‘SPECIAL REPORT OF 1K 18 TORPEDOES
Bfter ono of the froshoning charges in the MK 18’ torpedoes,
4% was found that two of the torpedoes vould not hold an cir pressure in
the battery conpartnent.
é was found that the spiders for tho handhole plates containing
the hydrogon burners were warped, time 2 = tos fron being secured
iy against thetr respective seats
3 had consed this condition as ‘*~ torpedoes hed becn air tight shen
% aboard and remained so vhen tic “wo faulty spiders vere ronowod.
In every instance, the upkeep routines ani freshening chargo
cg were adhered to. The foli “ing figures apply to the eight MK 18
os which wore aboard during this patrol.
nvorage length of charge 5k hours
Ivorage Interval between charges 10 days
Average battery tenperature 89 F
iverage gravity drop between charges 20 points
Average voltago drop botwoon charges 15 volts
fiverace temperature at end of charge 10) F
Tho four torpedoes that re exponied, recotved four freshening
charges, while those rotumod receive” six (TO MIDULE). The batteries of the
Frarinag four torpedoes wore watered .r‘or to tho fifth charge, one ounce

1, PIT L0G: Erratic operation of the Pit Log control unit developed,
causing the log to read high at low speeds. 4s attonpts to adjust the control
unit were not satisfactory, the bellows assenbly was overhauled ani 2 nez
bellows installed. The old bollows appeared to be sprung, cause unknomn,
By constant naintensnco of the control unit, tho log vas naic to
give good results at tho right tin,
Complete overhaul of thi: control unit has boon requested during
rofit.
2, MATN GENERATORS: Tho shunt ficld resistor of #1 nain roncrator beran
to heat up excessively at ono of the rosistor taps. Exanination revealed that
‘the tap lug was burned alnost conpletely through,
The connection at tho Iu =nd lead appeared to be tight, so this
was not the cause of tho trouble as originally had boon supposed.
A “jury rig" was usod te put the gonorator back in commission
and operation of the gonerator was ror'od in about 30 minutos.
3. MAIN STORIGE DATTERY: Consido~nble difficulty vas experienced with
high tonperatures in tho forvard batt.r while on sta tion, It mas dfficult
to give overcharges without. reaching tho liniting tenperaturo of 130° F and
the forward part of tho ship was unconfortably hot during nost of the tine
spont on station. Sea injection temp: atures ran betwoon 83° F and 86° F,
it tines 4t was necossary to uso a portable blower to reduce the terperature
4m tho battery well. It 1s bolioved that the temporature in the forvard
woll can be roducod by installing an ov'.rust lino connectod to the chipts oain
exhaust duet or by providing sone othor neans of increasing clrealation through
‘the battory well.

The erackod-lincr Jackets discovered to date are as follows:
#1 Main Bagins; ezlindors 6 and 7. #3 Main Enginos cylinders #1, 6, 8, and 9»

Xt 4s the opinion of the Comanding Officer, thet the cylinder

Jntost type jackets during the next refit for the following ressons:

‘Transmission, using the SD antenna, was not satisfactory.
cm threo(3) occasions different nossages wore transnitted. The 1st nessage
on 10 July, was receipted for ty one boat, but had to be sent again on the next
hour bofore a receipt was obtained fron the other voat in the pack.
on the 15th of July, contact reports wors transnitted on
consecutive hours, but no receipt was ~ccoived. Transnission using the SD nast
was nade on tho 25th of July, boginning at 0900, and evry half-hour until
1100, and no rocoipt was received.
It is believed that a different type of antenna could be used
to a better advantezos possibly a periscope antenna that could be used at
groater depths than the SD mast. Suc. an antonna could be put further out of
water without danger of exposing poriscope shoars or losing good depth control.
