PLAN PURPOSE
Fisk Middle School is part of the Twin Rivers R-10 School district. There are approximately
175 students in grades 5 – 8. The technological resources the teachers have at their disposal
are few and outdated. However, most teachers are not using any technology in their
classroom because they lack training to integrate the technological resources that they do
have. All teachers have at least one computer and have high-speed Internet access. Some
teachers have an additional two student computers in their classrooms that also have high-
speed Internet access. There are 4 classrooms that have SMARTboards. Some of the other
classrooms have projectors. There is one middle school computer lab equipped with 20 old
computers running Windows 98 with high-speed Internet access.
The purpose of this plan is to ensure the Fisk Middle School staff has been introduced to all
the technological resources at their disposal and have the opportunity to be properly trained
using these technological resources. Since technology has become a main source of
collaboration among today’s students and students thrive on technology, we must increase
technology use by teacher’s in the classroom to achieve meaningful learning.
This staff development plan will connect teachers with students on a technology level.
Training teachers to use more technology and current and better ways to incorporate it will
increase technology use in the classroom. Through technology, teachers will find new
methods of creating student motivation, connecting with students, and meeting curriculum
goals.
NEEDS ASSESSMENT
An initial survey would be used to determine in which areas of technology teachers feel they
need to be trained or need additional training. A second survey would be given to the
students to determine how often they access technology while at school and how comfortable
they are with using technology.
From the surveys, it would be fairly easy to conclude which programs teachers use most
often and need additional training for. Furthermore, the surveys should reveal what
technology resources teachers have, but are not using due to lack of knowledge of how to use
such resources. In addition, since teachers’ technological resources are limited, most teachers
need to learn the basics.

Since the technological resources are limited at the middle school, this staff development
plan will focus on training teachers to use and/or how to integrate technological resources on
the following:
I. School Information Systems (This system is being purchased by the
district and will be implemented in Aug. 2009)
a. Finding SIS on your computer
b. Entering username and password
c. Taking attendance
d. Setting up and using the grade book function
e. Transmitting grades at term
f. Viewing student schedules
III.Microsoft Word
a. What is a document?
b. Page set-up
c. Formatting text (fonts, size, color, etc.)
d. Saving documents
e. Using bullets and numbering
f. Using borders
g. Participants will create a document given a handout and step-by-
step instructions. The handout will allow space for note taking.
h. Discuss various ways to use Word in the classroom and links to
Websites for lesson plans.
**Note: Since only 4 teachers have SMARTBoards in their classrooms, we did not find it
worthy to offer SMARTBoard training at this time. When more classrooms receive
SMARTBoards, training will be offered.

The entire technology plan will take place over a year. Since the district is implementing
School Information Systems (SYS) at the beginning of the next school year (Aug. 2009), all
teachers will be required to attend the SIS training. In addition, teachers will be required to
attend at least 4 of the other training sessions of their choice. The training sessions will be
offered during ½ day “early-out” profession development days throughout the school year.
The PD days are on Wednesdays from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. The follow-up sessions and Got
Questions – Get Answers will be offered after school from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
INSTRUCTOR BASE
Since our school does not really have a “technology department”, the instructors will be
teachers from the district who have had formal training in the above sessions. Our district
employs one person in the technology department and that is the technology repairperson,
Hequembourg. She works at all three campuses and repairs all technology that is not
working properly. The teachers selected to be the trainers of the above sessions have formal
training in their selected areas and use and integrate the technology on a regular basis in their
classroom. The teachers will receive career ladder hours and/or a $20 per hour stipend of
their choice.

Several methods of evaluation exist within this staff development plan. First, an
administrator will be in every session of training provided. Each administrator will
participate in the activities and training regardless of their knowledge base. Administrators
will also focus on comments and productivity of other staff members. Administrators will
discuss the comments with the trainers of the sessions to decide what may be improved.
Second, every participant will be asked to complete an evaluation form after completing the
training session. Faculty members are strongly encouraged to write comments that will help
benefit the training process. The trainers of the sessions will review these forms and record
data. Data and progress will be reported to the district administrators.
In respect to evaluating learning during the training process, each training session is product
based. Meaning, participants will create a product during the training. As these products are
created, learning will be evident along with weaknesses that might need to be addressed.
SUPPORT/COACHING PLAN
After every training session, a follow-up training is scheduled. This allows for specific
questions and help topics to arise after faculty has had a week to “play” with or use the
software. These sessions are on a volunteer basis only. Individuals who are successfully
using the program are not required to attend. However, all individuals are encouraged as
these sessions allow time for in-depth exposure to the software programs.
Each trained teacher is assigned a specific technology topic according to their formal
training, usage, and integration of the specific technology. Trainees are given the names,
email, and contact information of the trainer and their respective technology topic in paper
and electronic form. Faculty members (trainees) are strongly encouraged to contact these
individuals whenever they have a need for assistance regarding a specific technology area.
