. Quick p: you need to water your lawn if your footprints remain a er you walk on it. Water in the evening. The cooler temperature helps grasses absorb more, and the water evaporate less. Over-watering creates more run o which could introduce fer lizer into the ground water. Wait for dry weather to apply growing aids and pes cides so we can keep those near to the ground where they are useful instead of seeping deeply in ground and into water levels. Conserve also by inves ng in a rain barrel. Its a slick and inexpensive way to stockpile free water for your gardening needs. Theyre available at most local hardware stores, easy to set up, and dont cost money to use. If you have metered water rates where you live, you should see a drop in your bill. There is no one general product that will be the best solu on for you. You decide that a er being armed with the understanding of how much water you use, what your usage costs you, and whats actually in your supply. You CAN have the water in your home tested and analyzed. If you have city water, be sure to get a copy of the latest water quality test results. Municipali es should have this informa on available to residents. Regardless of where you live or the quality of your water, take some me to think about ltra on and conserva on. The more we help our planet and our bodies, the be er o we all will be.

Greg is one of our senior men around here now. Hes been a Corcoran Hea ng and Air Condi oning installer for over eleven years. Before that, he worked with a compe tor for ve years in the same capacity. You can feel assured he has plenty of residen al HVAC experience. And because we need employees with dierent sub- special es and skills, Greg is essen al to our big commercial jobs as he is an expert welder. Greg grew up in Lake Zurich. He followed the voca onal educa on route in high school. Just like the rest of us, hes not done with educa on in this ever-evolving industry. He has taken courses (anything combus on related, for example) and will con nue to do so which will keep him on top of his game. Speaking of which, when not working or on family duty, Greg plays sand volleyball three mes a week. He also shares Tom and Johns love of scuba diving. The Jones Family lives in Island Lake, and consists of Greg, his wife Stacey and their three children: daughters Sydnie (age 14) and MacKenzie (11), and son Linkoln (7). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add salt. Add your pasta to the water and occasionally give it a s r so it doesnt s ck together. While the pasta is cooking, heat a 12 inch skillet over medium high heat and add the olive oil. Add the anchovies to the pan and cook, s rring, un l the anchovies melt into the oil. Add the zucchini and cook un l golden brown, about 2 minutes and season with red pepper akes. Drain the pasta, reserving 1/2 cup of the pasta water and add both to the pan, seasoning with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Finish cooking the pasta for an addi onal 1 to 2 minutes then nish with Parmesan, tomatoes and mint and give it a taste, adding addi onal seasoning if necessary. (We subs tuted garlic for anchovies, and would add grilled chicken or seafood in the future). Serve the pasta on a large pla er or individual plates and drizzle the top with a good amount of olive oil. Helpful Tip: If youre trying to keep it healthy, then replace more of the pasta with thinly sliced zucchini. You can use other vegetables in place of the zucchini, such as yellow squash or eggplant. You can also replace the mint with other herbs like tarragon, if you prefer.

A Dogs World:
I am going to keep this months note short for two reasons. The rst so that you can enjoy this great picture of me and my new brother. The second because I am too stinking tired. The parents talk about how great the baby is sleeping, but do not take into account that I fully wake up every time they get up to feed and change my brother. No longer am I enjoying a quiet full eight hours of sleep. We worry about our brother too, and it keeps us up at night! Not to mention the fatigue that comes form entertaining all of the visitors we are coming to see Murphy and me. And baby Jack too I guess. SO if we seem a bit groggy at work, or are not quite as excited and jumpy as you are used to then you can thank my parents. I had no idea how much hard work having another brother was going to be. The good news is that we still get to go to work everyday, as well as, go on lots of walks. Apparently babies really like to walk and enjoy the great outdoors. Maybe it is just the constant chirping of the cicadas that keeps Jack happy. Not sure about your neighborhoods, but

ours lled with all those old oaks at every house has been a concert of cicadas on a regular basis. I can handle the noise I guess, but what I can not handle is the constant dive-bombing as we stroll the sidewalks. The outdoors is big enough for the both of us. Speaking of the great outdoors Murphy and I are looking forward to when Jack can accompany us to the dog park. I assume my parents will prop him up in a baby bjorn so he can see all the fun we get to have. And we are really looking forward to the days when he can throw the ball for us. I imagine he can last longer than my parents, but we will have to wait and see! Talk soon! - Frank

Well, I must say I am very a ered by all the ques ons about the new addi on to the family. Li le Jack is doing great and growing right before our very eyes. We have been fairly lucky with his long spurts of sleep through the night. Based on some horror stories weve heard, we have nothing to complain about. And thankfully, his check-ups have been going great, everythings right on target, including his growing into his 73% head size. I can understand what people were talking about when they said that they wouldnt trade being a parent for anything. Everything Jack does creates excitement in our lives. So far, its been much more posi ve excitement than the stressful kind. Its been easy, too, having the dogs around. Sure, we were nervous at rst, but theyve been great. standing right beside us as Lindsey and I tend to Jack. Maybe thats their way of showing apprecia on for the spike in walks! I do hope that Jack grows up watching be er baseball teams than the current ones! A er all, one of his rst sports experiences was watching the Stanley Cup Championship games. That set a very high

bar for the rest of Chicago sports baseball in par cular. At least Bears training camp has started. Its kind of sad that the best the Windy City can oer for our viewing pleasure is THIS, but Chicago baseball is really unwatchable. I would hate to make Jack sick by subjec ng him to viewing. At our house, weve switched to golf tournaments. Its become our rou ne..and a great nap starter. The one thing I hope that Jack can enjoy in August is Shark Week. Thats the seven days each year when scuba nerds like myself unite in awe of viewing such cool creatures. I am hoping that Discovery steps up their programming in 2013 by oering new footage instead of recycling the old. Maybe Im too picky. Maybe thered have to be too much lming to ll up an en re week. I hope the increase in celebrity men ons about the week will generate increased adver sing revenue to boost their shark week budget. I do hope that you enjoy Jacks rst Shark Week onesie. He doesnt seem to mind our dressing him in that. At least, he didnt voice any complaints. The only ones we ever hear seem to stem from wet diapers, hunger,

or just being red. Well, as Jack con nues to grow, Ill be sure to give you updated pictures and info. Again, thanks to those who have passed along notes, kind wishes, and welcomed advice. From our family to yours: enjoy the rest of summer. Talk soon!
