SHATKRIYAKALA

By: Shakuntala.Totar.

Introduction : The dosas undergo abnormalities due to indunlgence in unsuitable

food and activities and they, in turn, bring about abnormalities in

the dhatus (tissues) and produce diseases.
These abnormalities starting minutely develop insuccessive stages
to assume great proportions and become the disease.
The series of vikrta kriya (abnormal activities) successively
developing in different periods of kala (time) is known as
Kriyakala (periods or stages) of evolution of disease.
It is the narration, in sequential order of the abnormal changes
taking place in the dosas, dusyas, agni, srotas; etc.
This knowledge is very helpful for both the diagnosis and
treatment of diseases.

Kriyakala is of two kind viz., a) Rtu kriyakala and b) Vyadhi

kriyakala.
a) Rtu kriyakala The equilibrium of the dosas is very unstable and

is undergoing change constantly every day. These daily changes

happening in particular rtus(seasons) has been described as the three
stages of the dosas as caya (mild increase ), prakopa (profound
increase ) and prasama (decrease to normal).
As the cycle of changes in the Rtus, goes on naturally, so the cycle

of changes in the dosas also are natural events.

Discussion
Chaya in samhati rupa is
understandable in case of doshas like
kapha and pitta witch have visible or
traceable form (murtatva) how can be
the vata is understood ?
