Have you made a promise to yourself to try something new this year or meet new people? Then on Wednesday, February 5 be prepared for the Refreshers Fayre and the opportunity to do just that. The campus already boasts over 60 societies ranging from the arts to culture and since September, 10 new societies have been approved. Many societies will be setting up stalls and looking for new members in Pilkington, but the Medwire has your guide to the newest societies on the block.

Union Council hits campus

Kent Union sabbs and student representatives will be descending on Medway in February for Union Council. The Council, made up of elected representatives from the Kent Union colleges, democracy zones, part-time officers and various committees, meet twice a term to discuss policy and vote on motions. This will be the second time that the Council have held their meeting in Medway. Karl Lewis, Union Council Chair, said: Medway makes up over 15% of the Kent Union membership, and every Kent student in Medway has every much of a chance to participate in Kent Unions democratic structures. Every Kent student at Medway are welcome to attend Union Council, debate or submit a motion about Kent Union. Medway currently has two representatives that sit on the Council; Matt Keeble, President of Medway College as Medway Student Committee and Kieran Watkins of Medway Volunteering Committee. Kent Union Council takes place on Thursday, February 27 in Pilkington 130 from 6pm. To submit a motion or if you have a question about Union Council, email Karl Lewis at kentunionchair@kent. ac.uk. Motions must be submitted by February 20.

Celebrate LGBT history month in Medway

Feeling a bit out of the loop at the moment? Never fear, Campus News Editor Clarissa Place and her team have rounded up all the latest goings on.

Meet the new societies

The LGBT Medway society is hosting a wide range of events this term to coincide with LGBT History Month. This years theme is Music, and LGBT Medway will be supporting the cause by raising awareness on campus. LGBT Medway President Kieran Watkins said: LGBT Medway are really looking forward to working with societies on campus, groups in the local community and the universities for LGBT History Month. The society will be hosting a fancy-dress quiz in February with help from the Medway Amateur Dramatics Society. Quiz teams are invited to dress up as a gay icon or notable LGBT person. For more information on forthcoming LGBT Medway events, visit their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ LGBTMedway

Rob Smith talk

The BBCs Rob Smith will be giving a talk to budding businessmen on February 12. Mr Smith, who is a presenter for BBC South East Today, will come to the Medway campus for an event hosted by the Business Society. The exact location of the talk is yet to be confirmed, but a spokesperson said it will take place at about 12pm. For more details, follow @MBSKent on Twitter.

Hire iPads from Drill Hall

iPads will soon be available to hire for up to a week from the Drill Hall Library. The library are piloting the scheme and making 15 tablets available for Kent, Christ Church and Greenwich students. A library spokesperson also confirmed that the library will turn the Quiet Study zone into a Silent Study zone during the upcoming exam period. They said: This is following on from last years successful trial. We anticipate starting this towards the end of March/ beginning of April. Dates for this will be confirmed in coming weeks.

Talented execs with expertise

The Climbing Society hosted a successful Give It A Go session in November and have talented executives with plenty of expertise between them, all for 5 membership. Jack Moss, a second year Civil Engineering student has been a qualified instructor for three and a half years. The society president said: I decided to set up the society to get more people climbing and into the UK hills. Its great to get more friends to enjoy it with and so it seemed the perfect way of doing it. I was a member of a climbing and mountaineering club at my previous university and the opportunities I got were fantastic, and so I thought it would be good to give opportunities such as those to other people! The group have taken to the walls at the Reach and Arethusa and hope with growing members, they can organise socials and trips. Jack added: Being a new society and undertaking a sport which is not that big in the South East is a challenge and will remain a challenge until the society has taken part in interesting and successful trips and

whole new activities. For the Sustainability Society, they have made it their mission to raise awareness of all things green on the campus and through projects in the local community. Lauren Newberry, the societys vice president said: People should join our society if they want to gain voluntary experience, take part in projects or if they have great ideas on how to make their campus a green, more sustainable place.

Bow ties and fezzes are cool

The society has also been working with the university to create growing space on the campus as well as a variety of projects in the community including biodiversity and renewable energy. Membership costs 3. After a fantastic 50th anniversary

and the final farewell to Matt Smith, Doctor Who fans do not have to wait for the start of Peter Capaldis reign to talk about the sci-fi show; the Who Society is the campuss quirkiest society, for just 3. Clara Easthill, joint president of the society said: We will definitely show some more of the greatest Doctor Who episodes, have socials, and we are even planning a trip to Cardiff this year to visit the Doctor Who experience! Join if you are a Whovian, wear bow ties and fezzes... because they are cool! For Get Crafty, second year students Natalie Wren and Gemma Nixon are looking for new members. Gemma said: People should join because Get Crafty is a relaxing social event where you can learn new skills and exchange ideas. We aim to get people interested in starting their own craft projects. Get Crafty costs 3 to join.

This is the first year of Unifactor created by the student events company Team Lucrative to give a platform to student musicians. The competition is open to all students from Kent, UCA, CCCU and Greenwich at Medway. Starter - Mussels Marinere
Youll need: 500g fresh mussels, 30ml white wine, 30ml double cream, 3 sprigs thyme, handful Then: The mussels will have beards on them which need to be removed by hand before cooking. If you find any mussels that are open, tap them on a surface; if they remain open after doing so, discard as they are no longer alive. Add a little oil to a large pan over a medium heat and gently fry the onions, garlic and thyme, until soft. Add the wine and bring to a simmer, then add the mussels and cover the pan. Leave for 2-3mins, then check. The mussels are cooked when they are all open. Add the rest of the ingredients and season with a little pepper and a squeeze of lemon, no salt as the mussels release salty juices. Serve with dipping bread.

Elizabeths of Eastgate
A valid option for anyone who are looking for a classic romantic dine. Located on Rochester High Street, the French restaurant has won several awards and was singled out as one of TopTables Top 10 Hidden Gems from across the UK back in 2009. With shiny cutlery, gleaming wine glasses and white tablecloths, the inside of the restaurant is like taken out of a romantic comedy much more than the outside would suggest. But be ware of your wallets,,this fine dine is not for everyones bank

Finding the perfect place for your Valentines date isnt easy, but Stine Wannebo might have some romantic advice to help you along the way.

Nothing says romance like Valentines Day, where the dream is a quiet but romantic meal for two at a small and intimate restaurant. The waiters should be French or Italian, speaking fast with a strong accent while leading you through the many delicious but somewhat pricy choices on the menu. The wine should be red and the roses too. Or is this just a bit too clich for you? No matter your liking the ultimate question is; can you find it in Medway?

Loved up like a loved up thing this Valentines? Or perhaps youre still looking for that someone special.? Either way, from cheap and cheerful to flashy and cash splashy, weve got it all.
You dont need to go out to have a good time this Valentines, heck you dont even need a date (thats what flatmates are for, right?). Jake Taylor shows you how to whip up something extraordinary.

C C
Odeon, Dockside Ship n Trades
The place to go for those who want to keep Valentines casual. At the edge of Chatham Dockside and with a view to the twinkling lights of St Marys Island, this pub might not be the obvious place for a date, but it is a excellent one. The food is enjoyable, the beer is nice and so is the marina themed interior. But the fact that it is not too far from campus means that you might run into someone you know, for better or for worse. But that should be a risk you are willing to take.

Always an option but if you do want to go watch some flicks, the right movie is absolutely key. Try to keep it light and fun, no one looks or feels at their best while laughing hysterically or crying their eyes out. Buy sweets. And popcorn (you will have to be able to call it a meal somehow). And have a drink after. Youll be fine.

o C
Topes
Quite simply the tiniest, cosiest looking restaurant ever, and very close to Rochester Cathedral. This is yet another one of those classic romantic spots but if you want to secure a table for two you will need to be quick they do get booked out. Their dishes are rather fancy, but not as pricy as you would think. The inside is astonishing, as this European restaurant has kept all the original features from the 15th 17th century building. Sounds romantic to me.

Main - Steak with herby potatoes and rocket salad

Youll need: 2 small rump steaks (left for 20mins at room temperature before cooking), 200g
charlotte potatoes, halved, 2 cloves garlic whole, handful button mushrooms, rocket and watercress, 2tsp lemon juice, 2 sprigs thyme, leaves picked, a few leaves of mint, finely chopped, 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar, 1 tsp caster sugar, 2 tsp wholegrain mustard, handful cherry tomatoes, halved, knob of butter, 20ml double cream, 20ml white wine.

Last but not least there is something important to point out: who am I to say what you find romantic? Medway is full of restaurants, cafes and pretty benches where you can sit down and enjoy a meal. The best advice I can give is just to have a look around the towns - you might find the perfect setting for you and your Valentine where you least expect it.

Then: Preheat the oven to 200C and place the potatoes and garlic in a roasting tray. Cover with

a good glug of olive oil and the fresh herbs. Season with salt and pepper and roast for 30mins or until golden brown. Whilst the potatoes are roasting prepare the salad. For the dressing, mix the oil, vinegar, lemon juice, 1tsp mustard, sugar and a pinch of salt. Then pour over the rocket, watercress and tomatoes and mix well. When the potatoes have been in for 20mins, it is time to fry the steak. Add a knob of butter with a drop of oil to a pan on a high heat and melt until foaming. Season both sides of the steak with salt and pepper, then fry. For medium rare fry for 3mins each side. Remember turn the steak every minute for an even cook. When the steak is cooked to your liking, remove from the pan and leave to rest for 10mins before serving. Whilst waiting, make the mushroom sauce. Add wine and a little water to the pan you fried the steak in, over a high heat for 30s, to burn off the alcohol. Then add the mushrooms and cook for 2mins. When ready, add cream, the resting juices of the steak, 1tsp mustard and season with salt and pepper. To serve, place a handful of the salad alongside the steak and herby potatoes. Spoon a generous amount of sauce all over.

Still looking for Mr Ri

While some of us might be loved up and disgustingly happy this Valentines, there are plenty among our mists who have become way to comfortable with the prospect of living alone with cats. Forever. We decided to drag Jem Collins and Rebecca Lawrence out of their onsie and chocolate pits for a crash course in 21st century dating.
Im 20 years old and Ive never had a boyfriend. I, on the other hand have had several, Im just a queen at peeing them off in an astronomical fashion. So much so, Ive kind of given up. Now, I dont think thats a big deal. I am ONLY 20. But, it is getting rather tiring trying to convince my mum that Im not a closeted lesbian and laughing off the fact that my friends keep telling me Im going to die alone. Equally, when it comes to the point where youre the only single female on your entire university course, its probably time to reconsider your life choices. So, I decided to keep an open mind and try out some of the dating options open to 20 somethings in 2014. I mean, whats the worst that could happen?

Its awful to say, but theres something strangely satisfying about clicking through strangers faces based only on their appearance. I know its bad, but its really, really hard to stop. To be honest, the whole converation part of the app is just a nusiance. No, I do not want to have sex with you. Plus, nothing comes close to the joy of discovering that the fit guy with abs so defined they looked photoshopped, had liked you . It wouldnt matter if they never actually spoke to me or could have swiped like by mistake the fact that Id been paired in the first place was a big enough ego boost for me. Infact, Id probably go so far to say Id never actually met anyone off this app; Id be far to scared Harry, 22, might actually be an aged axe wielding murderer. Or perhaps Im being too judgmental. This aside, my Tinder account has now been deleted for two reasons.

u 70% of yo lly are sexua ile active wh ity at univers

First, I downloaded casual dating app Tinder which, if Im honest about, I still dont see the point of. As a woman, its quite easy to walk into a bar and find a guy willing to partake in casual sex. So, if thats all I was after then I dont really need to download an app. At least you could download the damn thing though - some of us and our state-of-the-art Windows phone had to settle for Badoo, which from what I can glean so far, is just a less classy and less socially acceptable version of Tinder. Ill admit though that Tinder has some pretty addictive qualities. Time really does fly when youre swiping through a hoard of average looking guys and the odd penis pic.

(Speak for yourself, Im still going superficial and strong.)First, the only information I have to go on is what theyve put on their Facebook page I cant play height roulette with guys what if I fancy wearing my 6 heels? I dont want to dwarf the poor bastard! And what if theyre the ugly friend in their group profile picture? Thats a risk I dont want to take. Second, Im not a big fan of the localised aspect of the app. Ignoring the fact that I had to swipe past several guys I grew up with - what if I were to go out and someone were to recognise me from Tinder? I would probably die of shame. Im clinging to the hope that my ex-colleagues and current coursemates I bumped into on there also died of shame, I never want to mention the encounter again. I guess my standards were a bit too high for someone using a free hookup app..

STI Tests: Think of it like an MOT

by Kieran Watkins
But if you do touch each other, you will get Chlamydia, and die, said Coach Carr in the 2004 teen movie Mean Girls. Well, chances are you wont die. But Coach Carr makes a valid point; why risk something serious when its seriously easy to get an STI test. When I first went to the GUM (Genito-Urinary Medicine) Clinic at Medway Maritime Hospital, it wasnt because I had symptoms or had done something unprotected and silly. I have always been safe and have always used protection, but it just felt like the right thing to do. Youre then called into a private room, where a doctor will ask you a few questions about your recent sexual history. This, for me, is the worst bit. Questions theyll ask will include; Do you have sex with men or women, or both?, Do you have unprotected sex?, Was the sexual interaction with a friend or stranger? etc. Its like a police interrogation, but theres no lawyer next to you and they wont judge you, whatever you admit to doing. Theyll want to know all the details, so be honest. Theyll write this all down in a file, which theyll keep for when you come back in the future. Once the questions are answered, the examination begins. Youll be lying on the bed to start with, so theyll ask you to drop your trousers and protect your modesty with a piece of blue paper towel, all done behind the safety of a curtain. Try not to be nervous, theyll only ask you to relax. Depending on what youre being tested for, theyll take a few swabs from your throat, genitals and anus.

by Jem Collins
Seventy per cent of Medway students do not know what sexual health services are available to them, a Medwire survey has revealed. More than 80 per cent of students also admit they fail to take regular STI tests, despite 70 per cent of respondents claiming they are sexually active. Of those who said they did not take regular STI tests, 18 per cent said this was because they were too lazy or the test was too much hassle, while seven percent said they were scared of a postive result. 13 per cent admitted that they simply hadnt thought about the need for a test. A further 30 percent also said they did not always use protection when having sex. Matt Keeble, president of the Medway College Commitee said the figures were crazy. He added: The fact that 70% of students werent aware of the sexual health services available to them at the Medway campus, is frankly frighteningly high. This study definitely shows the need for more information and education regarding these services,

Welcome to this very special edition of the Medwire and our first ever campaign; sexual health awareness fortnight. Weve never done anything like this before, but weve always wanted to give something back and help make our campus a better place. Over the past few months weve spoke to hundreds of you to find out just what the issues regarding sexual health on the Medway campus are; some of the things weve found have been quite shocking, so weve decided to do something about it. Over the following two weeks we will be supplementing the news and advice in this pull-out with a range of articles and videos on our website, as well as getting out and about on campus to give you freebies, advices, raise awareness and just have a general chat. Were also campaigning for better information and services from all Medway Universities and unions, as well a specific condom budget for the Medway Campus. Were really keen to hear your views still, so do let us know your thoughts and what you want to get out of this week.

The Medwire Team

Thank Yous We wouldnt have been able to do this all by ourselves, and were really grateful to all of the organisations whove supported us. In particular wed like to thank the Medway Volunteer Committee, for their kind grant which allowed us to print an extra four pages advert free. Weve also really appreciated the help, collaboration and advice from Megan Wells (VP Welfare, Kent Union), Medway Student Committee, Medway Council, Medway Labour, Medway Conservative Group, Medway Citizens Advice Bureau, A Better Medway, Metro and Kent Community Health Trust.

Council willing to look into opening clinic on campus

by Kieran Watkins
Medway Councils Director for Adult Services has said that the universities and local authority should seriously consider opening a sexual health clinic on campus. Cllr David Brake (Cons) spoke to the Medwire about sexual health service provision in Medway, and when questioned about the lack of service on the Medway campus, said that all parties should be working together to address the issue. Mr Brake, who represents the Walderslade ward, said: This is something we should seriously consider. I believe that we ought to be working with the local NHS, the CCG, the commissioners of such service, to see what can be done to actively support clinics here on the campus. Medway Council took over the provision of sexual health services from he

which the Medway Student Committee will be working to achieve. The shocking statistics are the result of a Medwire survey between December 2013 and January 2014, which spoke to more than 100 Medway students. The study also revealed that 25 per cent of students had been with more than four sexual partner while at university. 13 per cent had slept with between five and eight people, with four per cent having slept with 12 to 15 people and six per cent having gone to bed with more than 16 people. For more information on the results of our survey, check out our website.

You drive in the service station and get checked over by a qualified mechanic
After a couple of dates and a few one night stands, a feeling of guilt crept up on me. How do I know theyd had a test when I asked them if they were clean? I knew that the safest, most responsible thing to do would be to have myself checked out. Think of it like an MOT. You drive in to the service station, get everything checked over by a qualified mechanic, await the results and, if given the all clear, you dont need to come back until the next time you feel something might be wrong with your engine and all its parts. Ok, humorous analogies aside, the STI clinic in Medway runs in a similar way. The clinic, open Mon-Fri 9am 3.45pm, closing later on Wednesdays, offers a free walk-in service for residents and students in Medway. Located in the hospital do check the map, its impossible to find otherwise the friendly reception staff will ask you to fill in some details and sit in the waiting room until the doctor or nurse is free.

They wont judge you, whatever you admit to doing

Even I will admit to clenching my teeth when they peel back your foreskin and stick a cotton bud into your urethra. But its all over pretty quickly, and youll soon find yourself back on your feet. First part over. The second part involves peeing in a pot. Self explanatory really. Just to clarify, youll do this in a private bathroom, not in front of the doctor. The third and final part will be a blood test. A different nurse will sit you in a chair and take one or two samples, depending on what theyre testing for. If youre not a fan of blood or needles I hate both then try not to look. I usually close my eyes and

count to ten. I havent fainted yet, and theres a water cooler nearby if you do feel a bit shaky. Thats it. All done. Theyll give you a piece of paper with a number on to call back in two weeks when your results are in, give you a bag of free condoms and wave you off. That wasnt so hard was it? The Clinic in Medway are really helpful. Ive been there a few times, and each time theyre friendly, approachable and know what theyre doing. They are reassuring, and will answer any questions you have during the tests. You might not have any symptoms, and you might have always worn protection or used contraception during intercourse, but can you be really sure? Taking an STI test is simple and sensible. Just do it.

Contraception Options...
local health authority last April KCHT already provide a number of school and college sexual health clinics, including one which runs at Mid Kent College in Gillingham. Cllr Brake told the Medwire that his department would be running a needs assessment test of the sexual health services in the first half of 2014. ABOVE: Cllr Brake thinks the issue should be looked at. While the contraceptive pill, the coil, the implant and the injection are 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, the same cant be said for sexually transited infections. You might have heard it a million times from your school nurse or your parents but the only effective form of protection against STIs and pregnancy (apart from abstinence) is condoms. Because condoms are a barrier method,

they prevent sperm or any nasty infections spreading to or from your partner. Taking two minutes to put a condom on before the throes of passion take over can be the difference between sitting in a clinic waiting roomor not. Did you know you can get condoms for free? You can pick up free condoms from contraception clinics, sexual health clinics, freshers fayre and even from your GP. Cur-

rently were campaigning to get free condoms on campus too. If you dont fancy that, theres a variety on sale in high street stores, online or even the loos in most pubs or clubs so theres no excuses for not having one handy.

After my wonderful experience on Tinder I decided to try out online dating. Being a poor student I decided to sign up to free dating website Plenty of Fish. I, on the otherhand opted for OK Cupid, a similarly free dating site Ive heard dubious reports about. Not trusting myself to set up the account myself, I let Deputy Editor and long time bezzie Matt Charles take the reins - that way I wont be tempted to take the piss of anyone who does happent to message me. I even let him write me a bio, with a heavy focus on gin and tonics. Theres not an awful lot to report on this except for the fact that 90% of men who messaged me were over the age of 35. To be fair, there were a large amount of 20-somethings online. However, all of them seemed to have the romantic flair of a horny teenager.110 per cent true story. Whatever happened to true love and all that crap? Now all people want is a quick bang in the park. Just for the record, Im not down for that. A few of my favourite quotes from their bios included Why cant I find someone that wont hurt me, slicker than your average ;) and are you a Luna Lovegood or Hermione Granger? I deactivated my account after two days. I didnt. Its way too much fun, and quite a bit of an ego boost, to have randomers propositioning you at 4am in the morning. Dont judge me. out in the hope of finding a man face-to-face. And any place where you can get hold of some gin at the same time, is clearly the best shout of them all. So, on a Friday night I donned my glad rags and after getting myself suitably liquored up I decided to approach a cute guy at the bar. To my surprise it was going quite well. At this point Id like to point out that I went to a gay bar. Which probably isnt the best place for a woman to meet man. Depressingly, it doesnt seem like any women wanted to meet me either. Time for another gin. However, bar man number one was funny, seemed quite intelligent and he didnt just want to talk about himself. The conversation was flowing and I felt relaxed enough to start gearing myself up to ask for his number... until I turned around and saw that my friend had just thrown up on herself in the corner. If there was one plus side to my night, it would certainly be the absence of vomit from any of the people in my party. Woohoo! In my rush to get her out before we got ourselves banned, I abandoned cute bar guy after promising that I would find and add him on Facebook. It wasnt until I was crouching in the rain, waiting for a taxi, sheltering my friend who was throwing up the chips I had just bought her, that I realised that I couldnt find cute bar guys profile. And so we end our tale of man searching, just as lonely and just as likely to end up alone with cats as before. Typical.

At the risk of ruining my party trick round of never have I ever, I decide to brave the gym for the first time ever. (Rather you than me) Surely the people in a gym cant be weird and sex obcessed? Going straight past the indoor pool into the artic lands of the outdoor pool because Im well ard, my quest begins. The lifeguard might be cute but even he seems to have more sense than I do, and is more interested in staying wrapped up in his blanket than anything else. Which is fair enough I suppose. Begrudingly I attempt to use some actual gym equipment, only to find that I cant seem to work a damn thing. The gym attendant is keen to help me but I think its more out of pity than anything else. I think this one requires a bit more practice.

I love the Medway campus because its so funky and full of exciting possibilities. One can hop on a boat just outside the classroom, or start jammin in a helicopter. What would you like to see improved about the campus? House hunting
Whether youre sticking with Liberty Quays or venturing out into the housing market, its not an easy decision. Cecily Snowball explores all of the options available to you, including the small print.
You have finally made it to university and you have settled in nicely (or not so nicely) into your student accommodation. But January rolls around and suddenly youre faced with an obscene amount of difficult decisions. Where do I live? Who do I ask? Well, help is on the way. Liberty Quays Liberty Quays currently have a deal where if re-book and spend the 2nd year with them, youll get back 200. Rebook for the third year, get 300 and rebook for the fourth year... You get the picture. You can also snag a 200 shopping voucher when you book in a group of four or more and get one week rent free for every friend you sucessfully refer. Its brand new, allows you to live with whoever you want and its super close to uni and you get the holy grail of student living; an en-suite. Music Technology Student Lewis Murray, 19, said while Liberty Quays Phase 2, which was only completed last year, is a nice place to live in, the price is the main drawback. It's nice and secure, but I'd quite like a cheaper option and not in halls for a third year running personally. It was kind of my first option I guess, I chose it mainly because I knew it was a safe and pretty straight forward procedure and I already knew what it was like, and felt happy doing it again. Id definitely recommend it to first years, then it just depends what you're looking for". On a 39 week contract, youll be looking at a fee of 134 a week, which drops to 125.50 if you sign up for 42 weeks or 110 for 51. Private Landlords If youre looking to get away from Liberty Quays, private housing in Gillingham is your best bet. Theres a huge range of houses out there depending on what your priorities are but prices start from 75 a week. There will be an on campus housing fayre, with dates and times to be announced, in the coming weeks, where you will be able to pick up details and advice on reputable landlords in the area.

The Medwire has also partnered with a number of estate agents, to provide free help and advice on our website. JG Student Lets, Student Places, Martin & Co and Your Move are all good starting points, however, you should still check out the property and shop around before making a definite choice. GK Unions also has a good spot for advice for their website. Whether its queries about council tax, deposits and whether to live on or off campus, its the place to go. If youre looking to get out of Gillingham and search for closer links to Chatham and Rochester, you may have your work cut out. The University may turn you more towards Gillingham as its closer and sometimes cheaper, but if youre persistent, youll be able to find a place in Chatham or Rochester. The best place for that may have to be what could be considered the traditional way. Online sites such as Zoopla or Your Move have places designed for students or can point you towards a landlord that also has a student place for rent. Its all about shopping around and finding the right price, the right location and the right landlord. Private Halls A relatively new development here, private halls offer a cheaper option than Liberty Quays, but still with a communal environment.

One of the best options weve seen is the new Lustrous House by JG Student Lets on Green Street, Gillingham. Each room comes with an en-suite, double bed and come with free rent throughout July and August. You can also look forward to a shared flat screen TV, under floor heating and free wifi, along with all of your other bills included. Currently the charges are set at 330 a month and they will cater for groups of up to eight people. Ones to Watch...
As winter turns into spring, Milli Midwood takes a look at this seasons hottest trends from burning orange to sophisticated whites.
The myriad of shows exhibited in the fashion capitals in September have concluded what well be wearing this season. Whether theyre resurrected from their 80s existence, sticking around from winter or just a new trend altogether, heres what you should be wearing in 2014. The influence of street style is growing and this year fashion is more about individual style. This season sees crop tops, sheer details, fringe, florals and exaggerated silhouettes making strong statements. Cropped Up Spring and summer will be a gloriously wonderful time for girls with great abs so stick to that gym regime because this season the midriffs are out. An investment in some high-waisted garments is crucial this season. Or for those with a sultry stomach to sport, low waisted! Flower Power Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking. Miranda Priestleys famed catty quote from The Devil Wears Prada pretty much sums it up. Florals are definitely not novel to spring but theyre a trend that designers try to reinvent it every year. This season sees a wave of romanticism with clothes adorned with roses and poppies; florals come in soft pastel colours and vibrant hues. Think English countryside and The Secret Garden for this one. Art Attack Prada and Chanel took this trend by storm at fashion week and now its cropping up in our favourites like Topshop and Zara. Think huge exaggerated folds, curved lines, serious silhouettes and graphic prints. This is a trend for the maximalists; protruding sequins and 3D adornments worn head-to-toe for a sophisticated un-subtle approach. White Blouse A seemingly simple trend, this borrowed-from-your-boyfriend look is a classic thats been reinvented this season. This cotton, button-down now features embellished necklines, asymmetrical detailing and a scope of fabrics. The best part of this piece is that it is so wearable and it can be easily dressed up or down. A crisp white shirt is a trend for the spring that boasts a fashionable, affordable and practical status engineered to perfection! On the Fringe Fringe is no longer just for the festival-goers. This trend has been reinvented in a high-fashion way. A trickle-down Gatsby effect, this detailing will pop up everywhere this season. Oh So Orange The intense colours of spring are back starting with orange. There is always a colour that rules the season and this spring and summer sees the return of this vivid hue. Looks like orange is the new black and coral and peach and amber and apricot and pumpkin and mahogany Of course, just because something walks on a runway doesnt mean it will influence anybodys wardrobe, but when you see certain styling moves or details repeating in all four fashion capitals, its a safe bet that youll feel their impact.

The second annual Varsity between Medway and Greenwich will take place in April, it has been confirmed. This years Varisty will take place in Medway for the first time, with both teams vying for bragging rights. Last year, Medway students travelled to Greenwichs Avery Hill Campus to take part in the first Varsity between the two universities. Students took part in Mens Football, Rugby Basketball and Womens Netball matches which saw the teams draw 2-2 overall. The teams will meet again on April 2, with more details expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks. began 18 years ago as a fundraising event for the community. This years Varsity is all about changing the direction Varsity is going in, according to the sabbs.

Netball, Volleyball and that all important Varsity news... you name it, Sports Editor Victoria Polley and her team have got it covered.

Sargent stars for netballers

By Cian Hodge
Medways Netball 1st team are sitting pretty at the top of the South Eastern 5B league with the help of their captain and star player, Brogan Sargent. The goal defence specialist has been in outstanding form, picking up three player of the match awards after five wins in six matches. The Medway women are three points ahead of rivals Canterbury Christ Church University who have a game in hand, with the first meeting between them taking place on January 29. Brogan, who studies Sports Science at Kent, is under no illusion that a strong team performance will be needed to keep CCCU out of the running for the title. She said: We are sitting at the top of the table for the moment, only losing one game by one goal. We have the hardest match of the season to come. Our next game back is critical that we win. The girls have worked very hard so far this year but we still have work to do and there are improvements to be made. Brogan entered the sport fairly late at the age of 13 but has been playing in Netball Easts Regional Clubs League ever since. Looking at me Im not what you would expect from a GD as Im not as sturdy or as tall as a lot of them but I make up for that in my speed and ability to jump and read the ball. But I become my own worse enemy for important matches as I make myself nervous especially when Im playing county! Nerves have certainly not affected her this season in bringing vital performances for the university team. Netball President, Laura Hawkins, said: She has taken on many a role that is not in her job description as 1st team captain but has pretty much single handedly brought the club from negative previous year to the top of the table. But the highlight of the year for Brogan so far has come in the cup competition, narrowly being beaten by a tough London School of Economics side 36-22. Brogan added: We did lose but not by a lot, so it gave us a big boost knowing that weve had such a closely run match with a team who are three leagues above us, meaning that we have a good chance of winning this league.

Get ready teams... Varsity is back!

This hasnt really been done before
Chris Bull, VP for sports at the University of Kent said: Both the University of Kent and Canterbury Christchurch University have a watchful eye on Varsity, and have said that it wont go ahead in future if behaviour carries on. A new schedule has also been drafted up, which sees the action split across both campuses, enabling both universities to host Varsity. Charlotte Moore, the sports sabbatical officer for CCCU said Were having showcase sports on every night, which hasnt really been done before. Organisers are hoping that by having the major sports such as netball, hockey, football and rugby in the evening will encourage students to attend in their masses. Varsity is set to take place across Canterbury from the February 22 26th. For more information keep your eye on the Medwire website.

It wont go ahead in future if behaviour carries on.

Meanwhile, the University of Kent is gearing up for its Varsity with noisy neighbour Canterbury Christchurch as the countdown reached one month to go. This year both the universities and the sabbatical officers are focusing on taking Varsity back to its roots, which

Medway hosts new Futsal day

By Victoria Polley
The Universities at Medway will host its first ever Futsal tournament in March, with over five other universities expected to attend. The event, which will take place on Sunday, March 23, will see the universities battle it out in a series of futsal matches. It will also feature a coaching clinic with Ben Tadmor, Head Coach at First Class Soccer, who also coaches at various England development squads. The event is being organised by Nigel Mpofu, Vinesh Kurup and Kwasi Adomakoh as part of their Sports Management degree. The team hope that the event will increase the profile of fustal, as well as paving the way for similar sports events at the Medway Campus. Mpofu said: Its something we hope can further strengthen our relationship with other student unions which will benefit Medway in general, but our main aim is to play our part in the development and awareness of futsal which is something we are passionate about. Hopefully by hosting this we can go some way to aiding that within the student and wider community in and around the universities. For more information on the event and to get involved make sure to keep an eye on www.themedwire.co.uk/ categories/sport.

Newbies neednt worry if youve never played before as the club was formed so that members could train more than at the old one. Committee member Amy Roberts said: This club is ideal for beginners. Training is adapted to all abilities, with great coaches to help you progress your skills whatever level you are at. Anyone can join. We just want people to come along and give it a go! If you stick it out till the weather warms up you may even find yourself playing a spot of beach volleyball. However a few friendly matches

against other universities are top of the agenda at the moment. Described by Amy as a fun, laid back club you will be spoilt for choice with tips and tricks to playing the game under coaches; Dr Monm Jemni, a lecturer at Greenwich and former student and associate member, Bruce Hertogs. If you fancy something new to start your term with then look no further than Team Medway Volleyball Club.

Transport for Team Medway?

Members of the Medway Sports teams are being encouraged to give their feedback on travelling to games on match days. At the moment, students usually have to make their own way to both home and away matches. Kieran Watkins, Vice President of Medway Student Committee said: Sports Clubs at Medway are really limited in terms of transport. The majority of clubs train and attend matches outside the campus, which means they have to rely on having their own transport, or walk twenty minutes to the nearest sports hall. The universities should be doing all they can to improve transport provision for clubs, and the Medway Student Committee are really keen to hear from teams and campaign on their behalf. Students should send their feedback to Kieran directly by emailing kdjw2@ kent.ac.uk or tweeting him at www. twitter.com/kieranwatkins.
